    • Excellent article. John Pilger is one of the best. This proves Australia is sadly no better than the US. Obama lied about protecting whistle blowers and yes, the first amendment is under assult and in danger of becoming a thing of the past.

    • It is unprecedented because it subverts the First Amendment of the US constitution that explicitly protects truth-tellers. In 2008 Barack Obama said, "Government whistleblowers are part of a healthy democracy and must be protected from reprisal". Obama has since prosecuted twice as many whistleblowers as all previous US presidents.

      It appears Obama is as much, or more, two-faced as the worst of past American presidents. How sad that we have no real choice in the upcoming election; and sadder still that the 2008 version of Obama was nothing more than a straw man.

      I think personal attacks on Assange are way off base. The relevant questions are:
      1.) Does leaking information the Government wants kept secret do more good than harm or the reverse.
      2.) Do the actions our Government is taking to attack and harass WL and Assange do more harm than good, or the reverse.

      Without taking a position on Assange's case specifically, I think that a certain level of "Whistle Blowing", and even the plausible risk of someone Whistle blowing is a healthy thing. The U.S. Government today is the most powerful institution that has ever existed in the history of the world. The power it wields is enormous, almost beyond comprehension. The idea of a small group of people, wielding that kind of power, totally in secret is not a good thing in my view.

      So back to Assange, he likely is a rather "Odd Duck". There may be even more unflattering terms that fit him. Bradley Manning seems like he was a troubled individual as well. But then, what normal person would take the risk of calling the full wrath of the U.S. Government down upon their heads in the interest of an abstraction like, the citizens of the nation and the world have a right to the truth about what our government is up to.

      I guess I'm saying, "It's a dirty job, but perhaps SOMEONE has to do it." For myself, I'm not that concerned weather that person is a saint or a jerk.

    • Working on the Mall as an Obama volunteer, in the bitter cold of January 20, 2009, feeling not the cold, but the relief at having survived George W. Bush, and the anticipation of an Obama Presidency, I could never have imagined that we would end up here; and yet here we are.

      It seems that whenever I'm inclined to take some new hope in Obama, I'm confronted with a story like this; which reminds me that Obama's abuse of the constitution is scarcely less than Bush's. Does he lack the will to stand up for our liberties, or the competence, or the moral clarity. Has he really gone over to the "Dark Side"? Or is the system so corrupt that it's beyond any man's ability to alter our inexorable fall into totalitarianism?

      And, in the end, does it matter? We are so F#CKED !!!

      Gordon...you have expressed the sentiments of many of us here and better than most I'm sure. The disappointment has been at times visceral and the plummet from the original high of the 2008 election to where we are at this moment has been mind-jarring to say the least...I am convinced he was never the thing he claimed to be in his campaign...he has had ample opportunity to prove his mettle and has not...and you are absolutley correct when you say: "We are so F#cked!!!"

      I think he was always over on the "dark side" -- he just hid it while he was trying to win the presidency ... look at the '3 stooges' that were at the top of his cabinet; Geithner, Emanuel and Summers -- those appointments SHOUTED closet reptard, and it has only gotten worse over the last 3 years ...
      The sad thing is we have a choice between him and the total pondscum on the 'official' reptard side, meaning that at this point I guess it's better to vote for the devil we know as opposed to the devils we don't really know yet :-(.

      So, I have no good counter argument to your point, except to say that I didn't specify WHEN he might have gone over to the "Dark Side". It's certainly a plausible explanation that he was Wall Street's "Manchurian Candidate" from the beginning. But my sense is that the total capitulation on Constitutional Liberties came later. Maybe around the time that "the People who are really in charge" give a new president his "Orientation". :-(

      I'm new to this 'politics' game (I never really cared all that much until the shrub got elected and didn't start trying to make a difference until Obama burst on the scene) so I don't really understand your last statement -- honestly, could you clarify? I have lived my life believing that you back up your words with action, and since Obama has never really done that I just figured he lied to get elected. From your statement it seems like there's a third possibility, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

      Assange knew what he was doing, as did Bradley, as did Ellsberg and many other whistleblowers since. Time was, not long ago, these folks would have disappeared quietly. They've given us a view of the workings of power and a chance to change. Don't be distressed, at least not debilitatingly so, be empowered and emboldened.

      I mean maybe they can in some ways, make life harder, and they do, but if more people would reject the assumption of modern "civilization"..... Give up their consumerist endeavors, peacefully protest the shit, live off the land organically in larger numbers... What happen to the so called "Hippie" generation, bunch of flower children sell-outs, the vast majority didn't even try to live up to their own standards long at all, greedy capitalistic consumers....

      Reject the system, clog the courts with non violent activism, see if their FEMA camps can hold us all...

      Thanks, and I agree with some of what your are saying...but there are those who dropped out and stayed out, but the material system is stacked against it for some obvious reasons having much to do with control and greed...so they weren't all "flower children sell-outs." Power to the people!
