Christo still hanging in there...pardon the pun.

Hearings being held in front of the Fremont County Commisioners, in Canon City, CO were well attended by both sides. Supporters out numbered dissenters but everyone wanted to be heard. The latest project called Over the River has been in the works for 20 years and has gotten a small but aggressive resistance the entire time. The last hurdle is approval by the county commissioners.

"This is a $100 million economic gift from Christo over the next two years," said Doug Shane, executive director of the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce. "Advertising value equivalency of this project simply cannot be estimated at this time but can be estimated by taking all of the print, TV chatter, radio chatter, Internet interest and putting a multiplier of three to 10 times what it would cost to purchase that kind of air time."

Mayor Tony Greer and five of Cañon City's six seated council members also voiced their support.

    • If after 20 years you still haven't gotten approval, that should say something to you. Let us hope that our county commisioners have some brains and vote this down!!! Let's just say no to Cristo.

    • This area is the most contentious place. These people would argue with God over the color of the sky. the hatred and nastiness for a two week art work has been appalling. we should be doing all we can to welcome him and the guests who will come to see this marvelous work in one of the best kept secrets of the region. The Grand Canyon of the Arkansas has a rich history and beauty. This town refuses to grow up. Our new independant mayor is doing his best to change the culture of good old boy bull headed ness.
