Carbonite dropping Rush. Apology not enough to let his behavior slide

From Carbonite CEO David Friend:

“No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.”

They have a facebook page if you on on FB and would like to thank them.

A group of female veterans want Limbaugh off Armed Forces Radio

"Rush Limbaugh has a freedom of speech and can say what he wants, but in light of his horribly misogynistic comments, American Forces Radio should no longer give him a platform. Our entire military depends on troops respecting each other – women and men. There simply can be no place on military airwaves for sentiments that would undermine that respect. When many of our female troops use birth control, for Limbaugh to say they are “sluts” and “prostitutes” is beyond the pale. It isn’t just disrespectful to our women serving our country, but it’s language that goes against everything that makes our military work. Again, we swore to uphold our Constitution, including the freedom of speech, and would not take that away from anyone – even Limbaugh. But that does not mean AFN should broadcast him. In fact, it shouldn’t."

Let Sec of Defense know you want Limbaugh off Armed Forces Radio.

Personal note: With all the problems female service members have with rape going on and not being taken seriously by too much of the brass, the addition of Limbaugh's constant denigration of women can't be making things any easier for the troops who happen to be female and their male counterparts who know you don't attack a comrade but see it happen too often.

    • Nice to know some advertisers are reacting appropriately. What about the rest, what about the broadcaster that allows this slime to continue spewiing his hate, and his raciist opinions. He should be fired.
Too bad we don't have any legal recourse for hate crimes promoted on air.

    • For lent, I gave up suffering fools gladly. Seems like a lot of other people did the same. Good on 'em.

And you don't have to be Catholic to give up putting up with fools for lent. I'm not, but I figured it would give me a few weeks to break a bad habit and learn a good one.

Oooh good point. Haven't heard anyone else point out what took them so long. It might just be a case of ruthless opportunism. Carbonite is a data-storage company, lots of liberals & progressives in the tech industry, even though they were supporting Limbaugh's show. They had to know you can't buy advertising as golden as bitch-slapping a loudmouth right in his bank account.

I think it is kind of a weird fit. I get e-harmony. I imagine the average misogynist Limbaugh listener does not get much real dating opportunity after he opens his mouth in front of a woman, but is Carbonite really a sought after service for an asian school girl or bestiality porn collection? :)

Corporations are notoriously slow learners? Then again, if people don't remind them that people are customers who will, and do, vote with their feet, corporations have little reason to learn/change.

Not many people will change unless they are made uncomfortable enough. Corporations, with all their layers, probably need more prodding to get the message that they are about to be 'uncomfortable'.

Seems the reason the minority which is the hard right and xian (Christian is a term I reserve for those who walk the walk ;^) ) fundies get their way so often is that they make a lot of noise and have for many years.

Liberals, by their nature, are more likely to live and let live. So we don't throw our collective weight around in the market place as often and the control freaks on the right.

      The times, they are a-changing.

Liberal. Proud. From now on, LOUD.

    • If I were running Clear Channel, I would insist that Rush have a co-host. Dead air like IDLE HANDS ARE THE DEVIL'S TOOLS - The Co-host would have control of the booth, in the same manner that a driving instructor has a dual steering wheel. When Rush started driving off a cliff, the co-host would talk over him, go to commercial, hit buzzers and weird sound effects, spray Rush with a seltzer bottle, change his diaper. . . whatever was necessary. This way free political speech for the socially retarded could be preserved with a safeguard against slander and commercial suicide.

My heart is with you but my head tells me that if progressives want to checkmate this king of hate, we need to relentlessly follow up on the "slander, libel, indecency lawsuit and regulatory" attack; or the "King" will make a strategic retreat and regroup, and advantage will be lost.

Wish that would work, but every liberal lawyer I have read on the topic as relates to this incident said the case just wouldn't go anywhere because Ms Flock could be considered a public persona.

I would disagree that she was a public person legally. I would also explore the suppression of her political right to seek redress from Congress by a conspiracy headed by Rush to intimidate private citizens over the public airwaves.

P.S. You don't always have to win a lawsuit to win the battle of public opinion. I'd file because its the right thing to do, and if a judge decides a reasonable legal question is presented, and a jury decides that compensation is justified, then maybe Rush will decide its time to join all the what's their names and used to be(s) on satellite radio.

I agree with Kelpie; just make up a name, open a gmail (or such) email account with that name, and viola! You're good to go.

Facebook is a threat to one's privacy, only if one puts information that is private on it. Don't post pictures that can ID you or where you live. Maybe even have a couple accounts, and keep them separate re what info, sorts of postings you make, if any.

Facebook seems petty and silly, but there is a whole lot of good stuff being done on it now. One can create 'groups' and have them open or private, by invitation only. Some pals of mine, scattered across the country, have a little group solely for reporting, and commenting on various things going on in legislatures around the nation. By each keeping an eye on our state then sharing items that might not make the news, we discern patterns and agendas that are NOT local and we can get information out to others.

Twitter is also great. Don't use your name. Do the same drill, create a separate email and persona if you want. Then you can follow groups, journos, pols who are helpful in keeping you informed. It amazes me the great links I find via the few journos I choose to follow on twitter. Don't have to 'tweet' anything, but you can find some most helpful items.

Food for thought. Social media does not have to be a silly reality show staring you. It can be a very valuable tool.

    • Kudos to the CEO of Carbonite. I was just saying that today. It's isn't really a woman only issue. It's our family member's issues. Everyone is not 'fair game' in the name of politics. Kodos for the CEO of Carbonite for holding Rush accountable, using the power of the purse. Money talks in America.

He picked on the character of a woman who selflessly spoke for those without voice on a serious matter. He screwed the pooch by thinking she didn't have people who agree with, and admire, her. LOTS of people.

He sits in a booth, with few people around because he is socially inept. He forgets that he is not just speaking to his nodding heads. He forgets others are paying attention.

He just learned the others paying attention can lead a big hit on his bank account.

Understandable. If given the facts, they continued to fund him, knowing
that he's Libeled someone, they may as well take their cash and flush it
down the toilet. It's possible they also could be sued along with gasbag.
Rush Limburger, a misfit with too much ambition + the gift of gab who got
so intoxicated on hearing himself speak, he got swept away with his emotions.
I saw his histrionic display while he was on the air broadcasting. Sickening.

    • This should be the last straw for Rush. I don't understand how any respectful person would be associated with characterless, vulgar people like him. Business or otherwise.
He is constantly referring to President Obama as a male child, however, the president is a perfect example of a real man. Rush could learn a thing or two, from him.
It is the beginning of the end for Rush Limbaugh's obscene reign over the spineless Right-Wing politicians, and his comatose fans.

Slut is just SUCH a demeaning word.

My take on it is "slut" is not quite as demeaning as the C-word, but it's the next worse thing.

If the C-word is to women as the N-word is to blacks...

... then "slut" is every bit as bad as "boy."

Yes, actually, it is. Liberals try to uphold our end of an intelligent debate, but conservatives lie and deny, day after day, and finally start flagging when they can't hide the fact they are losing the argument. Many good people have been lost that way, and many horrible conservative trolls are still here, posting with impunity.
