A five-story building in New York City was raided by police this week, revealing that the entire structure was being used as a multi-tiered marijuana farm.
Police said that four of the floors appeared to be designated to individual stages of the plants’ growth, with the most mature on the top floor.
The building also had expensive filtration and watering systems to keep plants healthy and nosy neighbors about their own business, according to NBC New York.
Officers recovered almost 600 marijuana plants, along with 75 pounds of buds that had been prepared for sale. In total, some 1,550 pounds of illegal plants were pulled out of the building.
Three men, ages 23-25, were arrested in the raid. It is not clear if they were solely responsible.

Very inventive and a great argument for the fact that cities CAN grow what they need without acres and acres of farm land. These guys are green pioneers ... in more ways than one.
Sure, growing marijuana is good, but perhaps there are crops they can grow with as much innovation and with comparable value that won't put them in jail. Change your crop or help change the laws to something quite a bit more mature and civilized.
Sad that their lives are now more complicated because many in our society and our government can't behave as civilized adults.

With farmland rapidly disapearing one way to produce food for an overpopulated earth is to build highrise "farms". Instead of acres of land spread outside dependant on the seasons and the weather, the acreage is vertical indoors. With climate controled on each floor to match optimum growing conditions for the crop grown on that floor, multiple varities of crops from all climate zones can be grown year around in one location. Imagine world trade center sized buildings devoted to growing food. One building could feed a small town. What these people did is what needs to be done on a larger scale for food production as well as what they were growing, cancer cures that don't kill.

Bummer. Young, gutsy, enterprizing, resourceful entrepreneurs struck down by absurd legalities. I bet their "Penthouse" stuff was killer.
I've always thought reefer should be legal to grow but not legal to sell. Grow your own. Keep it personal. Keep it local. If it can't be sold you keep the FDA, sin taxes, and big money out of it. - 1 year ago

LOL. I don't think there's any place that humans can live but weed can't be grown. If it ever does go legal and the super green-thumbs come out of the closet (so to speak), we'll probably be amazed at the resourcefulness. :)

Waste of electricity? Unlike all of those pretty blinky blinky lights on Broadway and all around the city?
Ludicrous. At least the power was used to make the concrete jungle a bit more green.

Many citizen's could be utilizing closed buildings to cultivate cannabis, indoors. 'IF' they would have an honest conversation about cannabis and hemp, people 'could' be utilizing spaces now being wasted.
It's time to unspin the rhetoric spun by politician's and corporation's about cannabis and hemp. This just goes to show you what inginuity could accomplish, if applied.
Educate, innovate and build in America, utilizing cannabis and hemp.
