Akin, a six-term House member, apologized Monday in an interview on former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee's radio show, saying that "rape is never legitimate. It is an evil act. I used the wrong words in the wrong way."He told Huckabee he was not dropping out. Akin repeated that assertion later Monday in a Twitter message to his followers and again during a televised interview with Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity.
News from On Politics
On Politics
Akin faced almost universal condemnation from fellow Republicans. Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Scott Brown of Massachusetts, who is in a tough re-election fight, both said Akin should drop out.
"I'm seeing things here that I have never seen before," said Jennifer Duffy, an election analyst for the non-partisan Cook Political Report, of the intra-party effort to get Akin out of the race. Akin's name on the ballot could be McCaskill's surest bet for re-election, Duffy said.

Legitimate rape - Only a rapist like Todd Akin would know.
Its high time women decided laws concerning their bodies - not the so-called religious care takers and definitely not men.

Fortunately he has No chance of winning now.
Unfortunately he still has time to resign without costing the party much money and a court fight and the establishment wants him gone Now so they can easily replace him. I hope he ignores the establishment and sticks it out but I don't think he will. :(
Hopefully more people will see that he is just the one TeaPublican that let it slip out just how Stupid they think their supporters are. - 9 months ago

Apparently he's too stubborn to quit the race and thinks an apology will make up for it thus further dragging the GOP down with him
"Rep. Todd Akin renewed his vow to carry on with his embattled Senate campaign Tuesday. Akin, who has been frantically trying to salvage his once-promising bid against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill, insisted the uproar surrounding his remarks was an overreaction to misspeaking "one word in one sentence on one day."
"I guess my question is: Is there a matter of some justice here?" Akin asked. After his original statement, "all of a sudden, overnight, everybody decides, `Well, Akin can't possibly win.' Well, I don't agree with that."

As they say wouldn't it be a better idea to "Regulate Banks, not Vagina's" for public good? Especially when it's not the ones with the vaginas trying to do it.
Unfortunately it's the males trying to impose them onto the females, and the women say a lot differently.

"For that is what the Republicans and the far right religious want to do, own us. They want to control our bodies, our choices, the very shape of our lives. That is the hard truth all their fear driven, arrogant, self righteousness on behalf of supposed "babies" comes down to. Ownership of women.
We will not go back to what our fore mothers endured for so long. We won't go back to the long, dark, days of bearing children we could not feed. We will not go back to the horror of knowing another pregnancy would kill us and having no choice but illness and death.
We will not go back. We will not be silent. We will not sacrifice our dignity, our worth, our freedom, our children on the Republican altar of fear and hate.
We will not be owned."

It also would for me, hopefully she'll be ready by 2016 to run, since we need her expertise critically to be able to push more for the CFPB because it is making a start and needs to grow into something to stem the tide of corruption.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/07/23/1112830/-Tricks-Traps-and-Accountabilit...
"Now, one year later, the CFPB is already moving toward clearer prices and risks so consumers have the information to make good choices -- with a new student financial aid shopping sheet, the prototype of a shorter credit card agreement, and rapid progress toward a new, simpler mortgage disclosure form.
The CFPB is also already helping military servicemembers better navigate the financial challenges of multiple moves and deployments and passing on targeted information to protect seniors, students, and young families about their financial options. For those who have had disputes with lenders, the CFPB’s Consumer Response Center is helping to get those problems solved. The agency has hired examiners to supervise the largest banks for compliance with the law and established procedures for overseeing previously unregulated mortgage servicers and payday lenders.
And just last week, the CFPB announced that its first public enforcement action will require Capital One to refund two million consumers a total of $140 million, in addition to paying a $25 million penalty, as a result of the company’s deceptive and misleading practices on credit cards.
Progress is unmistakable, but the fight over CFPB’s existence continues. The big banks, their lobbyists, their friends in Congress, and even Mitt Romney have pushed for repeal of the new agency. Despite the pressure, the new agency stays focused on its mission, helping make sure that everyone -- no matter how big -- has to follow the same rules.
A working market needs rules, and the CFPB is starting to level the playing field. That’s a good thing for consumers -- and it didn’t come a moment too soon."

And every Republican in the House voted in favor of 'redefining' rape. So, yeah, they are all on record about the issue. They all voted for a narrow definition of rape, so they all voted for the idea that there is legitimate rape and illegitimate rape.
They just don't want us focusing on the whole issue. Akin will be their whipping boy unless we make enough noise about the GOP vote to redefine. They all want to limit the resources women have access to but limiting the conditions women have to meet to use resources.

Akin, along with every other GOP member of the HOUSE voted to 'redefine rape'. In the measure of 'bad things' that ranks up there higher than any attempt to make health care more accessible to more people. Sure, not as high up in the 'bad thing' tally as, oh say voting for the invasion of Iraq because it was comfy to believe bush/cheney lies, but if we are gonna play 'yeah, but so and so did this and that' Akin can sit on his sponsorship of and vote for a measure that attempted to lessen the resources available to women who get raped, he can sit on it and spin.
Frankly, I hope he gets some donors coming in that encourage him to stay in the race. The GOP in the House need to face a serious discussion about their attempts to redefine rape. And that is at least a little on topic in this thread. We are not talking the ACA here, but anytime some GOP pol steps in a pile, we know somebody will try to use ACA as a diversion.

You're missing the whole point. The idiotic statement points to a much larger problem in 'thuglican party:
That there are different classes of rape. Forcible and non-forcible. Rape, by definition, is a sex act performed on a non-willing participant. Rape is _always_ forced. The whole idea that you can subdivide rape into classes is the _real_ idiocy, and that idiocy leads to idiots like Akin making statements like he did ("...legitimate rape..."). And that kind if idiocy leads to the legislation that Akin and Paul Ryan support in regards to "forcible rape". Stupid
When I hear stories about rape, I don't ask myself if it was forced or not. The thought would never occur to me, but apparently there are those that do. And unfortunately, these idiots are making legislation based on this idiocy. The rethuglican party is driven by a bunch of wackos that would not have seen the light of day just 10 years ago, and we will all be laughing at 10 years from now.
'nuf sedJust in case you were thinking Akin views were truly abhorrent to the 'thuglican party, here's another one. This one is a woman, so I suppose it really is a big tent...of idiots:

Of course, too many people are "single-issue" voters. For example, so long as a party is anti-women's choice when it comes to abortion, they couldn't care less about the other planks in that party's platform. Same for the idiots whose single greatest fear is that the government is interested in abolishing the Second Amendment right to bear arms as well as those who care only about tax reduction (but are too stupid to realize that all of the reduction goes to the already wealthy at the expense of the middle class).

To this end, we really need to define a common platform that we can _all_ agree on, irrespective of party. Wedge issues are used to separate us, but there is a _lot_ of commonality among us. Citizens United comes to mind right away. Depending on the polls, anywhere between 65-75% of Americans want that overturned. If we back candidates that support that common platform, we can still have our wedge issues. Is overturning or supporting Roe v. Wade inconsistent with overturning CU? Of course not. Besides, these wedge issues aren't going anywhere, even if one side wins victories here and there. We just keep beating each other up over them.
As a reference folks watch the Star Trek (TOS) season 3 episode "Day of the Dove" and then ask yourself is the problem really with the other side?

In the end, it is going to be about Democratic voter apathy. If we can get them to the polls, we can win. I haven't seen any public figures of stature really lay out the risks - especially with respect to the Supreme Court - if Romney-Ryan are elected. We could easily lose two liberal justices in the next four years. Roe v. Wade would actually be in play. I could see loyalty oaths upheld. I could see the erosion of the rights to freedom of speech and the rights to be free from unreasonable and unlawful search and seizure. How ironic that the most likely path to a Police State would be via Republican control of the government over the next four years.
