BREAKING" Obama To Stop Deporting DREAM-Eligible Youth, Protecting 1 Million Undocumented Students

President Obama will announce a new immigration policy this morning that will allow some undocumented students to avoid deportation and receive work authorization.

Under the “deferred action” policy, a Department of Homeland Security directive, students in the U.S. who are already in deportation proceedings or those who qualify for the DREAM Act and have yet to come forward to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials, will not be deported and will be allowed to work in the United States.

An estimated 1 million young people could benefit from the deferral. To be eligible, applicants have to be between 15 and 30 years old, live in the U.S. for five years, and maintain continuous U.S. residency. People who have one felony, one serious misdemeanor, or three minor misdemeanors will be ineligible to apply. “Deferred action” will last for two years and can be renewed.

Obama is expected to speak about this new policy later today.

Republicans blocked the DREAM Act in 2010, and this year, House Judiciary Committee Chair Lamar Smith (R-TX) has already said he would not hold a hearing on the DREAM Act in his committee.

Obama’s announcement will create a smart policy to help protect young adults at risk of deportation who have spent years establishing their homes in the United States while boosting the U.S. economy.

    • We need to get our legislators moving to begin impeachment proceedings against this tyrant. He ignores the laws he wants to ignore and implements law based on his desired policy, congress and the Constitution be damned.

    • Is it just me or does Obama seem to be handing out Christmas Candy to all the groups that have stopped buying his BS? I mean he has EVOLVED to the position Ron Paul has held for 40 years on Gay marriage to appease the Gay community. Now he has stopped deporting illegal aleian children to shore up his Latino vote, now all he has to do is come out in favor of Midget Porn to shore up the Fetish vote.

Does this change the fact that he indeed is stopping the deportation of DREAM-Eligible youth? As far as I'm concerned whether it's election season pandering or not, if he does it, great.

The President doesn't only represent liberals; I find he's more or less trying to be a centrist to pull this increasing partisanship polarity together again.

Do not get me wrong I am in 100% favor of this move. I Just hope the Latino people are not stupid enough to take the election year trick and think that Obama is all of a sudden concerned with their plight.

Obama is going to PANDER to every group he can just to get reelected, so he can go about the 1% business as usual. Cornel West & Tavis Smiley have Obama's number

    • Just an aside, I was under the impression that the Congress made the laws not the president or is this another example of "flexibility" or going around Congress because they will not do what Barry wants.

    • Interestingly, Sen. Marco Rubio (REPUBLICAN), had proposed a very similar plan. His plan put more of an emphasis on kids having to go to college or the military, but otherwise, very similar.

Apparently there are a few theories that claim to account for the reasons for this change in policy. Some claim that a lot of Occupy protests that have been going on had an effect on it.

      http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/06/15/1100336/-POWER-OF-PROTEST-Occupations-o...

"For the last week, undocumented activists have been staging occupations at Obama campaign offices in Colorado, Michigan and California, refusing to leave until the administration ceased its deportation of students.

This pressure -- and the threat of the occupations spreading to other states -- has played a huge role in forcing the administration's hand, and is likely responsible for the timing of Obama's executive order to halt deportations of Dream-eligible youth.

Occupations work. Direct protesting works. Popular resistance has power."

They also claim that it also includes some other explainations that have been expressed in the comments here.

"Even if electoral politics was sole reason for this decision, think about how amazing that alone is, and the progress on this issue we've made such that supporting DREAMers and immigrant youth could be seen as helpful politically. Meaning: if the cynical view of Obama is that he only picks the winning team (or tries to), look who's winning."

When people dismissed his endorsement of same-sex marriage: who'd have thunk even five years ago that supporting same-sex marriage would be considered politically advantageous! If this is electoral cynicism, please, can we have some more of that? I have a whole list of issue I want him to be more cynical about, heh."

So if it it was only politically motivated to get Obama elected then does he think those demographics are influential enough to get the amounts of voted needed?

What about other demographics that Stephen Colbert pointed out? Legalization of Marjuana is a "hot button issue" with a lot of people (especially with those on Current from the amount of posts on the subject)

If Obama was picking out those demographics to make himself appear in a favorable light, wouldn't he make similar efforts to them as well? Or is that as Colbert mentioned that they are the demo least likely to actually get out and vote in a timely manner?

    • Leen61:

There seem to be degrees of purity and how postive it is depending on circumstances. The most postive would be if the power of voice of the people was being considered by the administration for purely democratic reasons.

To a lesser degree "Because the demonstrators were themselves undocumented immigrants, an administration decision to remove and arrest them would have subjected them to possible deportation, making the decision of how to handle the protests a delicate one. With today’s announcement, that decision goes away, as does the possibility that the occupations could spread to more politically problematic states — Florida, say, or Arizona, or the campaign’s national headquarters in Illinois." that at least takes into account some compassion for their situation of staying but also adds the element of CYA and keeping a lid on dissent.

At the very least it's good PR to contrast the harsh and selfish stances of the opposition, so yes I agree, most of the results are positive

    • Ok, so if he did this without congress, why can't he create more jobs without congress? I'm not against Obama per se, I'm just seriously confused as to why he can do 'some' things without congressional votes, but when it comes to helping others in this country it has to go thru congress. I'm serious about this --- any one of the posters on here -- please explain to me why some things get done, and others don't .... Another vote for Obama is at stake here -- if you want ME -- an avowed progressive LEFTY -- to vote for Obama you need to tell me why he got this done without congress, but no more jobs can be created for current American citizens without congressional approval.

The president has not created jobs for these young people. He has,if they qualify given them a work permit for two years to be able to look for work without the worry of being deported. It does not guarantee they will find work.
For the president to create jobs he needs congress. Just remember congress holds the purse strings. Creating jobs costs money such as his "Job's Bill" that would have created jobs for millions. He planned on paying for it by adding taxes on the wealthy. The Republicans voted it down. Many of these young people may not find jobs but they can not be deported for trying. I hope this answers your question without asking you to vote for Obama.

Thnx S -- I was serious in my comment, I just wanted to know how he could do this without congress. And altho' I wasn't thinking about these immigrants having jobs you did explain it in such a way as to make it possible for me to better understand the connection between us having jobs and the part congress plays in that.

    • Outstanding news. A better and more easily traversed path to citizenship and education for these individuals is a must. Let's stop treating symptoms of a larger issue and take advantage of the opportunity.

Many people forget that this was a nation founded by immigrants and then further strengthened through the era of industrialization by Irish, Germans, and Eastern European immigrants, etc., then supported in the agriculture, rail, and industry sectors during WWII by Mexicans with the Bracero Program.

    • I think this is great. Many young people were brought here as babies or children - they did not make the choice to enter this country illegally. If they want to get an education and contribute to society, I am all for letting them live here. We are a nation founded by immigrants. Did the pilgrims have papers? Yeah, didn't think so.

Also, lololol at all the "Obama is just doing this for votes hurrrr" from the right-wingers. Apparently, Obama is a do-nothing president, except for when he does things, which is only for votes. Tell me again how we're supposed to make progress in this country if you punish the prez for doing things and for NOT doing things? Oh, right, conservatives don't want us to make progress.

They aren't "foreign nationals," many grew up here in the United States. We're not giving these undocumented students any extra aid or advantages, we're just agreeing to not deport them. How does that threaten anyone's ability to afford college?

It would be nice to be able to call people what they are, however, pointing out the fact that someone is a racist is considered to be a personal attack, and such comments are removed.
