Ron Paul declines a speaking spot at GOP convention after Romney demands to review remarks

The libertarian Republican presidential candidate says he’s declined an opportunity to speak at the Republican National Convention in Tampa because Mitt Romney’s campaign imposed two conditions on any Paul speech — that it be reviewed by the nominee-to-be’s team and that it include an endorsement without hesitation or reservation.

“It wouldn’t be my speech,” the Texas congressman told the New York Times. “That would undo everything I’ve done in the last 30 years. I don’t fully endorse him for president.”

Pundits noted that the uncompromising attitude that has won Paul a national following also limits his clout within the GOP.

“Uncompromising and perfectly willing to operate on the margins of mainstream politics for decades, Ron Paul proved unable to take his liberty message to a broader audience,” Charlie Mahtesian wrote today in Politico. “Even this year, at the height of his national influence and popularity, the Texas congressman failed to win the popular vote in a single state and never seriously threatened to win the GOP nomination.”

But inside the University of South Florida’s Sun Dome, where Paul is holding a celebration of his candidacy today, supporters say Paul’s unyielding principles are why they love him. Jordan Page, a singer who has penned several ballads about the Texas congressman, called Paul “the one sane voice in a sea of madness.”

Former California congressman Barry Goldwater Jr. conceded that the movement embodied by his father in 1964 and by Ron Paul this year “has had a bumpy road.”

    • Fuck the RNC ! We all know by now it's a patheticly scripted TV infomercial
summoned to further the interests of the multi Billionaire Koch bros. If you
look realy closely you can see their puppet stings working Ryan's mouth
because Ryan is their bought and paid for marionette, As Romney is
a cheap knockoff of Reagan chosen because his frame reminds people
of the Big 80s. Both these monkeys are pirates, and the worst form of
flim flam con artists. If the sheeple don't know by now it's a make believe
charade substituting for the reality Lincoln and Roosevelt faced w/o TV
Show Biz contrivances then they're hopelessly foolish. As Stalin once said
It's not the votes that count, it's who counts the votes. It's already been
posted here on this website who owns the Diebold voting machines, and
what they're connected to. I swear, sometimes I just want to pop one of
these prancing potato heads long enough to wake them from their insanity.

    • I'm not a republican and I don't like Gov. LePage's energy policy but I do applaud him for boycotting the Republican National Convention. I think everyone should boycott the Republican National Convention.

GOP committee rejects Maine delegates; LePage won’t attend national convention

"Gov. Paul LePage will not attend the Republican National Convention next week after a GOP committee Friday overwhelmingly rejected Maine’s delegates to the convention in Tampa, Fla. The ousted delegates supported Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who long ago gave up his presidential bid but who had enthusiastic followers in Maine and several other states.

Most of Maine delegates chosen at the state convention were Paul supporters. The RNC instead has chosen a slate of delegates split between the libertarian congressman and Mitt Romney. Under the compromise, 10 delegates from Maine who support Paul will be seated, along with 10 Mitt Romney supporters.

LePage’s decision not to attend the convention mirrored what he has said in the past he would do if all Maine’s delegates chosen at the state convention were not seated.

“I have decided not to attend the 2012 Republican National Convention and instead focus on state business and spending some time with family,” said LePage in the statement distributed at midday Friday. “I made it clear, when the challenge was issued, that I felt the Maine delegates selected at the Maine Convention should be seated in Tampa. It is unfortunate that not all of these delegates will be seated.”

    • Romney's shown himself to be a dictator and a tyrant already in advance
of anyone voting for this charlatan. I hope his foolish supporters pull their
heads out of their asses and wise up. Nobama is a pathetic appeaser and
stinks like a skunk too. I'm voting for Ron Paul even if it's a write in vote.
Piss on this manipulation by cheap crooks.

    • Must be tough on the Paulies, not even welcome in their own party. Even the teabaggers get to speak on hurricane day. But, never let it be said again that the repugs can't respond to a hurricane ... at least to get themselves out of harm's way. Hurricane Paul = Silenced!

    • Liberty!!!! yeah !!!
Drought, oh-oh. How much of this foolish faux "liberty" feel good stuff will survive another two years of severe drought? Multi-year droughts and potential famine have a way of focusing people on what's important and what is frivolous. The French revolution was caused mainly by famine. Russia , China, Europe all have undergone mighty political changes when drought and famine occur. Maybe that's why all those agencies are buying all those hollow point bullets.

    • Fair enough. His speech in the Sun Dome was quite awesome, so weren't some of the speeches by others there. Very controversial topics, very controversial ideas, but guess what! EVERYONE got a chance to speak, be heard, and all united under ONE idea: Liberty.

    • Ron Paul’s refusal to fall in line makes him an anomaly which is good, problem is he wants to put me back in the back of the bus and that is not going to happen. He should keep fighting for his core values whatever damages the GOP is OKAY with me.

I would suggest you examine Paul's record a little more closely. Ron Paul has been pandering to racists and white supremacists for decades. Paul opposes civil rights legislation, and believes in states rights, which is just code for bringing back Jim Crow laws, and allowing white majorities to strip minorities of basic rights.

    • they put so much effort to learn the art of dividing and trolling, now they have mastered, they became addicted to it, they can't stop, they are compulsively destroying their own camp and they became very good at it.

Those primaries destroyed the party, it's brilliant, love it, we want more!

    • Doesn't Ron Paul understand that his role in the Party is a big wad of gum to gum up functioning government? Wads of gum should be seen but not heard.
