He's taking a risk with Santorum breathing down his neck, but he knows he can't win the general as a conservative and trying to parallel Santorum's "crazy" will paint him so far to the right, that he'd be useless as a candidate. I also think the rethuglicans are going to rig primaries to his benefit.
