Breaking News: Komen Apologizes; Pledges To Continue Planned Parenthood Grants

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives.
The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.
Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.
Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.
It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics - anyone's politics.

Planned Parenthood does a lot more than just abortions. Services provided at locations include contraceptives (birth control); emergency contraception; screening for breast, cervical and testicular cancers; pregnancy testing and pregnancy options counseling; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases; comprehensive sexuality education, menopause treatments; vasectomies, tubal ligations, and, of course, abortion.
So how many abortions do they actually perform? As demonized as this organization is, you would think it ranks in the millions. Actually, here's a numbers breakdown from 2009:
4,009,549 contraceptive services (35% of total)
3,955,926 sexually transmitted disease services (35% of total)
1,830,811 cancer related services (16% of total)
1,178,369 pregnancy/prenatal/midlife services (10% of total)
332,278 abortion services (3% of total)
76,977 other services (1% of total)
In all, 11,383,900 services
They also annually conduct 1 million screenings for cervical cancer and 830,000 breast exams. - 4 months ago

Just take a look at the Board of Directors for the Komen Foundation. Brinker maker over $460K and her son is also a board member. Brinker was married to Norman Brinker, founder of Brinker International which made Chili's a national brand, and daughter of Marvin Goodman who owned the largest shopping center in Peoria, that his grandson now runs. This is just another non-profit that profits the people at the top. So they are both independently wealthy, why take a salary? And do you think that these two would be anything other than RIPublicans? I do not know their political affiliation, but it would seem that they made a really political decision about PP and would never consider changing that if they did not get lambasted on social media and threatened with the loss of millions of dollars in support and countless bad posts even on their own message boards. I have so little faith in "non-profits", they seem to be just less bad than corporations. Administrative costs are out of control. If the non-profit has more than 20% admin costs, something is wrong.

Komen has nothing to apologize for.
The "war" the wing nut left waged on Komen says more negative things about the them than Komen. Komen cuts off funding for reasons that don't have anything to do with abortion yet in the liberal world, anything that infringes with killing children brings out the long knives. Breast cancer is a terrible disease for a woman to get. Komen should be put on a pedestal for the work it does yet it seems that only abortion rights should be supported.
Planned Parenthood and its supporters have made it plain that this is agenda driven, they really care nothing for women but are only about killing children. I have always said that the abortion issue should be between the mother, father and the doctor. I still think that is the case but I cannot support the organization of PP any longer. I will contact my elected reps to agitate for the cutting of funding to Planned Parenthood. I am completely disgusted with the lefts reaction and behavior toward Komen. It is the lowest form of behavior I have seen yet coming from them and that says a LOT. Taxpayer money should not go to that organization, not because of abortions but because of the scorched earth knee jerk reaction toward Komen which, and I reiterate, shows that the organization cares nothing for women medical issues. This dovetails very neatly with what I have observed after posting here for a while in that there is nothing worse than going against one of the lefts sacred cows, particularly a shibboleth such as abortion. - 4 months ago

Heh - I actually would work for them, but not at the director level. I'd go in at the senior counselor level (if as a consultant) or as a VP, but not lower. They need somebody at a senior level who can drive policy and act as a change agent. Of course, the current board would NEVER consider me, as my site makes brutally clear that I'm a progressive business advocate.

Dam has Broken, It's Too Late for KOMENby LOrion
So, it seems SGK is scrambling to reverse itself. But they can't it's too late.
"Susan G. Komen For The Cure has just reversed its decision to drop Planned Parenthood funding, after a week of national outrage that took the Texas-based cancer non-profit by surprise." KOMEN reverses and apologizes
And as noted in this KOS piece from yesterday, KOMEN supporters jump ship, even before this decision "people have been uncomfortable with SGK's marketing, SUPPRESSION OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (my cap), and pushing small groups around over copyright and trademark. This Planned Parenthood thing has just finally pushed them over the edge."
As a physician, I am very concerned. They made a medically unethical decision without hesitating. Just how many others have they made over the years? If they allowed one big funder to tell them to do this, what pressure have they bowed too previously from Big for-profit Health? You know the Right Wing/Big Health mantra is 'die quick, die cheap'...and that most especially goes for women.
I am about to propose to those who ask, that any woman getting treated for breast cancer discuss with her doctor if he uses any KOMEN funded research, asks why...and then asks to be treated by another standard!Actually, I guess I have just done that, for any woman or family member who reads this. I am serious, this was a very medically unethical decision that they didn't even notice it as such.

It was just a logical decision by the Komen Foundation because they were about to get their brand culturally raped by the left wing hate machine. Planned Parenthood doesn't do mammograms. But they blackmail money out of the Komen Foundation by claiming they are a "women's health organization". The banshees of the left went into full thundercunt mode on cue from their puppetmasters at the usual left wing sites.
If the Komen Foundation didn't relent and cough up the money originally donated for preventing breast cancer to be used by Planned Parenthood for abortions then the left would pull out all the stops and the Komen Foundation would be vilified in the news and online. There would be snarky, shitty comments about the Komen Foundation on every talk show, sitcom and Law and Order spinoff episode and The View and The Bill "Penis Nose" Mahar Show and Comedy Central, etc. Current corporate sponsors concerned about their brand integrity would dump Komen. This includes the NFL, the NBA, MLB, NCAA, Starbucks, etc.
This was a classic left wing shake down. You pay money to someone who'll use it for something completely different than what you donated it for, or they'll send their legions of conformist shitbags out there to trash your organization all over hell and gone.
Fuck you Planned Parenthood. You're just a baby killing factory; nothing more.

We're kinda in a gray area here, wanderer, and some folks like the white pixels, some like the black. Just a couple of points:
1. This point about future funding was picked up by crooksandliars as it came available this afternoon. As I understand it, grant funding is always for a fixed period. "Understandings" and "expectations" are, of course, just that.
2. In my view the most important words in all this are these from Brinker: "We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair." That puts the onus back on the GOP to actually DO something.
Not defending anyone here. I'm just as annoyed with this whole business as many others. Just sayin'...... - 4 months ago

While I appreciate the apology and Komen's ability to step back from a very bad decision, Planned Parenthood has a proven track record for making a difference in the lives of women, and Komen will have to prove itself in my book. What they did was so obviously politically motivated that it will be a long, long time before I ever again donate to Komen, or support them in any way. My support will be with Planned Parenthood, an organization that does not discriminate based upon political or religious persuasion.

I will still not support them ever again. They only apologized because they saw a major impact on their gravy train. The President of National Organization for Women said that because of this very political decision by the SKC that she predicted that this organization would not be around in three years. I say let's make it happen. What have they really done to find a cure for breast cancer? Just making people aware of breast cancer is not enough.

Clff Stearns is the old white guy who is conducting the HUAC McCarthy era style "investigation" of Planned Parenthood. The forced reversal of the decision by Komen's board to defund Planned Parenthood is a good sign that the reign of the Tea Party tyrants will come to an end in 2012.
Clifford Bundy "Cliff" Stearns, Sr. (born April 16, 1941) is the U.S. Representative for Florida's 6th congressional district, serving since 1989. He is a member of the Republican Party.
As Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Cliff Stearns conducted the first-ever oversight on taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider. National Public Radio reported, "Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest single provider of abortions, yet it gets millions of dollars in federal funding with which to provide other services." .[15]

I wouldn't rest easy just because they reversed their decision. The wacko fringe on the right really, really, really, really wants to impose its way on the rest of us and they won't be deterred by public opinion. They will likely try to find another way to attack PP.

I agree, and I think this was an entirely pre-meditated and covertly coordinated attack. I suspect the tea party worked with the Congressional representative who initiated the investigation of Planned Parenthood, and that the investigation was initiated for the sole purpose of allowing Komen to use that investigation as an excuse to de-fund Planned Parenthood. The fact that Komen Vice President Karen Handel ran for governor of Georgia as a Republican — and pledged to take away grants from Planned Parenthood, more than proves this was both a premeditated and secretly coordinated attack on women. The tea party faction of the GOP is conniving, coercive and without conscience.

When I was much younger and in my childbearing years I got my birth control, yearly exams, etc from the Planned Parenthood office in the town I lived in. I think it is downright stupid to treat them the way the Komen foundation did, after all, their name is PLANNED parenthood -- that means doing it the right way and not getting pregnant or having the need for an abortion. I am extremely thankful this nation has them as they help those of us who wouldn't be able to afford birth control if they weren't providing this service. It is unconscionable that anyone would center on the idea that all they do is provide abortions -- it shows how RETARDED those idiots who say that really are!

I agree with you, thanks for sharing your story...There are so many people that Planned Parenthood has helped, it's great to have an organization like Planned Parenthood that really help people. We cannot read the newspaper or watch television with becoming aware of life- threatening illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, and heart disease....Here's the facts Planned Parenthood Cancer Screening and Preventing 16%, Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections, (STDs/STIs) Testing and Treatment 35%...Other Women's Health Services 10%, Contraception 35% and Abortion Services 3% Other Services 1% '2009 Figures Total Services=11.4 Million. We have become concerned about the debilitating effects such illnesses have on the individual and the community. Unfortunately, victims afflicted with life-threatening illnesses are often branded as outcasts, Romney called them poor people. Komen foundation wants people to suffer the remainder of their lives in exile. 3 million in donations replaced Komen. I wonder how much money is being skimmed off for these fat Komen salaries.
