Excellent article. John Pilger is one of the best. This proves Australia is sadly no better than the US. Obama lied about protecting whistle blowers and yes, the first amendment is under assult and in danger of becoming a thing of the past.

It is unprecedented because it subverts the First Amendment of the US constitution that explicitly protects truth-tellers. In 2008 Barack Obama said, "Government whistleblowers are part of a healthy democracy and must be protected from reprisal". Obama has since prosecuted twice as many whistleblowers as all previous US presidents.
It appears Obama is as much, or more, two-faced as the worst of past American presidents. How sad that we have no real choice in the upcoming election; and sadder still that the 2008 version of Obama was nothing more than a straw man.

No it doesn't. Assaunge is an egotistical dip-shit and prosecuiting him for anything might take some of the bull-shit out of the equation. And he might not be on the chopping block if he wasn't so bloody arrogant about it. Shit must be exposed when it's found, by whomever finds it. Just not by Julie-Baby.

Wagon Master...your point?? If he is an "egostistical dip-ship" as you suggest, how does that change the importance of what he and his organization have been able to do...this is not elementary school here and red herrings are not usually served...get it?

WagonMaster:
I think personal attacks on Assange are way off base. The relevant questions are:
1.) Does leaking information the Government wants kept secret do more good than harm or the reverse.
2.) Do the actions our Government is taking to attack and harass WL and Assange do more harm than good, or the reverse.Without taking a position on Assange's case specifically, I think that a certain level of "Whistle Blowing", and even the plausible risk of someone Whistle blowing is a healthy thing. The U.S. Government today is the most powerful institution that has ever existed in the history of the world. The power it wields is enormous, almost beyond comprehension. The idea of a small group of people, wielding that kind of power, totally in secret is not a good thing in my view.
So back to Assange, he likely is a rather "Odd Duck". There may be even more unflattering terms that fit him. Bradley Manning seems like he was a troubled individual as well. But then, what normal person would take the risk of calling the full wrath of the U.S. Government down upon their heads in the interest of an abstraction like, the citizens of the nation and the world have a right to the truth about what our government is up to.
I guess I'm saying, "It's a dirty job, but perhaps SOMEONE has to do it." For myself, I'm not that concerned weather that person is a saint or a jerk.

- sort of reminds you WHY you hate the power elite ;
[ WikiLeaks has given Australians a rare glimpse of how their country is run. In 2010, leaked US cables disclosed that key government figures in the Labor Party coup that brought Julia Gillard to power were "protected" sources of the US embassy: what the CIA calls "assets". Kevin Rudd, the prime minister she ousted, had displeased Washington by being disobedient, even suggesting that Australian troops withdraw from Afghanistan.
In the wake of her portentous rise ascent to power, Gillard attacked WikiLeaks as "illegal" and her attorney-general threatened to withdraw Assange's passport. Yet the Australian Federal Police reported that Assange and WikiLeaks had broken no law. ]

Working on the Mall as an Obama volunteer, in the bitter cold of January 20, 2009, feeling not the cold, but the relief at having survived George W. Bush, and the anticipation of an Obama Presidency, I could never have imagined that we would end up here; and yet here we are.
It seems that whenever I'm inclined to take some new hope in Obama, I'm confronted with a story like this; which reminds me that Obama's abuse of the constitution is scarcely less than Bush's. Does he lack the will to stand up for our liberties, or the competence, or the moral clarity. Has he really gone over to the "Dark Side"? Or is the system so corrupt that it's beyond any man's ability to alter our inexorable fall into totalitarianism?
And, in the end, does it matter? We are so F#CKED !!!

Gordon...you have expressed the sentiments of many of us here and better than most I'm sure. The disappointment has been at times visceral and the plummet from the original high of the 2008 election to where we are at this moment has been mind-jarring to say the least...I am convinced he was never the thing he claimed to be in his campaign...he has had ample opportunity to prove his mettle and has not...and you are absolutley correct when you say: "We are so F#cked!!!"

Has he really gone over to the "Dark Side"?
I think he was always over on the "dark side" -- he just hid it while he was trying to win the presidency ... look at the '3 stooges' that were at the top of his cabinet; Geithner, Emanuel and Summers -- those appointments SHOUTED closet reptard, and it has only gotten worse over the last 3 years ...
The sad thing is we have a choice between him and the total pondscum on the 'official' reptard side, meaning that at this point I guess it's better to vote for the devil we know as opposed to the devils we don't really know yet :-(.Pwr 2 the true American 99%! So, I have no good counter argument to your point, except to say that I didn't specify WHEN he might have gone over to the "Dark Side". It's certainly a plausible explanation that he was Wall Street's "Manchurian Candidate" from the beginning. But my sense is that the total capitulation on Constitutional Liberties came later. Maybe around the time that "the People who are really in charge" give a new president his "Orientation". :-(

I'm new to this 'politics' game (I never really cared all that much until the shrub got elected and didn't start trying to make a difference until Obama burst on the scene) so I don't really understand your last statement -- honestly, could you clarify? I have lived my life believing that you back up your words with action, and since Obama has never really done that I just figured he lied to get elected. From your statement it seems like there's a third possibility, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

Not sure which part you are questioning. The Manchurian Candidate was a Cold War era Film (1962). You are likely too young to remember it; but a nice summary can be found on WikiPedia, among other places.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manchurian_CandidateThe reference to"the people really in charge" is slightly tongue in cheek; but then it's only funny because one often has to wonder if it isn't really true. Try this link.

Ok ... so you're saying he meant what he said b4 he got elected, but when the Wall St overlords visited him in the WH they installed a computer chip inside his right ear (b/c people who are left brain dominant are NOT creative, and do NOT care what happens to humanity) as they wanted him to channel his inner reptard (right wing). And the reason he has done so many things that scream 'right wing' is b/c the computer chip in his ear is telling him what Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Blank-not-at-all-fein want him to do so they can continue to rob this country blind! Got it! I need to make a trip to NYC and install computer chips in their left ears so that they will become right brain dominant and realize humanity is worth saving AND sharing the wealth with! If I do this soon enough then Mr. Blank-not-so-fein, will realize the error of his way and do whatever is necessary to convince Obama to run for president again!

Assange knew what he was doing, as did Bradley, as did Ellsberg and many other whistleblowers since. Time was, not long ago, these folks would have disappeared quietly. They've given us a view of the workings of power and a chance to change. Don't be distressed, at least not debilitatingly so, be empowered and emboldened.
