(Reuters) - Al Gore's Current TV has bigger problems to deal with than a potential lawsuit from fired news anchor Keith Olbermann - namely not getting kicked off Time Warner Cable for low ratingsUPDATE
Peter Lauria's story reports that Current TV's agreement with Time Warner stipulates that if the network fails to draw a minimum number of viewers over a quarter -- the Reuters report does not specify what the number is -- "financial penalties such as Current TV being required to increase marketing and promotion spending on the cable operator's systems are triggered." Missing that target over two quarters allows Time Warner, the nation's fourth-largest cable provider, to drop the network from its channel lineup entirely. "If it was not for Olbermann's show, which averaged a total of 177,000 viewers per night, Current TV likely would have missed Time Warner Cable's viewership benchmark, said one of the sources," Lauria writes. But he goes on to report that the 47,000 viewers Eliot Spitzer's Viewpoint has been pulling in have kept the network in compliance with Time Warner's quotas. The network debuted a new morning lineup in late March, boosting its ratings by 150 percent, Lauria notes. And a Current TV representative told him: "We are fully in compliance with our Time Warner Cable contract and all indications show that even with Keith leaving we will continue to be in compliance."
Even if Current isn't at imminent risk, Olbermann really should see that as good news for the lawsuit against he is threatening. Networks that get dropped from big-time cable providers aren't the kind of networks with $40 million lying around to pay people like Olbermann.

It gets worse: Hyatt “threatened to derail Olbermann’s career” before the show debuted last June unless he banned his manager, lawyers and agents from all interactions with Current. Hyatt, a wealthy attorney, “blackmailed Olbermann into agreeing” to put himself “in the position of “fending for himself without benefit of hired advisors. Olbermann gave into Hyatt’s blackmail for the purpose of saving the premiere of the program and the jobs of those who worked on it. Olbermann left the meeting devastated at having discovered that he was working for a blackmailer.”

Yeah, this article was tweeted by Cenk himself.
I think the other hosts are frustrated at Olbermann trying to bring down the network.Last night, Granholm told Spitzer she was more than grateful that he mentioned her show on his program. The poor woman was ostracized by Keith even during the Michigan primary.
Keith is a genius but with some obvious defects. But what can you expect from a genious. Too bad Current couldn't manage his genius and use it more appropriately. Ultimately, the fault is Currents. Yes, Keith is a son of a bitch, but you figure out a way to handle a son of a bitch if he is a genious.
That is my humble opinion. Thanks for listening.

Then how do you explain the other hosts promoting Current and doing very well at their jobs. This is where Keith's argument breaks down. He refused to do promotions or even mention the next program. Much of what Keith did was pouting and that turned off lots of viewers and drove his ratings down.
I am a fan of Keith too, Its just that he wasn't the right guy for Current, he needs to be on the grand stage. Current is not the grand stage. I think he will land on his feet and do very well.

all of television is sliding down - the Internet provides more truth per day, less advertising and BS. I have satellite and Keith was one of the only sources (next to Free Speech TV and Link) for progressive news about Occupy. Current is no longer current...I may be dishing Dish soon...

Olbermann suing Current for 40 million? What they pay him the full 10 million for the first year, and he wants the 10 million a year for the next 4 years when he wasn't living up to contractual obligations which was the reason he was fired to begin with?...
Bullshit, you don't meet the terms of your employment, you're fired, end of story. It wasn't wrongful termination, but Olbermann seems to now be into extortion.....
My my Keith, that's not going to look good to future employers.

My last thought on this point.
Current TV was before its time -- I think.I do hope that this concept (VC2) does reinvent itself in 5-10 years.
Another failed experiment was Bar Karma, before it's time I think.
Also, Fourth and Forever, people don't care about high school football players in a low income area trying to make the best of their lives. They are more interested in high school football players raping and doing drugs. This was one of the most positive documentaries I have ever seen on young athletes from a poor socio-economic background. Again, nobody cared. But if they were raping girls and fighting it would have been a ratings success.

Bar Karma just didn't have long enough episode to achieve what it had in mind - it needed more time for character development and continuing themes ; it tried to split the difference between "Cheers" and "The Twilight Zone" and ended up substantially weak on both fronts.

Bar Karma had great potential and I was sorry to see it go. I wouldn't at all be surprised if an adaptation re-surfaces on another channel, since there are few original ideas in programming these days. It seems Current TV is forever in flux, trying to find itself, it's niche, it's audience, it's purpose which they seem to have in common with other stations.

It must be very hard to swtich from a business model of VC2 and documentaries to prime time cable news with big names such as Keith Olbermann, I can only imagine the massive changes.

This is good for public access TV and CSPAN.Also, try out USTREAM, this is a great forum for that type of information.

What do you propose?
I don't see an exit strategy.Unfortunately, Keith didn't work out and he refused to do his very best despite any technical problems he was having. If it were me, I hope that I would have been more professional and did the best job I could do and help promote the network and other hosts.
But I am sure he has good reasons for not doing this. Perhaps he thought it wasn't worth his effort and time.

Well it could have been Keith's strategy, piss them off to the point of firing him. The best time to leave a sinking ship is before everyone else becomes aware it is sinking.
imo Keith's biggest fan is himself, and it is trait that creates riffs in the work place. He's got a good broadcast voice and is sharp as a tack, he's much better being the subject of a live unscripted interview.
