Is Keith Olbermann the Last Hope for Gore's Current TV? - NewsWeek/The Daily Beast

It was early November when tensions between Keith Olbermann and Al Gore escalated into a crisis at Current TV. There had been a short honeymoon after Gore, the channel’s co-owner, had handed the notoriously temperamental anchor a reported $10 million salary and equity stake in February of last year, but the relationship soured quickly. Now, just five months after Olbermann’s show Countdown had resurfaced on Current, it looked as if he might walk away.

    • I'm guessing there is a passion deficit and this is Keith Olbermann's way of getting people a little more worked up. If you like Current and think there is some future in what they are doing then it's time to make a bigger commitment to it.

    • I'm a big Olbermann fan but I am growing wary of these tantrums! The man is a talent but he is burning just about every single last bridge. Suck in the ego Keith, be a little less of an asshole and more the voice we all hope you can become!!!

    • I don't know, but I'm tired of the political overkill. That in and of itself may in the end be what kills it. Diversity and balance on a network is essential as well in my opinion of course. I won't go on again about what I would like to see here at Current though. No one with the power to make it happen listens or cares anyway.

I agree, Current is becoming another prog-lite outlet for political distraction - losing relevancy. I suspect it's a Dem cheerleader outfit at heart in management. Jan I like your focus on environmental issues, keep up the good work.

    • I don't know about the TV station. But Current might have an opportunity to revitalize its online format as an alternative to privacy hating google owned you-tube.

When Current started in 2005 the idea was based on user generated and uploaded videos (sort of a novel concept at the time). Yet somehow it ended up losing out to its main competitor, youtube. Current then switched gears.

With SOPA/PIPA, the recent public awareness and concern about privacy and the internet, and with the March 1. Google merger of youtube with all google's other services into the Ultimate personal data miner, Current .com might have an opportunity.

If Current wanted to recapture some market share and return to its roots, it should retool its user uploaded aspects, the groups/ etc. Provide a converter for youtube videos to Current videos, and hype Current . com in the next few months as a privacy friendly alternative to youtube.

    • okay, i'll bite. whomever the person is who is relating the stories back stage as it were doesn't sound credible to me. the story makes current and KO sound unprofessional and immature...."bullspit"......as for only appealing to 18-34? only? who does that these days? not any news media worth its salt.....the low tech approach to production works for Democracy Now and they garnered a green award for it. I want content not flash. a damn chair and a person who can speak the kings english, report facts with intelligent commentary and a dash of humour without making me scream "idiot" or feeling manipulated works for me. credibility goes alot further than flash and acrylic desks.
