"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it," Handel said in her letter. "I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen's future and the women we serve."
Handel said in the letter the now-abandoned policy was fully vetted by the Komen organization. Its board did not raise any objections when it was presented with the proposed policy in November, Handel said.
Komen Founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker said she accepted Handel's resignation and wished her well.
"We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission," Brinker said in a statement. "To do this effectively, we must learn from what we've done right, what we've done wrong and achieve our goal for the millions of women who rely on us."

Good riddance to Karen Handel, her pearls and her Republican agenda.
Karen Handel ran for governor of Georgia as a Republican — and pledged to take away grants from Planned Parenthood, but we should believe her when she says "I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it."
Not sure what she is defining as mischaracterization — her own Republican platform provided all the gross characterization necessary to know this was a callous political move that showed neither care nor concern for women's health.
I think it is safe to say, the conservative moral agenda will not cease and desist, but rather, will become even more sneaky and subversive.

Brinker lied on Andrea Mitchell's show when she said that their decision was not political and that Handel had nothing to do with the decision to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Now with the emails coming out of Koman and from Handel herself, we know that Handel was hired specifically to find a way to de-fund PP without it looking political. So no matter what spin Brinker wants to give, she has lost the faith of a lot of women. I know I'll never spend another dime on a "pink ribbon campaign" sponsored by Koman.

I think that the mistake that Handel and the Right made was in thinking that American women and men did not care about Planned Parenthood and it's true mission which is womens health. The Right has to learn that not every issue concerning womens health can be made into a referendum on abortion. Breast cancer does not care what your circumstances or political leanings are. It kills equally.

I don't think it really matters what the characterization was. And it would seem to me it does not matter whether Komen did it for political reasons or not. I think the lesson here is, if you do anything to hurt Planned Parenthood you will do so at your own risk. Maybe organizations will realize what can happen to them if they are even perceived to be jumping on the far right bandwagon, even if they are not. Komen says that's not what they were doing and they are in a world of hurt anyway. The public thinks the right is attacking Planned Parenthood and P.P. gets overwhelming support. The public thinks Komen is supporting the far right, and they are caught in the middle of a public relations nightmare. Seems to me the far right does not speak for that many Americans after all.

I agree, perhaps OWS actually made a few more people realize that their voices matter after all! The support shown for PP in this instance was astronomical! They have always had a solid base of support, but this time that support seemed to really make sure they were heard!

Well, jim, I think the politics do matter for an organization that has always presented itself as totally wholesome and above the fray. It hit a lot of women out of nowhere. They responded from the gut. Now they're going to start thinking.
I think Brinker stopped this as quickly as possible to try to avoid folks digging further into the nuts and bolts of Komen. Charitible non-profits are not as pretty as they pretend to be, and Komen is not one of the better performers. - 4 months ago

Okay. If people had not perceived this to be a political move they would have been just fine with Komen revoking funding for P.P.

Not what I said. Overt, unsavory politics made it much worse. It still would have been a big deal without the politics. But it's arguable that without the politics none of this would have happened at all.

I know what you meant. The point of my first post was about the warning other organizations can take from this. That it does not really matter if Komen did it for political reasons or not (which they obviously did) because the perception of political activism is enough to cause an organization grief. As I stated, there are lessons to be learned here. One, you can't unring the bell. Komen is in a public relations nightmare no matter what the reason for their actions. Two, jumping on the far right bandwagon might not be a good idea for any organization. Three, the far right agenda, especially their attacks on P.P., may not be playing as well with the rest of America as the right may have believed before this backlash. Hopefully it will make Republican lawmakers rethink their attacks on P.P. if they believe it could cause them the same trouble as it did Komen, but I doubt it. I should add that Komen would have probably received protests from the right had they decided to increase P.P. funding. I have my doubts the protests would have been quite so severe though.

We always have choices and the capability to take a stand where we each individually see fit. While I do not agree with Karen's position I applaud her separation from an organization that she can no longer stand behind.

This is probably the biggest thing to help restore my own faith in this organization since the initial incident.
My approval is still not back to 100% though. It'll probably be years before it even gets back up to 80%.

Yep. And a tip 'o the cap to Brinker for responding to the uproar and shoving the whole mess right back at the GOP. As you mentioned elsewhere, there are still issues to be addressed with the charitable foundation business, but that's another day. Today, the correct head rolls. Enjoy.

I am not completely convinced that Brinker was not on board with this. How else did someone like Handel get the job, when she had already made her intention to defund PP very public? Brinker, in my book, is not that far removed, ideologically, from Handel. Screw them both and their pink ribbons.

No argument. I just believe that if someone responds correctly we give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment. Her reversal included the words "right and fair" which suggests to me that she does have empathy but has gone too far in the "ends justify the means" equation. Yes, the pink ribbons and the trademarks bug me too. In my view, charitable non-profits engage in marketing charity for some corporate donors who might want "moral washing". Oderous.

Watched Keith's comments on this from the homepage as I was getting ready to log off, and as usual, he nailed it more than any of us. I am so sick of the GOP agenda, the lies, the manipulations, their callous attitude towards the poor, and all of it tucked neatly under their umbrella of self-righteous, God talk pontification. Fed up, and glad to know I am not alone!
