Gingrich to Obama: ‘Respect our religion,’ not ‘every other religion’

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich says he’s had it with President Barack Obama “respecting every other religion on the planet,” and thinks it’s time for him to “respect our religion” instead.

At a campaign event in Florida on Monday, Gingrich seized on letters read at Catholic Churches across the U.S. that condemned the Obama administration for making birth control more available to women.

“Callista and I were at mass last night, and I believe at every Catholic Church, they are reading a letter about the Obama administration’s attack on Christianity,” Gingrich explained. “This is a fundamental assault on the freedom of religion. … If you help me win the nomination and then you help me win the election, on the very first day I’m inaugurated, I will sign an executive order repealing every Obama attack on religion across the entire government.”

“I think we need to have a government that respects our religions,” he added. “I’m a little bit tired of being lectured about respecting every other religion on the planet. I’d like him to respect our religion.”

While he was at it, Gingrich also charged that the current Republican frontrunner, Mitt Romney, had waged his own war on religion.

“Gov. Romney imposed on the Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts, a position against their conscious,” he said, possibly referring to the misleading claim that Romney supported government-subsidized abortions. He could have also been referencing a decision the former Massachusetts governor made to provide the Plan B birth control pill under Medicaid.

“Gov. Romney cut off Kosher meals for Jewish senior citizens who were on Medicaid to save $5 a day,” Gingrich continued.

The New York Post reported last week that that Romney had used his veto in 2003 to reject $600,000 in funds that would have allowed poor Jewish nursing homes to get Kosher meals.

    • Pretty funny for a guy who's been divorced twice and cheated repeatedly on two wives to be spouting off about his Catholic religion being disrespected.

    • Yeah, yeah. We MUST respect the Catholic Church, the same folks who brought us the Inquisition---they had NO problem burning, torturing and spreading terror. Seems tome, in a world groaning beneath the weight of 8 billion people (many of whom are starving), it would behoove the CC to lift their ban on birth control. Of course....that would mean fewer Catholics....which is, of course, the whole point of their anti-birth control stand. More Catholics = More Power for the Pope.

    • Last night on tosh.0 I saw the most disgusting cyst or whatever it was being popped on someone's back. The impossible amount of white crap that came out of that thing was alarming and disturbing. Newt however is still far more disgusting than that! I will never make peace with the fact that there is a sufficient quantity of stupid out there that gives attention to such a fat sack of excrement. We should never have even heard of this turd... except maybe the people in his neighbourhood who would only know him him as "that crazy asshole".

    • Does that mean that the Catholic church loses its tax exempt status? I thought the 1 point that crosses the line is a religious organization making specific reference to specific politicians during ceremonies.

that is why religion should be left out of politics and governed
I do not believe salvation is given to one by saying I am saved
one cannot buy or pray you into salvation after you are dead
and I do not believe a man can execute a woman for giving birth of a girl
or failing to have a child
and all women have the right to choose
      just as a man does

    • Newt Gingrich, do you recognise that the Vatican held talks about the looming threat of the world wide decline in water reserves (Peak Water) and growing problem of starvation? Newt Gingrich, do you recognise the concept of free choice? Do you also recognise you are well out of step with the rest of the world and probably not a good choice to help lead the American people towards a safe and prosperous future. The American people deserve a President who is willing to help unite them, close the gap between rich and poor and not return them to the mistakes of the past.

    • Newt still hasn't learned that the US is not a Christian nation but a nation made up of many races and religions. I hate the way the so-called "family values" party uses religion as a wedge issue. The sad part is there are people that fall for it.

      Oh, but havent you heard?
"The Catholic Church is the ONLY "True" religion". Yep....all those millions of Buddhists, Hindus, Jews,Native Americans, Aboriginal Australians, and so on....are in for a BIG surprise when they die. There's a big neon sign on Heaven's gate that says, "Sorry---CATHOLICS ONLY PAST THIS POINT"

    • The president's job, along with jobs of every other government employee, isn't to respect all religions but rather to respect the liberty of every individual to practice whatever religion they choose PROVIDED that individual respects the liberty of others to do the same. If they do not, they're freedom of religion is severely curtailed until they do respect others.

It isn't government's place to favor this or that religion. That's the line the framers of the U.S. Constitution drew in the first amendment. It IS government's place to ensure you are free to worship as you choose.

Newt Gingrich apparently doesn't sign off on your liberty to worship as you choose. He wants HIS religion favored over all others.

Newt Gingrich is no friend to the Constitution, no friend of individual liberty and un-American ...

... unless to you "American" means "our way or the highway".

    • I have had enough of this shit. The President respects all religions wich is more than I can say for the Christian right wing of the Republican party. Here is how America works assholes:

      1) If you don't want to have an abortion no one is going to make you have
      one.

      2) I you don't believe in birth control you will not be made to use it.

      3) If you do not want to respect other peoples sexuality, religion,or race
then you have the right to hate.

However; you do NOT have the right to control other peoples bodies, beliefs, or minds. Why does the country have to be your way? We all will stand before whatever higher power we believe in and answer for our lifes deeds. It is my personal beliefe that those of us who claim to be so sanctimonious are going to come up short on our day of judgement because they lost site of their real purpose.
If you value life so much then take care of the children who have already been born. Children and adults in this country and abroad who need food, clean water, medical attention, shelter, and schooling. If you care about faith so much then learn the true histories of the worlds religions. Also get it through you heads that the followers of Islam BELIVE IN GOD. The same god that you believe in. And that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all people of the book (That being the Old Testiment.)
And if you whant to life a life that is truly Christ like then learn to accept all people (i.e. The parable of The Good Sumarian) Gay people did not choose to be gay any more than Mexican people chose to be Mexican. They were BORN that way.
So please, I and many of my fellow Americans have had enough of this crap. It is time to come together to get our country healthy and strong.

    • Its either respect all religions or no religions....sorry one cannot have favored status any longer. Besides, most of those who fiercely defend their religious liberty are like ostriches with two heads, one in the sand and the other up their ass.

      The Sandy-Arsed Ostrich...

Habitat: Members of this species live in heavy concentrations in and around the Washington, D.C. area and their migration patterns closely resemble the travels of political candidates.

Other Notes: The Sandy-Arsed Ostrich has been observed to thrive particularly well in captivity when fed a steady diet of the feces of male cattle.

    • These Conservatives seem to continually ignore the fact that The United States as a secular nation was ratified into law in 1796. The Barlow translation (including article 11) was the text presented by President John Adams and ratified unanimously, unanimously by the Senate following strict Constitutional procedures. These men new full well the importance of wording. The United States, is not and never has been a Christian Nation. If it was a Christian nation, the constitutional right of freedom of religion would not be needed. It would only be needed if it was a secular nation that was willing to allow it's citizens to practice whatever religion they chose to. The first amendment addresses a number of rights given to the public by a secular nation. It was founded as the United States of America. An amendment ensuring the freedom of Americanism would be redundant. Just as an amendment ensuring the freedom of religion in a Christian founded United States of America would be.

Exactly what kind of historian is Newt anyway? He does not even seem to be aware of the establishment clause of the first amendment. He would have us believe the United States was established as a religious nation, and then the first thing they did was create a clause prohibiting the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion! He is a bald faced liar.

    • So much for freedom of religion under a Gingrich Presidency. Yet another attack on the constitution from the right. What Obama attacks on Christianity is he talking about? Which of Obama's laws attacking Christianity will he repeal? How is respecting other religions, an attack on freedom of religion? I notice he had to point out when he wasn't making something up. He "respects people power and not money power"? Then why didn't he say he would ignore Citizens United and have the offending Justices arrested?
