Sgt. Manuel Loggins Jr. was shot early Tuesday as he started to get into the SUV where his two daughters -- 9 and 14 -- were sitting, authorities said. Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the department, said the deputy was fearful that Loggins -- who he said (supposedly) appeared to be acting irrationally -- was about to drive off with the girls.
"The real threat that was perceived was the safety of the children," Amormino said.
"The deputy formed an opinion that he had a deep concern for the children, that he would not allow Mr. Loggins to drive away with the kids," Amormino said.
A former commanding officer said Loggins routinely went to the school with his daughters during the early-morning hours to walk the track and read the Bible.
Amormino said Loggins was not armed and that it doesn’t appear the incident was alcohol- or drug-related.
The shooting is being investigated by the Orange County district attorney's office. The deputy, a 15-year veteran, is on paid leave, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.
Loggins was from Joliet, Ill., and joined the Marines in 1998. He had a reputation as being a deeply religious man who put a premium on his family and his work.
Aaron Banks, 28, who served with Loggins for a year in Hawaii, described him as a "poster boy" for the Marines.
"He was everything I wanted to be as far as a Marine and a person," Banks, of South El Monte, said. "He basically schooled me up."
He said he and his colleagues are confused by the shooting. "We're all upset," he said.
Sgt. James Chavis, 28, who also served with Loggins in Hawaii, said he was equally surprised.
"Manny was not one of those people who disobeyed commands," he said.

@TNT93535. I can't believe you are still up to your old tricks. You got kicked off of You Tube and I see you've toned down your language. Some people do learn their lessons I guess. I was still right on all of our arguments.

I can only gather that the reason TNT93535 thinks the MURDER of this man was justified is because he is also a cop that places no value on human life.
In regards to the details/lies not mentioned in this article you will notice they weren't mentioned in the linked article from the LA Times either, that was in a different article posted at a later time. Ask yourself, why were these facts/lies about Loggins driving through a gate not mentioned in the article originally posted? I guess the sheriffs needed a little time to make up a story that ignorant people would believe, and doesn't add up. Again, why not remove the children from the vehicle during the time Loggins was away from the vehicle?
Answer: The unspoken rule of police officers when dealing with a black 'suspect' is this - shoot 1st, ask questions later; guilty until proven innocent. And a more recent STORY I read states that the officer was leaning in the window confronting Loggins, so why not use a taser? To me it seems the police officer used poor judgement to begin with and it is the officer who is at fault for MURDERING this man when there were other options.
Unfortunately Loggins didn't have the complexion for protection. Had he been white I'm sure he'd still be alive to tell his side of the story.
I recall a year or 2 ago a white man was ARRESTED (not MURDERED) for shooting a gun into the air in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. Justice for all? No.By the way, just because a police officer/sheriff makes a statement doesn't mean it's the TRUTH and without proof it is not a FACT.

I notice that this article is missing the most important pieces of info that LA Times published.
1. The gate to the school was locked.
2. The officer witnessed Loggins drive his SUV through that gate recklessly.
3. There were roughly half a dozen officers there by the time the shooting occured, all of whom were talking to Loggins who ignored ALL of them. You say he was unarmed? I say he was behind the wheel of a 2 ton weapon that he had already proven he was willing to use that way.
This could've been avoided if Loggins didn't batter down a gate. It also could've been avoided if he had replied to the officers when they asked him what he was doing. You can even argue that the officers should've cuffed him before he entered the truck. But once he was behind the wheel, tazers and pepperspray don't go through closed car doors and windows.

TNT93535:
Yes, the officers did claim that happened, but since Sgt. Loggins isn't here to speak for himself and since police are known to lie to cover themselves from unwanted repercussions of their ignorant behavior (see "Officer threatens to make up evidence after arrest of innocent men" http://bit.ly/z5aKqy ), I didn't quote that.
I reported the story from another perspective, that's the joy of Current, I don't have the media moguls or police department to report to or threaten me... yet.Do I believe that happened? No. Do I think the officers had other options besides killing him? Yes.
If what the police say is true, why didn't they secure the vehicle and children when he was outside of it? The police said they didn't know where Loggins was for at least 5 minutes, that would have been a perfect time to rescue the children if that's what they were truly worried about. But to wait until Loggins was about to get back into the vehicle? That makes no sense. Logic > Lies. - 3 months ago

The problem with your theory is that it requires that the notoriously leftwing and anti-cop LA times aid the cops in a cover up. I find that too ridiculous to believe. Add that not one person from the school has stepped up to claim that the school wasn't locked. There's another leftwing institution helping cover this up, which makes it impossible from where I sit.
the idea that cops go around shooting people for no reason is illogical. Something was wrong with Loggins that morning. When he refused to even try to explain his actions he brought this on himself.

The problem with your theory is that you haven't done much research.
But I do agree with you, to the average person it does seem ILLOGICAL cops shoot and kill people for no reason at all, but it has happened, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Aiyana Jones, Amadou Diallo, Kathryn Johnston, Tyisha Miller, and the list goes on.
Another problem with your theory is that you believe mass media is NOT biased and that all people are honest all the time, I wish you were right, unfortunately this is the real world, people lie, and kill innocent people. - 3 months ago

Quite the contrary, I KNOW that the media is horribly biased. The problem is that their bias is far to the left and anti-cop. Which is why I see the idea of anti-cop media helping cops in a cover up as being so ridiculous. Also, breaking onto a closed campus, destroying property and trespassing are not the actions of an innocent.
This would've ended without bloodshed if only Loggins had acted. Even telling the cops to fuck off would've been preferable to his silent act. At least then they would've known he wasn't so stoned out of his mind that he couldn't perceive reality.

TNT93535:
I read your reply again and had to do a double take, you stated:
"When he refused to even try to explain his actions he brought this on himself."
If it is true that he didn't "explain his actions" that still does not justify killing him. According to your logic that would also apply to people like Steven Eugene Washington, killed by the police because he did not respond to their demands due to the fact that he was AUTISTIC, which is a serious disorder of neural development characterized by severe deficits in SOCIAL INTERACTION and COMMUNICATION.
No Loggins wasn't Autistic, but we have no PROOF of what happened other than the words of a paid assassin, who again, could have 'rescued' the children prior to Loggins returning to the car, or even a nonlethal shot. But to say it's his fault that he's dead because he didn't explain himself?!... wow. I don't want cops or people like you policing society if they don't have critical thinking skills and resort to murder when things don't go their way.

Not only did he not explain anything, he didn't respond to the police in any way. He is not deaf or mute, yet he acted as if the cops weren't even there. That is not the way a rational human being acts! For all the cops knew, he was so stoned out of his mind that he was hallucinating and didn't see what was going on around him. Which makes letting him drive away in the truck a brilliant idea.
If they had let him drive away they would've been blamed when he turned the corner and ran down some little old lady. That's why he had to be stopped.
BTW, contrary to what action movies show, cops don't fire nonlethal shots. It's against the policy of every single law enforcement agency in the US. If the trigger is pulled, something better die.
The fact that you'd let an irrational fool who had proven himself willing to use his truck as a weapon drive away tells me YOU are the one who isn't capable of thinking.

I was stationed with and served with this man for nearly 5 years. His depiction is exactly as described, he was a very religious man, soft spoken, but adorned by all that knew him. He cared deeply for his family and believed in a very nuturing and spiritual surrounding. He was always willing to help out anyone that asked. When i didn't have money to provide christmas for my child, Loggins came through. When I needed advise and help with my career, marriage, and spiritual walk, he always had an open ear. We accept the risk of loss in combat, but never would expect to loss one of my greatest friends due to a trigger happy police officer, they have many less lethal weapons at their disposal, so why pull the trigger. Racism at its finest. You robbed a wife of her husband, children of thier father, parents of a son, and many Marines of a great mentor.

This is just another example of the way cops think or don't think today! Why didn't the officer approach this man and ask questions if he truely felt there was a problem? He shot this man down in cold blood that's murder & he should face charges for it!

Unfortunately the source cited provided no more information than the post. I'm in a bit of a quandary as to just why the Sgt. was shot as it appears that his only offense was to attempt to drive his children home from the track. This makes no sense at all.

This sheriff's deputy is a cold blooded killer who hated black people and took that hatred out on this Sgt. What a tragedy for his two daughters.
I hope this sheriff's deputy gets shot in the same cold blooded way he took out the Sgt. Eye for a eye....a life for a life.
I could use a whole lot of cuss words right now because that is how I feel, but I am going to let it stand where it is with what I already posted.

Great sentiments, but what is this "support" you mention? How can the family be "supported" and what will you yourself do in this regard?
The "we" you refer to ("...we've become - bloody savages...") does not include the 1%, right? They're above all of this, no? They hire the politicians who in turn hire the cops to pave the way for the lifestyles of the rich and famous. I doubt you're going to help support the bereaved family - send them money, for example, or make dinner for them - so maybe support for the family might be limited to rage against the machine. Maybe when the call actually comes you'll answer.

I meant the cop. Loggins was the victim. If it was anyone else that killed him, "conservatives" and their allies in the "press" would be screaming for the death penalty. I have a friend whose kid got killed by a cop a few years back - pulled over for a traffic stop, the cop thought he was reaching for a weapon and blew him away. The kid was unarmed and not dangerous. A good kid. No recourse, no punishment for the cop, business as usual. If the kid was driving an upscale car and had a suit and tie - if he looked like he might have been a part of the 1%, in short - he'd have been ok. The cops are not much more than lickspittles for the elite, protecting them and keeping the hoi polloi in line. Soon they'll be privatized, too, just like prisons. Think Blackwater, or Xe, or whatever they're called these days.
