Obama Punks the GOP on Contraception

That's the nitty-gritty. The fun part of this is that Obama just pulled a fast one on Republicans. He drew this out for two weeks, letting Republicans work themselves into a frenzy of anti-contraception rhetoric, all thinly disguised as concern for religious liberty, and then created a compromise that addressed their purported concerns but without actually reducing women's access to contraception, which is what this has always been about. (As Dana Goldstein reported in 2010, before the religious liberty gambit was brought up, the Catholic bishops were just demanding that women be denied access and told to abstain from sex instead.) With the fig leaf of religious liberty removed, Republicans are in a bad situation. They can either drop this and slink away knowing they've been punked, or they can double down. But in order to do so, they'll have to be more blatantly anti-contraception, a politically toxic move in a country where 99% of women have used contraception.
My guess is that they'll take their knocks and go home, but a lot of the damage has already been done. Romney was provoked repeatedly to go on the record saying negative things about contraception. Sure, it was in the frame of concern about religious liberty, but as this incident fades into memory, what most people will remember is that Republicans picked a fight with Obama over contraception coverage and lost. This also gave Obama a chance to highlight this benefit and take full credit for it. Obama needs young female voters to turn out at the polls in November, and hijacking two weeks of the news cycle to send the message that he's going to get you your birth control for free is a big win for him in that department. I expect to see some ads in the fall showing Romney saying hostile things about contraception and health care reform, with the message that free birth control is going away if he's elected. It's all so perfect that I'm inclined to think this was Obama's plan all along.

What I find most interesting is that Conservatives bitch about having a welfare system that assists children yet they bitch about contraception, and they moan and groan about abortion...so which is it? Do you want to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the resulting mouths to feed or help feed, clothe, educate, medicate and house those children born to poor families?

So we have a king who can force people to buy things they don't want/need, force companies to pay for elective items that customers want, takes money out of the treasury to pay for items that he deems necessary. Even if we take the religious aspect out of this this is wrong. He does not have the authority. The insurance companies caved to this tyrant. Make no mistake, this will not be free. In spite of what the king is saying, insurers will recoup this, probably on the backs of everyone else. Isn't that the way it works?
It is really too bad that Obamas mother did not have free access to birth control. - 3 months ago

With Rethuglicans , one day Obama is a "tyrant " and a "King" , the next day he's "weak" and " ineffective". An intersting dichotomy but a figment of the increasingly radically right wing, paranoid mind. But please keep musing upon it ; the more you rant and rave so ridiculously, the more reasonable people realize that Obama offers the only logical and sane alternative to this extremist republican fantasy.

First of all this has nothing to do with religious liberty, and everything to do with religious implication. Republicans and their religiously deluded cronies have been crying about this for decades. Second, has anyone else noticed that this issue happened just after the jobs numbers came out and unemployment is down, and jobs up.

This was NOT a "compromise" in any real sense as women in the workforce will STILL get free contraception.
It was a LATERAL MOVE to quell the religious organizations (which it did) and leave the Republicans without a talking point... just standing there with their dicks in their hands (which it did as well).

Fuck that, God has nothing to do with it, there is no way in hell employers should be required to cover contraception....
You get condoms free at EVERY health department I've heard of, they even give "the (birth control) pill" away at several county health-departments I'm personally aware of...
Now on top of the government already GIVING away free birth control in multiple forms, your employer is expected to cover such fees as a part of "health-care" coverage?
That's about the most fucking retarded shit I've ever heard, and I'm a fan of birth control......

We are heading to a nation of completely privately built and privately funded hospitalization services with accompanying private insurance companies to support them and only them. The US government will not be allowed to step foot into any of these facilities for any reason. Beware! Such facilities will deliver world class treatment for members and turn you away at the door if you are not. So that leaves the rest of you and maybe me. Dependent upon what? The US government to take care of us in their "accredited" facilities. The first laugh is not the last laugh when the money is not there.
This fight should ONLY be about reducing the price of hospitalization. Every other issue is counter-productive smoke and mirrors. I would start by proposing all medical personal pay NO TAXES. I would then have some discussion with legal limits on the "medical mistake" lawsuits from two fronts-cutting the balls off of lawyers with their ridiculous fees as well as the ridiculous settlements.
It is not what they "make" that drives happy doctors and nurses-it is what they "keep."
Insurance companies respond. As hard as it is to believe, rates in hospitals are outrageous for one reason and one reason only. Most people don't pay. 40 cents on the dollar the hospitals expect to collect on all billings. So they charge 2 1/2 times as much as they should. This figure was given to me by the head accountant at our local hospital in a city of 35,000. He said it is very typical nation wide.
So the fees are jacked. So the insurance companies don't feel like being jacked. So it goes. - 4 months ago

Whether Obama planned this all along is mute. He did, however, show what true compromise is and it certainly brought to light the extreme right's views on contraception and women's health. I haven't quite figured out what the GOP thinks it's going to gain by attacking women's rights.
I also haven't quite figured out why any woman would support the GOP's radical agenda. Are there women out there that don't know that the GOP candidates have promised to defund Planned Parenthood, ban contraception, ban abortion (so women will revert to unsafe back-room abortions), repeal the Affordable Health Care Act (so you will no longer be covered for pre-conditions and your kid under 26 will no longer be covered under your plan)?

Obama used the opportunity to convey to the electorate that he is the one that is willing to compromise on contentious issues. It shouldn't change the bottom line that women will still receive contraception for no co-pay, it will just be Big Insurance that will pick up the tab, not the religious cry babies that want the country to be run as a theocracy instead of a democracy. Phony outrage and phony election controversy to get the limp dick base to get excited about the loser candidate they eventually nominate. When religion comes into the political equation lunacy always ensues, that's a given.

Right now there is big controversy going on in the city of Milwaukee where the local Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to get out of paying settlements to victims of clergy abuse. There was a deadline of this past Monday and they received about 550 claims. Now the "good-hearted" Archdiocese is trying to nullify about 90% of the claims put in. These people never know when to stop the religious hypocrisy. If they can't be dismembered, they should at least be castrated.

OK here is my point of contention on this whole debacle... the "compromise" was already included in his plan, clear back at the very beginning. It was the same standardized "loophole" for the religious employers that has been used in similar legislation in 20 states, and actually forces 8 states to open up thier regulations to include this loophole that previously had not existed. If anything here the POTUS gave the religious-right a win in 8 states and handed them an easy compromise on the 22 states that had not previously had similar regulations in place. Now as far as the public in general will view this is up in the air, but we know the republicans will now be claiming "victory" in this "compromise" that no clearly thinking american should even consider anything other a well written piece of legislation that protects womens' rights while not impeding on the rights of the religious to start with.

I've had a change of heart on this. I watched Countdown last night and when Markos Moulitsas was talking to Sam Seder about this, I saw the perfection of Obama's compromise.
