"MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is giving up her citizenship in Switzerland.

The Minnesota Republican said Thursday she sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate asking for withdrawal of her Swiss citizenship. She said she wanted to make clear she is 100 percent committed to the United States.

    • I'm not satisfied that Michelle Bachmann has provided enough proof that she is 100% an American citizen or that she was born on Earth. I demand a long-form birth certificate AND a full analysis of her genome!

    • Honey, do us all a favor. Pack your bags and get the hell out of my country. And take that closet case of a husband with you too.

    • I want to see the response letter "officially" "cancelling" her Swiss citizenship. I want her to put it in the Congressional Record that she is now and from this day forward a citizen of only one country (United States); and that she will never seek any form of dual citizenship in the future. I believe we should have a law barring any dual citizenship individuals from serving in our Congress. This means everybody--- no Canadian, Israeli, or any other persons holding or eligible for dual citizenship.

Nah, that is draconian. Lots of good people were born to parents, or one parent, from another nation and have dual citizenship from birth. We need all the talent we can get. It's not a child's choice to whom he/she is born.

In Bachmann's case, she actively choose the dual citizenship option. She declined when the citizenship hit the fan. In her case, let the voters put her in political hell. It is something we need to remind her district of if/when she runs to pretend to represent them again.

You don't see a conflict of interest in that someone with e.g., a Swiss citizenship, on a banking rules committee, or on an investigating committee say of Swiss involvement and encouragement of tax evasion by American citizens, as a potential conflict. How about someone with an Israeli dual citizenship on an intelligence committee dealing with Iran? I see major conflict of interest problems.

I see transparent conflicts of interests, like dual citizenship, to be less of a problem than the HIDDEN conflicts of interests when corporations and the uber rich can buy politicians and put them on banking rules committee, or investigating the people/industries that basically bought them.

Conflicts of interest are systemic. Banning people who may hold the option of dual citizenship, which is generally a result of parentage, much like skin color or ethnic heritage, is no solution to the systemic problem. It would, however, act to keep people who may be more fair and ethical than the corporate whores our Supreme Court protect from adequate scrutiny by voters via allowing all those secret donors to weld such power in funding campaigns.

Joe Leiberman's wife made lots of money lobbying for particular industries that Joe was in a position to help. His citizenship was not the problem. And he is hardly unique in government.

Thanks, msii. Yep, there is a lot more to loyalty and moral compasses than the origin of one's parents.

Have to admit, this thing where a person can adopt dual citizenship from their spouse's option for it was an aspect I did not know about. Don't know if it applies to all nations, or just some, like Switzerland.

But dual citizenship is generally decided by circumstances of our births, so it seems a poor metric for judging loyalties.

The money buying offices seems much more imperative to scrutinize in this age where multi-national corporations are buying pols everywhere to get the legislation they want all over the world. When that is going on, and it is, there really are no national boarders or national governments. Everything is decided by $$ and most $$ doesn't hold allegiance to anything but ways to get more $$.

Were it not for Bachmanns constant ragging about 'un-American' Congressmen, I wouldn't even discuss her particular situation. Her nationalistic blather as a basis to attack colleagues makes her fair game on this one. And we must take our good clean fun where we can. ;^)

Cracks me up that an attention whore like her thought she could fly this dual citizenship thing under the radar.

She really is clueless about EVERYTHING yet thinks she is so much smarter than anyone else. Maybe someday medical science will have a vaccine for what ails her.

    • Oh no don't give up your citizenship in Switzerland, I guess we couldn't get that lucky to have her move to Switzerland forever. I bet Switzerland is very happy to hear this news. Lol!

    • Wondering if Bachmann did this just to create problems for Sec of State Clinton.

Will Switzerland get all hurt and angry that crazy congresswoman rejected them?

Will this have negative impact on international banking and trade?

      What about the chocolate!

That loud noise coming from across the Atlantic is the population of Switzerland breathing a collective sigh of relief. They need look no further than Norway to see what right wing extremists are capable of.
