By Stephen D. Foster Jr.
Bolstered by sweeping victories in Missouri, Minnesota, and Colorado this past Tuesday, Rick Santorum has taken a commanding lead over the rest of the Republican candidates in the latest Public Policy Polling survey.
Santorum has an astounding 15 point lead over his closest opponent, Mitt Romney, 38% to 23%. Newt Gingrich is in third with 17%, and Ron Paul is still languishing in last place with 13%. According to PPP,
“Santorum is now completely dominating with several key segments of the electorate, especially the most right leaning parts of the party. With those describing themselves as ‘very conservative,’ he’s now winning a majority of voters at 53% to 20% for Gingrich and 15% for Romney. Santorum gets a majority with Tea Party voters as well at 51% to 24% for Gingrich and 12% for Romney. And with Evangelicals he falls just short of a majority with 45% to 21% for Gingrich and 18% for Romney.”
This is not good news for Mitt Romney, who has seen his favorability numbers plummet since December and was considered to be not only the front-runner, but the entitled candidate to be the Republican nominee against President Obama this fall. The once seemingly unstoppable former Massachusetts Governor had a 55% favorability rating with 31% unfavorable, and that has now dissolved into a 44/43 rating. Just like Mitt, the voters can’t make up their minds. Santorum meanwhile, has seen his favorability skyrocket to a whopping 64% with only 22% unfavorable. Santorum’s platform has been by far the most conservative of all the candidates and he has consistently referred to himself as the only true conservative running in the race.
Santorum could benefit from even more support if Newt Gingrich would drop out of the race. 58% of Gingrich supporters would switch to the former Pennsylvania Senator if Gingrich ended his campaign right now. Only 22% would switch to Romney. If this Republican race for the nomination has taught us anything, however, it’s that the leader doesn’t last too long before being knocked off their high horse. Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, and Rick Perry all had their turn at the top of the lineup and each struck out. Santorum once rode high going into Iowa, but his support dropped going into New Hampshire where Romney won the day. Then Gingrich became the new flavor of the month, but after winning South Carolina, he got crushed by Romney in Florida and has taken a lot of flack for his racist comments, his troubled past and his lack of campaign discipline and money. Romney, like his political philosophy, has been back and forth between first place, second place, and third place among the candidates. And now Rick Santorum is back to being number one at something besides Google searches.
At this point, anything goes in this primary battle royale and we should expect the fight to get meaner, uglier, and nastier as it continues. If you haven’t paid attention to the race so far, it’s time to get some popcorn ready and tune in because it’s going to be a wild and crazy ride to the finish that could be devastating to the Republican Party when the general election arrives. Half of the Republican electorate still has yet to decide who they fully support and the GOP is looking more and more divided and unorganized than ever. And that’s good news for President Obama.

Rick Santorum is perfect candidate for the GOP if it were the 18th century.

I remember just a few months ago everyone thought Santorum was a bigger joke than Bachmann and had zero chance of being nominated.

Do you see the light bulb that lit over my head? I have finally figured out why the GOP insiders are pushing for Mitt while their minions want Santorum. They know that Santorum is too conservative for the general public. However, Mitt is malleable and may come across in the general election as more acceptable. Mitt is so wishy-washy that they will be able to handle him and ensure that their agenda of taking over the country happens.
Be very scared my friends, it is not only going to be a bumpy ride for the GOP nominations, but a bumpy to November when the big guns come out to try to destroy Obama.

Right. Been that way for months now..... Mitt versus not-Mitt. And it's not gonna change anytime soon. I think it's gonna be a case of "none of the above" come summer. If the GOP think (secretly) they've got no chance, they'll run Romney. It's Obama's to lose at this point. If he screws up and leaves them an shot, they'll convince Chris Christie to run.

You maybe right. But I cannot understand the GOP's love for Christie. He reminds me of a mean nasty neighbor. I'm waiting for him to have a massive coronary, he looks so unhealthy. Of course the GOP seem like pigs at a trough these days so he fits right in with them.

Obama gonna crush his enemies, drive them before him as cheap sheep and hear the bleating lamentations of their women sheep.
Obama is resting in his corner while GOPers slog away at each other drawing blood, to no avail cause the Crusher hasn't even been turned on yet. That's my objective & un-biased assessment.
All Obama lacks is the big fat sword and a round pointy helmet. And a flute to send em running into the river. Ker-splash!

The GOP faithful want a guy who lost his last bid for re-election in his home state by 18 points as their presidential nominee? This party does love political reclamation projects. It ended so well with Nixon after he was pronounced dead politically and they revived him for his eventual marquee place in the Political Disgrace Hall of Fame. They must've finally officially given up on bringing Zombie Reagan back from Hell to run for a 3rd term. So it's Ricky Santorum's turn to take the role of The Gipper. Another bad B movie in the works. It is just surprising that they want Peter Lorre to play the lead instead of John Wayne.

Perhaps Zombie Reagan is simply using Ricky's body as a mean's of reclaiming the White House. But, I must obseve that it's a rather poor choice of vehicles.

I think his number one choice turned out to be a non-starter. Something about being born in Africa that put the kibosh on it.

That's it!!! Reagan caught the Alzheimer's virus from working too much with chimps!!! Thanks Man! Life wasn't complete without figuring that out!
Reagan had a gene weakness that allowed the monkey virus to jump. HA HA! And once again I beat the entire American Medical Community!

I think the GOP base wants ANYONE but Mitt Romney. They refuse to swallow the bitter pill of nominating a candidate that they all know isn't a real conservative. They would rather cut their throats with Santorum than create this phony excitement in November again.

If the GOP really wants Santorum as their nominee, well, bless their little hearts. More power to them.
