News International sent out an email on Saturday informing staffers that Rupert Murdoch has resigned as director of News International a string of other companies connected with the company's London-based newspaper holdings. The news first broke when Times of London staffer Nico Hines tweeted that Murdoch resigned. According to Hines, the email says Murdoch's resignation is "part of the preparation of the business for the upcoming restructure into two companies." Filings show Murdoch stepped down as the head of News International, Times Newspaper Holdings and News Corp Investments, as well as a number of other boards across the U.K., U.S. and India last week. Murdoch is still the chairman of News Corporation. He merely relinquished control of the publishing side of the company operations, which is a surprise considering they've long been his baby. When News. Corp. announced the split into two separate companies the way they painted the future of the publishing side wasn't pretty, but Murdoch's always fancied himself a newspaper man. To watch him give up control of his British papers comes as a surprise, even though they've been nothing but a headache for Murdoch over the last year.
A News Corp. representative told the Telegraph the move was, "nothing more than a corporate housecleaning exercise prior to the company split," but other News Corp. sources say executives have speculated the Murdochs "could sell down their stake in the publishing division altogether and use the equity to help fund a leveraged buyout of the film and entertainment division."
But analyst Claire Enders told the Telegraph the move is connected to James Murdoch's News International resignation and signaled the two are on their way out of Britain for good. She called it the "slow fade of Rupert and James from the UK," and described it as a "permanent shift."
“James and Rupert have decided that they are not welcome in the UK, and they’re right. there is an enforced emotional withdrawal from these assets because they are no longer useful [in terms of influence]," she said.
According to the email sent to Times staff, Murdoch is "fully committed to our business as chairman of what will become the largest newspaper... group in the world."

Two Ex-Editors for Murdoch Charged in Hacking Scandal
After a year of furious controversy over the widespread phone hacking by one of Rupert Murdoch’s tabloid newspapers, British prosecutors brought criminal charges on Tuesday against eight of the most prominent figures in the scandal, including Andy Coulson, who was Prime Minister David Cameron’s communications chief at 10 Downing Street until the scandal forced his resignation last year. Also charged was Rebekah Brooks, the chief executive of Mr. Murdoch’s newspaper empire in Britain until she, too, resigned last summer. Others who were indicted include five journalists who played prominent roles at The News of the World, the tabloid where Ms. Brooks and later Mr. Coulson were the top editors at the time that the hacking is alleged to have occurred, from 2000 to 2006.

"MURDOCH ABSCOND UK TO AVOID PENDING CRIMINAL INDICTMENTS" would have been a more precise headline for this article.
And as someone who long ago successfully predicted (guessed) this and other Murdoch maneuvers, (see my comment and stories on Murdoch on CURRENT) I'll take another shot at clairvoyance: Rupert Murdoch and his son James will face multiple criminal indictment in Great Britain before the end of the year.

Yes, but perhaps they will now concentrate their efforts elsewhere. It seems their little power ploy didn't work (or only worked for a while) in the UK...
TheGuardian reports:
Media analyst Claire Enders said Murdoch's resignations were part of the "controlled fade of Rupert and James from the UK" that began last year in order to take a "psychological step back" from embarrassments such as the recent phone hacking scandal.
"It's the big farewell, it's time to move on. They are leaving the country and they won't be back. It is quite a historic moment," she said. "This follows on from comments Murdoch made a few weeks ago when he remarked on the unfriendliness of the UK, but it's something that is part of the long-term strategy.http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/jul/21/rupert-murdoch-director-news-interna...

In my opinion it's not a matter of competition or for seeking attention, but to post something that "may" be of interest to "some" members of the Current Community.
Again, I do appreciate your taking the time to come by and post your comment. There are certain posts I read, including topics on the environment but do not comment. I still appreciate the information that I get and the people who take the time to make that information available.

Well, someone as powerful in the world of media as Rupert Murdoch, with all the political manoeuvring and influence his media power allows him, is certainly instrumental in shaping public opinion -- including the opinion of those who think this is of no importance (it is). So it will be interesting to see where things go from here.

Agreed (and voted up). I am as guilty as anyone of dismissing Rupe and the gang of cretins at FOX NEWS as circus clowns: momentarily amusing but ultimately minor actors in the Big Show.
I tend to forget (be in denial?) about the fact that there are millions of people who watch that program for hours at a time and avidly sound out the words in Rupe's publications. This constant bombardment on the especially soft tissues in the crania of his supporters is literally molding (moulding?) their minds (or the closest approximations to minds that such viewers can be said to possess).
I mean, these people often VOTE. Worse, they REPRODUCE! Menaces to society? -- oh yes, I think so.

Nope. Not as long as he's breathing. Dropping back to chairman doesn't hurt nearly as much as it appears to the public and, no doubt, Carey knows who to take advice from. This is all part of the UK/NOTW phone hacking scandal that directly involves PM Cameron. This makes it look like Murdoch is getting justice. He should be in jail, and Cameron run out on a rail.
