Romney: Bush Kept US From Going Into Great Depression

Image
Vierotchka
Excerpt:

That’s not to say Romney completely ignores Bush, either. On the March day when he was endorsed by Jeb Bush, Romney credited the former president with averting another Depression in 2008. Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush, endorsed Romney little more than a week later.

“I keep hearing the president say that he’s responsible for keeping America from going into a Great Depression,” Romney said of Obama. “No, no, no. That was President George W. Bush and (Treasury Secretary) Hank Paulson that stepped in and kept that from happening.”

    • Let's see, Mittens and bane capital take going concerns and bleed them till they die. He wants his hands on the U.S. treasury for the same reason. He and his buddies will become even richer and the rest of us will be bled dry and the country will go belly up. They don't give a damn, they can go anywhere after the resulting crash.

    • Did Romney ever mention how we got to that point back in 2008? That is like setting your house on fire then getting credit for putting it out because you called the fire department.

No. And no outcry of overspending by the GOP at the time

"The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 (Pub.L. 110-185, 122 Stat. 613, enacted February 13, 2008) was an Act of Congress providing for several kinds of economic stimuli intended to boost the United States economy in 2008 and to avert a recession, or ameliorate economic conditions. The stimulus package was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on January 29, 2008, and in a slightly different version by the U.S. Senate on February 7, 2008. The Senate version was then approved in the House the same day.[1] It was signed into law on February 13, 2008 by President Bush with the support of both Democratic and Republican lawmakers. The law provides for tax rebates to low- and middle-income U.S. taxpayers, tax incentives to stimulate business investment, and an increase in the limits imposed on mortgages eligible for purchase by government-sponsored enterprises (e.g., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac).

The total cost of this bill was projected at $152 billion for 2008"

    • The reign of Sir Bush has devastated the people in Texas. We are a right to work state with no collective bargaining. There is little or no insurance coverage. The wreck he started has been completed by Rick Perry who threw kids off the CHIP health care plan and poor women can no longer get health care from Planned Parenthood. If Wisconsin loses the fight against Scott Walker their wages will drop. Employers will begin to drop health care programs that are affordable and they will have to work two or three jobs just to make ends meet. That is what it is like in a right-to-work state.Just ask teachers, firefighters and policeman.

As a Native Texan --fifth generation --I agree with you completely. Bush/Perry was an utter disaster for Texas. Education might have been the first and most obvious casualty. The GOP waged war on public education and won. It was a FASCIST scam. As high school graduations dropped the crime rate increased. Bush was still stinking up the Gov's mansion when Dallas was called a 'murder capital'. The GOP did not care, in fact, they celebrated! The corporate-owned (euphemistically called 'privatized') prisons made out like BANDITS! To sum up: the GOP is NOT a political party; it's a fascist crime syndicate.

    • The election time bullshit is not a surprise.

What IS a surprise is that they're looking to *Bush* for endorsements. What's up with that?

I smell a right-wing revisionism bubbling up. Will they enshrine Bush as they did Reagan?

    • Does anyone really believe they believe their own lie? Repetition, repetition is what they're counting on. Tell the same lie over and over again someone will believe it. See this work for them a long, long, time ago but it won't work this time.
As they say on Seinfeld, "It's not a lie if you believe it".

He can depend on the Conservative pundits/politicians to spin his lies. They are united in their lies/propaganda. Clouding the issues is part of their strategy. Mitt Romney knows that he can get away with being dishonest with his supporters. Their only goal is to defeat President Obama.

    • Romney is a pitiful sort of man... He lies with a straight face and becomes upset when he is called out for them... he has an ugly temper and can't seem to get past someone questioning him... He will be a terrible president for this country, and I think we should insure he follows his dad's outcome....

    • He is comfortable lying. A little too comfortable for my taste! Liars should not be President of The United States of America.

If his words can't be trusted as a candidate, how can they be trusted as President? Trust is earned. So is shame. IMHO he has earned a world of shame for that claim!

Bush kept us from going into Great Depression? Don't make me laugh. Just saying it and moving along is just wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong!

Facts matter! The truth matters more!

'He knows'! He knows it's a lie! He knows there is no 'real' accountability when he lies! He is judged in 'the court of public opinion', then we move along as though a lie is not wrong.

How do we move along? We are moved along by our media. One news cycle at a time. Something new to judge in 'the court of public opinion'. No accountability. No shame. No justice.

Honesty is not a requirement, in 'the court of public opinion'. The truth and nothing but the truth has been replaced, with divisive campaigning. Every truth is fair game in American elections. Opinion and facts which lead to truth are treated as equal.

What a shame. As long as people are allowed to lie, nothing will ever be the same. We are turning into a country of shame. Honesty should be a requirement, not just an option.

Romney would be wise to stop using Bush in his conversation. Bush has history. Facts matter. The truth matters more. Romney is being dishonest and 'He knows' it.

    • Yes, he saved us from a depression by leaving office and ending the eight years of spending off the books and allowing his successor to end his wars. Romney's statement is like saying the mugger saved your life because he quit beating you when his stick broke.
I'll bet even Romney's constituency is embarrassed by this dumb-ass, desperate claim

    • I guess the fact that under Obama we again have a budget surplus doesn't mean anything to republicans. If we elect another republican, that surplus will disappear just as quickly as it did under Bush. Just keeping a running tally on this administrations accomplishments one may find, lower unemployment, a budget surplus, and lower taxes among other things. There should be some awkward presidential debates over the next six months. There is nothing for republicans to stand on in terms of bashing Obamas policy. We'll see what happens in November.

Well that's certainly one way to look at it. While Obama's policy on immigration has been oppressive to say the least, the economy is showing signs of improvement. The lesser of two poisons will still kill you. I understand your pessimism but I look to the future and remain optimistic for the sake of my children. The fact that the government is finding their way back into the black, leads me to hope that our economy will rise out of the red.

    • How in the blue hell are you going to avoid a Depression WHEN YOU INHERITED A SURPLUS FROM THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION??

I'm typically pretty civil and understanding when it comes to political views, but anyone that would consider this clown for President is a got damn fool. He is so obviously and ridiculously incompetent. The fact people actual defend him illustrates the irrational hate surrounding B.Ob.

    • Bushes 2008 Stimulus gave people a few extra hundred to pocket or enough to put toward bills.

The 2009 Obama Stimulus saved the American Auto Industry, created jobs, saved our financial institutions from collapse, and created jobs in energy and infrastructure.

....yeah, I can see how Bush's stimulus was more effective. [not]

The stimulus invested a bunch of money into alternative energy companies. People seeking to build wind farms or set up solar panels, stuff like that.

It was a small part of the program and whether or not it was successful is a matter of some controversy.

Of course they have. I personally know people in the alternative power industry and they were/ hiring when no one else was. Perhaps what you intended to say is that the jobs didn't materialize immediately on the scale you believed they would. One thing to keep in mind is that alternative energy is an infant industry. Like any other technology, it will develop over time. For example, the (world) auto industry didn't start at the top. It took decades of improvements and advances in technology to get them to where they are now. The same will happen with alternative energy. I truly hope this is the case because it's the only option for real growth and improvement for the middle class that this country has.

Mitt is a political chameleon. He will color himself any shade necessary to rally the intellectually challenged that make up what is left of the GOP. Also, many people often forget that the president can promise the world, but congress can, and often does limit his options.

I've noticed that it usually takes at least two years to gather all the data and another two to run all the equations and generate the charts. Of course, the GOP benefits from this. The GOP crooks will have cut n' run in the meantime.

During the panic of '08, the overwhelming majority of Americans rejected Bush's bailout plan. It was rejected in the House the first time, where the the Senate (with the blessings of both Presidential candidates McCain and Obama) passed their own bailout bill. It went back to the House, where Paulson pleaded with Speaker Pelosi to pass this POS (and where certain members were threatened with all kinds of horrendous scenarios as shown above). The House passed TARP and Bush rubber stamped it.

They got bailed out. We got sold out.
