LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles Police Department commanding officer has been removed amid an internal investigation into a videotaped beating in which officers tackled a handcuffed registered nurse to the ground, police Chief Charlie Beck said Wednesday.
Beck said previously that he had "serious concerns" about the use of force against Michelle Jordan, 34, who was arrested in the Tujunga area on Aug. 21 after being stopped for talking on a cellphone while driving, police said.
Jordan got out of the car and cursed the two officers who stopped her, witnesses and Jordan's husband told KNBC-TV.
Fast-food restaurant surveillance video obtained by the TV station (bit.ly/NVptHP ) showed officers taking her to the ground. After she is handcuffed and walked to a police car, the 5-foot-4 woman is tackled a second time by an officer who lands on top of her.
"She made some unwise moves," her attorney, Sy Nazif, told the station. "But certainly nothing that warranted a physical assault from the LAPD."
Photos show scrapes on Jordan's face, shoulders and chest.
The officers involved in the incident have been removed from patrol duty until an LAPD investigation is complete. One is a 22-year veteran and the other is a probationary officer with 10 months on the force.
Beck said at a news conference Wednesday that Capt. Joseph Hitner of the department's Foothill Division was "severely deficient in his response," Beck said.

    • You know what? I've been trying my very best to show full respect to patrol cops, but it seems there're few who seems to be straying off-line.
I was reading about it and saw the youtube video earlier. While the arrest and first tackle were already questioning, he then tackled her to the follow, again!! And!!! To piss me off …they both “bumped hands” in a form of victory. WTF?!?!

    • The tendency to over-react and show unwarranted
      punitive retaliation--even violence--against those who
have perpetrated minor offenses is not unique to the
police force. That tendency is driven by the kind of
self-righteous indignation and power needs of those
who have the ability to not only exercise, but abuse
power. In this case, who would argue for the sake of
"respect for the law" that the punishment isn't far
worse than the crime (talking on a cell phone, cursing)?

That often is the case that results in the hands of
      untrained and highly emotional power-brokers.
When you see someone tweeting, for example, that
they'd like to "punch someone in the nose" just because
they're making a speech at a political convention, start
to worry that the person in question shouldn't be allowed
any form of power over other people.

    • The Po Lice need to be reigned in. In Seattle recently the feds had to come in to stop the excessive force. The SPD is now on probation.

    • The way they try to cover for their fellow officers
reminds me of the Catholic church.

No matter how bad the actions are, people wearing the same uniform as the perpetrator will try to sweep it under the rug because it reflects badly on them.
      -----------------------------------------------------------

The police are always coming up with these catchy slogans . . .
"over the limit - under arrest"
      "click it or ticket"
They should have pictures of these pigs on billboards with the caption. .
" Act Up & Get Smacked Up "
