Gardening in Hell! (VIDEO)

The garden is also being used by a nearby school to incorporate agriculture and healthy eating into the curriculum. If gardening can be successful in the sweltering and dusty environment of Las Vegas, there is hope for increased home and community gardening anywhere.

    • Seems like the majority of Americans could garden if they chose to do so. You read a lot about eating fresh food sans chemicals; which is cool - but there's far more to it than that. You don't have to be a health nut to find the appeal.

Gardening is work - make no mistake about that. Turning lawn into a garden can be a chore. But roto-tillers cut the labor way down and these can be rented if need be.

Pride and satisfaction come with gardening - and flavor. Please bear in mind that supermarket veggies were picked before they were ripe - to withstand the transport and appear ready to eat in the market. But when you pick something - be it fruit or veggie, before it's ripe, the flavor isn't there and never will be. Peas from the garden are SWEET - not bitter. I grew Silver Queen corn one year and made the mistake of putting a pinch of sugar in the water. It was so sweet I couldn't eat it. Vine ripe cantaloupes and watermelon provide tastes you can't find in any market - save possibly your local farmers market. Tomatoes - same deal. Ever eaten a tree ripe peach? Fresh asparagus doesn't have hard stems you throw away. The list goes on & on & on.

You till your soil, plant the seeds, keep the weeds out, and then enjoy an early morning walk through the garden - coffee in hand. There's nothing like it.

Poor soil? Unfriendly climate? Most can be overcome easily. Raised beds, as in this article, are excellent - not to mention decorative. Don't care for the cinder block by the way, give me wood every time. Recycling kitchen waste to the soil guarantees a better crop next year and cuts down on land-fill operations.

Did you know there are generations of Americans that don't know what milk tastes like? Plastic imparts a flavor - and not a good one. You can put a pat of margarine on your windowsill and the flies won't touch it. Did you know that the egg you eat - if the chicken was fed right - has a yellow that's actually orange - as opposed to tasteless runny yellow? The list goes on.
