Again With the Phony Religious Freedom, Mr. Boehner?

Again With The Phony Religious Freedom, Mr. Boehner?

By Rebecca Cassady

I find myself constantly amazed at the boundless idiocy of the Right Wing. I know. I know. I should be way past over it. But America’s favorite orange sherbert extraordinaire, John B … (c’mon, you know you wanna say it) Boehner, has managed to stupefy me once again. I have felt a plethora of emotions since the Republican war on women began; the audacity of these men to tell me, a woman, what I can and cannot do with my own body is galling. Wrapping it up in religious freedom is a just dirty trick. And, really folks, it’s not like we are repopulating after the flood. There is no logical reason why a woman who works at a Christian business shouldn’t have the same access to birth control that every other woman is eligible to receive. It’s not like it’s a new thing anyway, but it’s election time, and as we all know, anything goes. From Mother Jones:

“President Barack Obama’s decision to require most employers to cover birth control and insurers to offer it at no cost has created a firestorm of controversy. But the central mandate—that most employers have to cover preventative care for women—has been law for over a decade. This point has been completely lost in the current controversy, as Republican presidential candidates and social conservatives claim that Obama has launched a war on religious liberty and the Catholic Church.”

There are so many different items in this two minute speech I could wax poetic about all day long. For instance, how religious freedom on the right means freedom to only be a Christian-all others be damned. I could ponder with you the curiosity of the largest religion in the country always claiming to be under attack (Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I’m being repressed!). I could argue with you about the shift to the right this country has experienced over the last thirty years, and how it’s mainly been through deceptive conservative politicians and the duplicitous mainstream media. We could meander on over to the town of HowDoesThisCreateJobs and drink it up at that snazzy dive, YourCountryIsInDireStraightsAndAllIGotIsThisLousyTShirt. But the one thing that really boiled me bottoms and shivered me timbers was this:

“In imposing this requirement the federal government has drifted dangerously beyond it’s constitutional boundaries, encroaching on religious freedom in a manner that affects millions of Americans, and harms some of our nation’s most vital institutions. If the president does not reverse the department’s attack on religious freedom, then the congress, acting on behalf of the American people and the constitution that we’re sworn to uphold and defend, must.”

Here’s the video via TPM:

Upholding and defending the constitution means upholding and defending for all Americans, not just the ones who give you money and vote for you. It is your sworn duty to protect the rights of everyone regardless of gender, race, creed, and sexual orientation. You have the honor of standing up for all women everywhere to ensure their reproductive rights are respected. And I am telling you Mr. Boehner, you big Cheetos of a man, your religious freedom ends where my body begins.

Feel free to pick apart everything I just said here!

    • This loser is looking for any avenue to propr up his flagging position as Speaker of the House in the eyes of the Tea Party and the social conservatives. Cantor is waiting in the wings to pick Boner's bones as soon as he drops in his tracks from spinning in circles for too long. I've never seen any Speaker before him whose sole purpose was to throw as many road blocks as possible in front of constructive legislation while bringing bucket loads of shit to the floor for a vote that his own caucus can't always support. He will go down in history as the most ineffective Speaker ever to hold the position, but will hold the record for most crocodile tears spilled.

The money nozzle that leads straight from Big Oil right up Boehner's ass has made him the 1%er that he is. He will bend over for whatever special interest that takes him on a golf junket basically. They know that and he has the stretch marks to prove it.

Hey Boner....how about NOT encroaching on women's bodies?! Being able to get birth control is a FREEDOM women want. I saw a poll last night that said alot of Catholic women use BC. So shove it with this religious freedom crap!

    • Rebecca Cassady is spot on in her assessment of this bogus wedge issue. I am getting sick and tired of old white congressmen and religious leaders telling me what I can do with my body. It's time for women to stand up and say enough!

I think they are standing up for the first time in a long time. The women in Congress are fighting back vociferously. I hope they keep it up. The old men of Congress and the Church only care about their dogma and not the women of America.

    • Let's see now, they claim it is against gods law to use birth control. REALLY? Please be so kind as to show me where in your holey books where upon it is written "Thou shall not use birth control". Chances are you won't find it, as your texts are full of holes that an nuclear powered aircraft carrier could go through and not scratch the paint. So stop your yammering you ignorant fools
