Thought some of us could use some good news. Yes, Virginia, there are good people, and some of them are very young."Young Hayden Sando of Kennett, MO was on his way to church when he spied an injured puppy lying helplessly by the side of the road. Others were driving by, but Hayden and his mother asked an off-duty police officer at their church to help. He contacted the Kennett Humane Dept., and the wounded Great Pyrenees was transported to KenMo Veterinary Clinic for treatment.
Said Hayden, “she looked really bad at first”, but this 14 week old pup was lucky; she had a broken leg and other very treatable issues. Hayden showed up the next day after emptying his piggy bank and offered it to help pay for the puppy’s care. He named her Slicer after the street where he found her in need of a good Samaritan.

more at link, including pictures and video of the cutest hero you'll see in a long time, and a very sweet puppy.
Everybody has the potential to be a hero. All it takes is seeing what needs to be done, and taking action. Isn't it good to know there are such good kids?

Hayden Sando actions were beneficial to a dog life. Because of his actions the dog is well and safe. He has a good heart what a wonderful person he is; boy could he teach some adults a few things, thank you for making other more aware of ways in which they can help others and for reaffirming my belief in the goodness of human nature.

Was happy to find this story and share it with you all. Good to be reminded that a lot of good happens each day. Sometimes it's too easy to lose sight of that truth. We celebrate it and it soothes us.

Breaks my heart that people could drive by such a site and not stop, thankfully these good people acted! I got teary-eyed as soon as I saw the picture, I have a Great Pyrenees myself, looked very much like him when I first saw him at the rescue, and brought him home as soon as they allowed. It is good to see there are still a few people left with souls in this seemingly increasingly soul-less sick society dominated by money with the belief of get it "all" no matter what you have to do, who you have to screw over....

Not just the boy that restores my faith, but his parents too. How many parents would not have gone over to check on the dog? How many would have, in the words of Hayden's dad, would bush off his efforts with 'it's just a dog'?
Mom and Dad restored some faith for me. See too many 'parents' who do not actually parent.

This story makes me happy... but it would have made me happier if the doctor hadn't taken his money. Kind of ridiculous to see a well-off doctor taking a kid's entire savings when he could have just performed the operation for free... isn't that the real symptom of sickness?
Just sayin' !

Most vets I have known (and there have been quite a few) really aren't that 'well-off'. They have expenses and staff to pay, and probably student loans too. I don't begrudge them their fees.

Actually you're right. I'll shift my begrudging towards the privatization of medical organizations then... or something. :)

In my town we have a vet that is very well off ( not from being a vet though) and will adjust his fees on people's ability to pay. For him the animal's welfare is the important thing. He will also not give people false hope in order to make a few extra dollars if an animal is in poor health and not expected to recover.

In my experience, most vets are more moral, caring, and better diagnosticians than most MDs I have known. And it was important to let Hayden pay what he could. He learned some valuable lessons: the fact that we have to sacrifice a bit for what we really count as important, and that he CAN make a positive change in his immediate world. For a kid, those are HUGE lessons.
