40,000 Utah Families to Get Health Insurance Rebates After Supreme Court Ruling.

Republican Senator From Utah Not Very Happy With It Either.

Thursday, the US Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Obamacare be upheld, and for 40,000 Utah residents this means that they will receive rebates from their insurance company in August.

The Supreme Court ruled that the requirement to have insurance is a tax, and it is constitutional. By 2014, those who do not have the required health insurance will be taxed.

Senator Hatch from Utah was present at the ruling and CNN reported that Hatch rolled his head and eyes back as the ruling was announced and his face fell in disappointment.

26 states (Utah was one of those states) requested that the Supreme Court overturn Obamacare on the grounds that the federal government should not interfere with individual states authority. But the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the law.

The Department of Health and Human Services was tasked with following the various parts of Obamacare and they stated that the rebates would be due to consumers by August 1 and approximately 12.8 million individuals and employers would receive the rebates. And average of $152 would be issued to each family, but in 10 state states that amount may exceed $500.

About 1.5 million Texans will receive nearly $167 million in health insurance rebates, an average of $187 each, by Aug. 1 from insurance companies.

Texas is receiving the highest total amount in rebates in the nation, roughly 15 percent of the total. The state has about 8 percent of the nation's population, according to U.S. Census estimates.

Under the federal law, insurers must spend at least 80 percent of premium revenues on medical costs or quality improvements; the remainder can go toward administrative costs, sales commissions and profits. If companies set premiums too high, rebates in the form of checks or discounts off future premiums are due consumers and businesses by Aug. 1.

Nationally, an estimated 3.4 million people who bought their own coverage are projected to receive rebates this year from 215 insurance plans, according to the study. The biggest dollar amounts are expected to go to consumers in Alaska, where per person rebates are expected to average $305, Maryland, $294, Pennsylvania, $243 and Idaho, $241. Insurers hit the spending targets for policies sold directly to consumers in several states, including Hawaii, Maine and the District of Columbia, so no rebates are expected for individual consumers there.

    • So Big Insurance is gonna be forced to put some $$ back into the hands of a lot of Americans? In other words, Big Insurance has to pop for a little round of STIMULUS?

I suspect that had a lot to do with why the Republicans wanted the law struck down before those rebate checks went out. The thought of Americans having 1.2 billion dollars of purchasing power must have made them sick. I would think the idea of corporations not being able to keep money that actually belonged to the American people would not sit well with the fascist Republicans either.

    • This is the only reason Republicans were trying to get their own idea declared unconstitutional. Not because they believed it was unconstitutional, it was their idea. It was because the thought of millions of Americans getting money back from the corporations that overcharged them for health care made them nauseated.

The hatred that the Republicans have for Americans is more than evident in their attempt to make sure that Americans were not treated fairly, and in their attempt to protect corporate profits.

The only chance you have to save your country is to get rid of right wing thinking. It does not matter which party you have in power, if they do things that conservatives like it will be disastrous for your country.

Another reason they are upset about the rebate is that it is coming as a result of Obama and just before the election to remind people about the benefits of the Health Care Act. I'm beginning believe that half the country is crazy and the other half is ignorant. And to those that claim they are going to move to Canada if this goes through don't seem to understand that we pay for our health care through our taxes (mandated) and it doesn't hurt. They obviously don't understand about the economy of scale. That is why 'medicare for all' would be the most effective health care system for the States, the program is already in place and people already contribute to it through their payroll tax. They would just have to adjust the rates which would still be cheaper then paying separately for both medicare and health insurance.

    • Isn't it ironic that the state that will receive the most in rebates under "Obama Care" is Texas. "Texas gets the most of any state: $167 million. The rebate to the individual market customer, the person who buys a policy directly from an insurance company is $356, double the national average."(K.E.R.A. News Texas)

I suspect all the good Republicans in Texas are going to refuse to cash those rebate checks in protest of "The Affordable Care Act." Or maybe they will say they are all for "The Affordable Care Act", it's "Obama Care" as described by the Republicans they are against. And since Republicans do nothing but lie to Americans with every breathe they take, some confusion is to be expected.

    • Senator Hatch of Utah shows his true conservative colors. The people he is supposed to be representing are getting a rebate check back from the corporations they gave too much money to. Like a true Republican he did not like this idea one bit. The people Republicans actually work for, the corporations, are not going to be allowed to rob the American public any more for their health care dollars, and this goes against everything American Conservatism stands for.
