The sons of Josh Powell, who were just 7 and 5, suffered what police described as "chop wounds" to their heads and necks before the Graham, Wash., home went up in flames as a helpless social worker looked on Sunday. The cause of death for all three is believed to be smoke inhalation.
"This was definitely a deliberate, planned-out event," Pierce County Sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer said.
Investigators found two five-gallon gas cans in the rubble, supporting the theory that Powell, who had lost custody of the boys to his missing wife's parents, had set an accelerated blaze after locking out the social worker who had brought young Charlie and Braden for a supervised visit.
Steve Richards, assistant chief of Graham Fire and Rescue, said responders arrived about three minutes after getting the call and found flames already through the roof

I saw some of this on the morning news. They were saying that the children were beginning to talk about their Mother and one had drawn a picture of her in the trunk of the car. He left voice mail messages with family members before he killed his children. I don't know the details, but I question why they would interview the children and not somehow protect them if the father was suspect.
Horrible. Cowardly. Sick and selfish to take those children's lives.

Absolutely. Why would they release the children back t5o this monster if in fact the child told any branch of authority that his Mom was locked up dead in the truck of their car.

I really appreciate you posting this. I almost get the feeling that people may look at it and say it's tragic, but it's over. I agree someone dropped the ball on this and there's probably a great deal more too it than we know.
