Obama set to make compromise on contraception plan

White House to accommodate religious organisations on its rule for health insurance coverage of contraceptives, reports say

The White House will announce a move to accommodate religious organisations on its rule for health insurance coverage of contraceptives, reports claimed on Friday – but said the proposal is unlikely to satisfy leaders from the Catholic church.

The proposal will "be respectful of religious beliefs," but the White House was not abandoning its central goal for women employees of religious institutions, including schools and hospitals, to be fully covered by health insurances plans, according to ABC's Jake Tapper.

One possibility would be to mimic several state laws that let religious employers opt out of covering birth control in their insurance packages, so long as they refer women to a provider that will offer the benefit at low cost, sources told Reuters.

Catholic leaders have already declared that plan toxic, arguing that referring women to low-cost contraception is as immoral as distributing the drugs and devices first-hand.

"The church must have the freedom to refuse to cooperate in any way in making these 'services' available," Bishop William Lori, who heads a committee on religious liberty, wrote on the US Conference of Catholic Bishops blog. "If we provide the means for another to act against the moral law, we ourselves become morally culpable as well."

Several prominent Catholic leaders have indicated in recent days that they are in no mood to compromise and will not accept anything short of the Obama administration withdrawing the regulation that all health insurance plans provide free contraception – with no co-pays and no deductibles – as part of basic preventive care.

So far, the church's protests have focused mainly on their fear that the requirement abridges their religious freedom. But several Catholic leaders are now raising a second issue – concerns that the promise of free birth control for all will infringe upon parental rights by making it easier for teenagers to get access to contraception on their own initiative.

    • He may compromise now, but wait and see if he gets re-elected, he'll do anything he wants with no cares about what the people want.

    • Morals shmorals bunch of crap. Religious morality of Catholicism with regard to contraception is nonsense. There is nothing in the bible that would support their position.

    • I just saved a ton of money on child support by switching to condoms!!!!

My god.... If people want contraceptives.... Who is it Catholics think any form of birth control is "immoral"?

Idk..... I don't want to pay for your contraceptives, considering there is only about 3-5% of the population that would have anything serious to do with me and vise-versa (so it's an optimistic figure, gotta have hope)....

I just wouldn't want my health insurance fees covering your birth control.....

It ain't getting me laid, and it takes from the inevitable amount of money that has to be spent getting me laid....

    • As of this writing Obumma has made his "compromise" What a joke. This idiot is turning more and more into a dictator every day.
Dear Leader does not have the given authority to force private companies to pay for this just as he does not have the given authority to make organizations opposed to birth control pay for it. The fact that he has removed the payment onus from the employer and told the insurance companies that they must provide it for free changes nothing. This will not be free. Every company I have dealt with that provides health insurance picks up part of the tab for the premium. Ergo they are still paying for it, just not as much. Additionally, even if the company did not pay anything toward their employees premiums the insurance company will spread the cost of this around to the rest of its insured. Should the Unitarians be forced to pay for the Catholics birth control pills? No. There is no "right " to birth control. This is not treatment. This is elective. King Barry is wrong on this just as he is wrong on many other things.

Sorry for your interpretation. He does have the authority. It was given to him by Congress. If you make money in this country then you play by its rules.

More than 90% of the American people have used birth control so this is hardly a decision for the minority. Money for contraception is clearly an investment, and any smart company would see that. Unplanned pregnancies reduce productivity.

Most educated people know you have to compromise if you want to make the world a better place. The compromise was supposed to take a year to work out anyway, but the President saw that the repos wanted to ressurrect this social issue into another year of useless idiocy. Thanks, Mr. President for not being an ideologue willing to sacrifice women's health for political purposes.

It is not about popularity it is about the authority of the president to tell a private entity the scope of their service. You are incorrect. He does not have that authority. He may have assumed it but that is another matter.

Thisis not about "health" or "healthcare". It is about choices. goes to individual responsibility. The purpose of the central government is not to indemnify the people in their choices.

    • "White House to accommodate religious organisations?"

Geez, even J.C. Penney has more balls than the Obama administration....they told the right-wing nut jobs where to step off when they whined and stomped their feet trying to remove Ellen DeGeneres....but not the Obama administration.

Is there anything the Obama administration won't compromise on? How about some balls Mr. President? That would be a nice CHANGE!

I totally agree, Incredulous. This country is becoming a Theocracy more everyday. As I said on another thread....We already are a Idiocracy and a Plutocracy. Might as well go for the Tirfecta.

    • What is sad is that the only one willing to compromise is the President. The Catholic Bishops are starting to sound like the GOP. They all keep saying it is my way or the highway. Nothing will ever get done if you are not willing to compromise. Compromise in not a dirty word -- it is how things get done. You compromise everyday -- be it with your spouse, your children or your employer, etc., otherwise you are living in a autocratic society.

It would have been nice if their incredulity had included outrage over the millions of children that have been victimized over the years. Since when does providing health care to women endanger religious freedom? Bogus hypocrisy. Most Catholics want some form of birth control. Since the church doesn't have to pay. What's the deal? The point is that all women will be covered by their insurance companies. We read in the papers every day about children being abandoned, victimized and demoralized. Imagine what will happen if women don't have the opportunity to plan their own families. Stupidity and ignorance abound on this line.

I think Obama used a slick one
the contrast is better than black against white
women rights against religious interference with social difference
salvation is between the person and his God not by the church dictations
