Profiles in Heritage: First African-American Female Officers

letsliveinpeace
DoDLive proudly presents "Profiles in Heritage," a series honoring the diverse warriors, leaders, and others that have served in the United States Armed Forces over the years. February is African-American History month, and this episode tells the story of Lt. j.g. Harriet Ida Pickens and Ensign Frances Wills, the first African-American, female officers. Pickens and Wills' commissions were a significant historical milestone for the military as they came some 20 years before the Civil Rights Act.
