A good week for gay rights in the US: Ellen, gay marriage, Maureen Walsh [video]
This video of Republican Maureen Walsh is a bit of a tearjerker and sums up a good week, no make that a brilliant week, for gay rights in the US. Walsh was one of only two Republicans in the House of Representative to vote in favour of the bill allowing gay couples to marry in Washington The bill passed 55-43 and will be signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire on Monday. Read more here.
A good week for gay rights
On Tuesday the federal 9th US circuit court of appeals found that California’s “Propostion 8”, its controversial gay marriage ban approved narrowly by referendum in 2008 is unconstitutional.
On Wednesday Washington State won final legislative approval of a measure that will make it the seventh state to recognise same-sex marriage.
Then on Thursday there was the Ellen DeGeneres and JCPenny vs. the angry bigoted 'One Million Moms' row. JCPenny, which is Michelle Obama's clothing line of choice (when she wants to go budget), stuck to their guns and decided to ignore the conservative cyber bullies by standing by keeping the gay talk-show host as their celebrity spokes person. The 'mom's' wanted JCPenny to fire Ellen and said: "By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years."
Well Ellen and JCPenny got the last laughs on this one. Watch this.
