Senator Bernie Sanders, Speaks for the 1%..Can you hear America now?

Senate Panel Holds Hearing on Sanders’ Saving American Democracy Amendment

WASHINGTON, July 24 - Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told a Senate panel today that a constitutional amendment is needed to undo the Supreme Court ruling that let corporations and wealthy individuals spend unlimited sums to sway American elections.
Vermont and five other states have adopted resolutions asking Congress for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision.

More than 200 local governments, including about 60 towns in Vermont, have passed similar measures.

Sanders revealed for the first time that at least 23 billionaire families have contributed a minimum of $250,000 each so far in this year's campaigns. "My guess is that number is really much greater because many of these contributions are made in secret. In other words, not content to own our economy, the 1 percent want to own our government as well," he said his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights.

Sanders said a handful of billionaires own a significant part of the wealth of America and have enormous control over our economy. The wealthiest 400 individuals own more wealth than the bottom 150 million Americans - half the country. One family, the Walton family of Wal-Mart fame, is worth $89 billion, more than the bottom 40 percent of America.

"What the Supreme Court did in Citizens United is to say to these same billionaires and the corporations they control: ‘You own and control the economy, you own Wall Street, you own the coal companies, you own the oil companies. Now, for a very small percentage of your wealth, we're going to give you the opportunity to own the United States government.'

"That is the essence of what Citizens United is all about - and that's why it must be overturned," said Sanders, the sponsor of the Saving American Democracy Amendment.
A companion measure in the House is sponsored by Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.)

The amendment would say that for-profit corporations are not people, that they are not entitled to any rights under the Constitution, that they are subject to regulation by state legislatures consistent with free press protections, and that they are prohibited from making contributions or expenditures in political campaigns. The amendment also would declare that Congress and the states have the right to regulate and limit all political expenditures and contributions.

"I'm proud to say the American people are making their voices heard on this issue-they are telling us loud and clear it is time to reverse the trend," Sanders said.

    • Back to what Sanders was saying - yes, we need a Constitutional amendment to revoke the rediculous idea that a Corporation is an individual. And further more the amendment must make perfectly clear that a corporation has no rights at all to influence elections. It is a government by the PEOPLE - those that have a spine and brain and that breath.

    • Corporations are not people.
Unlimited cash from any source in elections perverts the election process.

Too bad the maroons that believe the attack ads and decide their vote in the last week from the ads vote.

    • Bravatravels, Language is all that we have to communicate. Without it we've got grunts and slaps. I suggest to you - the words you use are extremely important. That is, if you want to be listened to with any semblance of respect or interest. Otherwise, it is a rant which mostly will be ignored. So, I only suggest the language clean-up to help you avoid disregard such language naturally promulgates. My intent was to be helpful.

I truly appreciate your concern...thank you so much.

I believe language should be free even if someone feels offended by it....

I can speak in many different ways....

Today I choose to curse Mitt Romney and call him what he is an A$$h0le :D

Freedom of speech is for everyone including the 99%

While you are talking about me cursing the pig, how about the ones that use language to deceive and lie to the public...That is the language that we should be watching for... Still thanks :D

If the 1% were polite , i would agree with you . Let us drop the false pretense , they have destroyed lives , families , started wars against countless innocents . For the sake of honest self expression , justice and truth , let people speak . Poverty is a most violent thing , and you want people to be polite ? In theory , most of the time , i agree , however an accurate descriptive phrase is never out of place . A Psychopathic lowlife Parasite on the scrotum of the world , needs to be pointed out . Politeness does have a place . The truth is not always it .

    • Bravatravels - you need to clean up you language. Yes, it amazes that this person is running for president. And he is less than brilliant in so many ways. Should he win, I might have to leave this country out of complete remorse for the loss of the republic. For certainly, if this man does even half of what he proclaims, an oligarchy will prevail. Look for loaded drones over head in 2013.

    • How come we only hear this from Mr. Sanders? Every single member of Congress should be screaming bloody murder to place this Amendment into the Constitution. But the reality is they won't because they are receiving campaign contributions from the 1%.

The Citizens United decision was pushed through by 5 activist conservative judges with an agenda bought and paid for by the 1% that disregarded the concerns and needs of the remaining 99%. These judges apparently have little understanding of human nature or knowledge of history. Specifically there comes a point when the unwashed masses decide they've had enough and revolt. We've already had two revolutions in this country, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. There's nothing that guarantees we won't have a third.

That seems that would be nice but as he said he could not afford running. Congress is where laws are made for all the people. I want more of him in the senate. I do like my two senators but by my count we only have 13 good ones.
