I've been beating this drum for years, but as usual, the public outcry isn't raised until after the fact. I am one of those veterans who was able to discontinue psych meds after beginning to work with a service dog. My suicidal episodes are much less acute, and fewer and farther between these days. In fact, the only thing that really triggers them anymore is this kind of constant, low-key denigration and abuse from the VA. Every time I hear of the latest way they've dreamed up to screw me and people like me, I struggle, because all joking aside, it honestly often seems that they do just want us to die.
The dogs are often the difference between life and suicide for many veterans. Sounds like the legislature wants veterans to just die when budgets get cut.
There are organizations that work to get service and therapy dogs to veterans. One such group is Paws for Purple Hearts. There are others.
Some groups that work with prison populations to have inmates learn/work to train service dogs are partnering with groups that help get dogs for veterans. The inmates grow and learn much, the dogs provide all manner of help for veterans who deserve good care.
The VA needs proper funding to provide proper care. I agree with wolfess, it is obscene that legislators can't do the right thing and raise taxes on the richest so those who serve the nation can survive.
Oh hell yes, but none of our elected employEEs have the balls to tax the 1% at a higher rate! Shameful is right -- the military contractors have made TRILLIONS off of these wars, but no one is willing to give back to the people that actually FOUGHT them!
