She opened a swap shop were people could trade goods or services for other goods and services and this made her ask questions about her own life and the way we do things on a day to day basis.
She began by not buying anything until she first gave something away. Eventually, she found that she was spending almost nothing and everything she needed was finding it's way into her life.

Cool, story inspired By Kelly, who was inspired by Zeitgeist/Venus Project, who was inspired by many cultures, most of which are now non existent.... And the concept is what existed as a means to acquire things since long before money...
Funny everyone from country folks (people living in rural areas) to crack-heads have been constantly bartering, and going without using money, whenever possible, for a long time now....
Working on setting up a completely sustainable, closed loop, permaculture with organic gardening home-stead of sorts (taking a while, seems doing so with no money...... is a bit difficult, then there's the taking in occasional "strays", getting side tracked, trying to keep other people from going under).... In the hopes of one day being able to produce enough healthy, safe, non-GE food to never have to rely on the "system" or money.... And if the dollar were to collapse, food is still going to hold some serious value.....
I like allot of the concepts in "Zeitgeist" and those of the "The Venus Project", but as far as wanting to pay lip-service to, and promote ideas older than the labels they helped make, and then attribute them to the new label/movement.... Idk, if Kelly would quit posting their "name brand" videos/stories, and post more independent stuff not preaching directly from the cult of "Zeitgeist", and using that label I'd probably be more accepting....

This is a post about a woman who has not used money in fifteen years and how she does it. Who said bartering is a new idea? If an idea is good, what difference does it make who is promoting it.

YAY ! Money DOES distract us from all the good and kindness people have within them . Can you imagine if this power were unleashed ? It would be a lot more fun .

I totally understand what she did. I have been on a "mobile downward" slide for the last 4 years and I am amazed at my new ability to manage money. If only I had these new skills all along! However, I am becoming a different person; I don't care to make a ton of money any more. There is another way to get along and this woman is a role model for some of us.

Minimalize your life and don't buy into advertisement or keeping up with the Jones's. Hugs and well wishes are free

This is very interesting mindset. I guess all services, and products in this trade have equal value.

I think the value of an object or service is a matter of whether one needs them or not . A plumber is of no value to me today, but that can change in a matter of hours (and I hope not). Out of curiosity I took inventory of the things around my place after I heard about this woman, and there is a lot of stuff that I would be willing to part with if I needed something else or some kind of service.

people seem to have a hard time deciphering the difference between wants and needs...have much myself purchased through want that I would now trade for needs

Maybe the want of things can be the root of a lot of our problems too. Evil or not.

The idea that do not have anything someone else may need when I am desperate for plumber is giving me tension. I guess it's a different mindset that the plumber may come days or weeks later and that may be ok for some.

Every experience shape a person's character, but it should not prevent future exposure to new experiences. This article opens eyes on another angle in life that we here in US do not get exposed to. Sadly, in US money is everything.

a perfect example of how a lack of money is where happiness resides, will have to look up the long version.

Preach the morals of the bible all you want, most atheists like me understand ethics and fair treatment. It's those who use the bible to preach their own morals that are of concern.

Wasn't trying to preach the morals of the bible. Nor do I think that is were human morality comes from. Just pointing out that there are statements in it that are hard to disagree with. I agree, there are some very immoral individuals who use it for their own purposes.

There is a full length feature film about this woman that I think would be very interesting viewing.
