In 1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association about the “walls of the separation of church and state”. Jefferson wrote the following,” … I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.” In this eloquent statement, Jefferson reemphasized that in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that church and state should remain separate at all cost. This doctrine served this country well for over 200 years.
