Who Gets to Write the Story of the Palestinians?

Image
jubal
This article deals with how an entire people's experience can be erased by those who get to write the story about them.

Excerpt:
By Sarah Macaraeg, Truthout | News Analysis
After discovering during a recent train trip that Sabra hummus, a boycott target of the Palestine solidarity movement, was served on Amtrak, I wrote this essay to tackle what the Sabra brand's presence on the train evoked for me, the child of a railroad worker: the grim intersections of oppression at home and abroad. Presented in five vignettes, the following thoughts are shaped by the Asian-American experience and by the state of urgency that is anti-racism in the era of Trayvon Martin. I wrote this piece with my fellow people in mind - that is, those people who are compelled to change the world and are trying to figure out how to do it effectively.

    • Really--hummus?

I will look forward to information concerning the organization of boycotts of goods from certain other countries for the 5000 victims a year of honor killings, "acid violence," denial of even minimal gay rights, laws against women driving or voting, bombings as a legitimate response to cartoons, and so on. Waiting...waiting....

    • it is a shame, and the palestinians should be able to write their story.but the palestinian authority doesnt seem to be to keen on that, leaving it up to others to do it instead.but remember never to be mad at them for that, only israel.
from whom ironicaly all information(good/bad or other wise) on this matter comes from.as they are the only free speech valuing entity in the region.

ever notice how their is no shortage of footage from ww2 of the attrocities done to the jews.no shortage of people available to give testimony as to the events that occured.victims, soldiers, partisans, what have you.

their is even no shortage of footage showing the zionists alliyahs of the early 1900's, all the way to 48 when israel declared independance.

footage showing the very palestinians in question.

yet no testimony from the palestinians to corroberate all the myriad of tales various palestinian authorities have claimed?
no video showing all these attrocities that supposedly happened, which would be really helpfull in lue of testimony.

all this from a people whos population has only grown.literaly offering them nothing but exponential opportunities to tell their story.yet from them silence.even from those who came to the west.

but hey, fuck reality.just keep on blaming israel for everything.pretend the palestinians didnt have all of the region(including jordan) but 9 miles to do with as they pleased and waged war with it.lets ignore the palestinian entities that have lead the people into, and kept them stiffled in this situation.always blame israel

    • A sad story that can only be written by those who deserve justice when the rest of us speak out against it. In the end, who will write the human epitaph?

Amen, boycotting goes a long way to reaching some goals. And truly we as humans must write our own story and not allow the elites to make history. We all are a book waiting to be written.

    • I hope the Palestinians get to write it . It seems to me similar tragedy to the Native Americans in our culture . I have many books written by them , and their perspective is worthy , indeed vital to understanding the TRUTH about ourselves and our world . If you ain't got the truth , You ain't got nuthin' .

aint it wierd how the native americans have suffered an actual genoicide making the opportunities for first hand accounts of events rare, yet they have offered so much detailed information on what happened.
while the palestinians have literaly only grown in population, yet so few books,memiors,movies,anything.hmmm.

you would think it would be the other way around huh?with less than a million tribal native americans less their would be very little in the way of first hand experiences to hear about, and with the palestinians being 7 million nonassimilated their would be a ton of material.

yet not so much.but hey, ignore the man behind the curtain and it will all make sense and be right as rain.im sure it is just a coincidence that 99% percent of material on this matter from the palestinians side happen to be people who have a specific bone with israel or jews.pure coincidence.im sure when it comes to telling the tale of the palestinians they magicaly become objective

Indeed, they are writing it, but the Western media censors it or labels it as terrorist. Labeling something "terrorist" in today's media is the quickest way to marginalize an entire nation of people.

maybe because not all Jewish folks agree with the atrocities perpetrated by their government....you know, like not all Americans agree with what our pompous, controlling, lying, stealing, cheating, murderous leaders do?

sure does, which would explain why it is we are always sending our troops to fight in wars to defend israel, rather than her standing alone.oops nope that would be the suadi kingdom through opec that has us sacrificing generations of our children in thier wars.

was it the israel lobby that is feeding us amonia washed beef like product?nope that was the beef lobby feeding us inedible foods mixed amongst actual foods.

could israel overcome killing millions upon millions of us for profit?it seems killing just one like rachel corrie is such a huge deal to some, and one liberty attack is obsessed over, and jonathan pollard ect, which wouldnt be the case if aipac were the tobacco lobby.who have killed more today, than israel has ever.

but yeah, its israel who is using lobbying power to manipulate the democratic process all right.giving us cancer for profit, feeding us ass meat and mad cow, and sending our kids off to die to keep the price of oil steady.yup that is aipac all right, not tobacco, oil, and beef.

tell me, which do you see at your gas station?israeli created electric energy making bank?or the corn lobby at work?

    • As Kenny said, History is "Written by the Victors", they claim...however the internet has really changed that concept! People's stories can now be told as they happen through social media and shared around the world in the blink of an eye.

Another thing the internet has done is open us up to the once secret connections of business and blood. Since I became a vegetarian you can imagine I've been eating a lot of hummus - I didn't know Sabra's connection to Strauss and Strauss's connection to the IDF!

Thanks for sharing, Jubal, it's sharing posts like this that get the word out! This is my favorite line from the article:

"Solidarity means we are responsible to all of humanity. Solidarity means acting on your own behalf is acting on behalf of others."

How wise! We'd all do well to remember those words!

Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google was just saying that the interent was becoming closed due to corporate control of its access and information flow.
He said with the current restrictions in place Google couldn't be started.
He noted that US government control of the internet under SOPA is no different than the systems of control of the internet in Iran, or in the one Google encountered in its struggles in China to provide the uncensored free flow of information.

The structure of the internet helps tremendously but it is still (and now more than ever) subject to manipulation, information mining, and delimiting control by government and corporate interests.

It is always a struggle to get the truth out but that is our responsiblity; each and every one of us.

if solidarity means we are responsible to all of humanity, why boycott the free state, and side with those subject to tyrany?
might as well boycott american goods and purchase only things made by afghanis under taliban rule?if their were such a thing.

      what would serve humanity better?
all of us being governed by a democratic society complete with socialized medicine?or the society that refuses concepts such as human rights, freedom while demanding the destruction of others?

    • The use of White Phosphorus is a War Crime!!!

The Givati brigade commander authorized the use of white phosphorous in bombing a UN compound housing 700 displaced civilians, as well as, the same day, a nearby hospital.

    • There is so much contained in this article to discuss.

      Another excerpt:
In 2008 came Operation Cast Lead, the three-week bombardment of Gaza, which led to 1,440 civilian deaths, 431 of them children. It was described as an act of genocide by UN General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann. The Givati brigade commander authorized the use of white phosphorous in bombing a UN compound housing 700 displaced civilians, as well as, the same day, a nearby hospital. Both brigades used Palestinian children as human shields, and it later surfaced that Givati brigade snipers sported a T-shirt featuring a target over a pregnant Palestinian woman with the words "1 shot 2 kills." Mother and daughter Raya and Majda Abu Hajjaj were two of the many casualties. They were shot and killed as they waved white flags.
In America, we are taught to consider this conflict as an issue separate from our own. Yet the United States has given Israel $115 billion in military and economic aid, to date - the cost of tending to a watchdog in the destroyed Middle East. Our tax dollars and our government aid and abet a murderous apartheid system abroad while they prop up a new Jim Crow at home, fostering a deadly situation for the Trayvon Martins and immigrants across the country. So, we do not recognize US borders, borders drawn on stolen land, an apartheid wall to our south. We will not do what we are taught. We will not look away, from anything, from now on.

remember that deal about repeating the story enough?
want to tell the whole story?what lead up to cast lead?how many military bases hamas has for israel to attack?or just stick with the story at hand?part of the problem or the solution?

how many innocent people have we killed in the last decade that hasnt been considered a genocide?it couldnt be cuz israel is being held to ridiculous standards and we arent right?despite killing literaly millions of innocent people

This story is the mainstream one that keeps getting repeated and repeated so that many people believe it to be the "only" story. Its a tired story already, we need to hear other voices.

we need to hear not other voices, but accurate voices.
next generation idiots spouting the same talking points does nothing for anyone.
we need to hear the voices that are presently being drowned out.
we need the palestinians to be availed of free speech.allowed to have complete internet access.

most inportantly it is up to us.
if we have the responsibility as human beings for one another, which we certainly do.then we have to finally begin to notice what is hate speech, and political bullshit in this issue so we can choose to ignore it for the garbage it is.rather than making that the story at hand.

but that is boring, and doesnt feed the emotional need to place blame.and that keeps the cycle going.

one side telling ya how much islam makes them murderers, the other telling you how israel is committing what ever buzzword is chosen for the day.aparthied, ethnic cleansing, genocide, when they arent doing any of that.all hyperbolic crap, that is us dancing to the beat of the bigots.

as long as we keep accepting this game, it will continue.
