It's Official Folks America Has Become a Third World Country::::UN Affiliate Will Monitor U.S. Elections

The upcoming presidential elections will be observed by election monitors from countries that have their own issues with democracy.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a group that has observed U.S. elections since 2002, is sending dozens of monitors from around the world to monitor the presidential and congressional elections in the United States this November.

As CNS News reports, 12 of those monitors come from countries that Freedom House ranks "not free," specifically Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and six come from countries ranked "partly free."

The highly regarded democracy watchdog notes that Kazakhstan's 71-year-old president recently won a new five-year term in a snap election with more than 96 percent of the vote. And Belarus has jailed former presidential candidates for protesting flawed elections.

The OSCE monitors are set to "assess these elections for compliance with international obligations and standards for democratic elections, including the commitments agreed to by all the OSCE participating States, and with national legislation. The mission will analyze the legislative framework and its implementation and will follow campaign activities, the work of the election administration and relevant government bodies, including voter registration, and the resolution of election disputes. As part of its observation, the ODIHR mission will conduct comprehensive monitoring of the media," according to a statement.

They will meet with officials and candidates, and visit polling stations on Election Day.

A recent OSCE report said that "recent state-level legislative initiatives to limit early voting and introduce stricter voter identification have become highly polarized. Democrats are concerned that these would disenfranchise eligible voters, while Republicans believe they are necessary to protect the integrity of the vote."

Different activist groups, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sent a letter to the head of the monitoring team urging him to post monitors in states where voting ID laws and early voting restrictions have gone into effect.

"Further, election observation helps to improve our citizens' trust and confidence in election results. Accordingly, we urge the OSCE to deploy its limited election monitors in those states where restrictions on voting have been most extensive—Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Texas and Wisconsin. Poll monitors should be particularly vigilant about requests for, and acceptance of, identification of those seeking to vote, particularly if certain groups, such as racial minorities and young voters, are being targeted," reads the letter, in part.

Hilary Shelton, the senior vice president for policy and advocacy with the NAACP, says the monitors are a good thing, even if some of them come from countries regarded as less than free.

"We have plenty of flawed election systems around the world including our own," Shelton said. "These are people that are all trained by the OSCE and they all know what to look for."

He singled out states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida as places to watch. While none of the three have stringent voter ID laws that will be in effect on election day, there has been confusion surrounding what is required to vote, especially in Pennsylvania, where poll workers may ask for ID even though it is not required.

Shelton said it is "difficult for us to monitor ourselves" and said the nonpartisan monitors will hopefully mitigate any accusations of political jockeying by either party.

"Having a nonpartisan, independent entity is good," he said.

    • I'm not certain the article is saying exactly what you're implying. Is the intent to make sure US elections are fair or to "observe" in order to learn how democratic nations run elections? Reason I say this is that official election monitors always state publicly whether an election was fair or rigged. I can't imagine representatives from these countries doing that.

Regardless, America has needed official non-partisan election monitors since the 2000 election was likely rigged and the 2004 election was definitely rigged.

For decades. Remember Katherine Harris in 2000, Florida Secretary of State. She purged thousands of eligible voters from the voter lists. Ken Blackwell, Ohio Secretary of state/04, was accused of overseeing massive and unprecedented voter irregularities, and abnormalities that disenfranchised tens of thousands of voters.

By gosh you're sharp, found this tidbit from one of their old reports.
      "
Voter identification requirements. While in the majority of states voters are not required to produce any identification document (ID) when they present themselves at precincts to vote, in 17 states all voters must produce ID. The EOM was not aware of problems connected with the introduction of new ID requirements under HAVA.

    • Good. This is the best thing that could happen for this election. The Reps will be working overtime to steal this election.

    • Sorry, don't see any importance to this issue. They have no power to overturn our election. We constantly insist on monitoring elections in other countries. We already know that our elections are flawed...what possible difference could it make that other people make the same observations? If they DO observe systematic election irregularities, I would like to hear their observations and judge for myself whether I think they are raising valid issues. ANY way that we can maintain the integrity of our election process and keep voters from being pressured or intimidated is a good thing, regardless of the source of the observation.

    • was reading about this yesterday...good post old dude. Seems the rest of the world is vested in making sure Romney doesn't steal the election like Bush did twice. Seems inconsequential though when you realize your best vote for change we need should not get anywhere close to either of these guys. At least with Romney you know you are getting screwed by a lying, unconscionable fool rather than not knowing you are getting screwed by the "people's" pick civil rights attorney. Neither would be where they are if the agenda was really going to change.

    • Oh.

The article isn't talking about how Wall Street banks, MIC and Big Oil have sold us out, robbed us blind and have, for all intents and purposes, left us with nothing more than a puppet government.

But hey, enjoy that illusion of meaningless choice your corporate overlords have so generously given you.

    • This is what happens when you let monied aristocracy run amuck in ones politics. Same as all other 3rd world countries where the uber rich disenfranchising the poor of their political voice. Now thanks to Citizens United we live in a third world title-less Aristocratic plutocracy. Maybe we aught to make some amendments to our constitution that disallows any individual or business from having a greater influence than the poorest citizen? You know have it be equal?

    • I agree with the NAACP, we definitely need poll monitors to monitor our elections. American elections are becoming more undemocratic each election. Republicans has systematically set in place laws and practices to openly discriminate against Democratic voters.
Voting machines and partisan poll workers can't be trusted. The RNC has been connected to the biggest election fraud/registration fraud in the history of the country. They pretend to be extremely fraud conscious as long as it is a fake charge against Democrats. They successfully got rid of ACORN on fake charges. Their primary goal was to stop their extremely successful voter registration capabilities.
For those of you who claim to be patriotic and disagree with this obvious much needed action, are in major denial.
We patriotic Americans only want elections that are fair and free for all American citizens.

"Their primary goal was to stop their extremely successful voter registration capabilities." for one party using taxpayer funding to do it.... Oh some of those ACORN's were tried and convicted.... Guess they needed a good Constitutional Lawyer to get them off, where was he ?

Want to be a patriot, get out there and work the polls, you as a citizen can go and hang around and watch out for hijinx, got your cell phone take a movie...

Sure hope some of them get busted in Texas, toss their butts in the pokey for a coupla days. I reckon they will be checking the monitors for proper identification......

I don't need for you to tell me how to spent my time, or what it takes to be more patriotic. First and foremost, you don't know how I spend my time, or how I am contributing to make America a more perfect union. That's not your damn business! Unlike you, I am committed to fair elections for Democratic and Republican citizens. I can promise you this, I will do everything in my power to make certain that Mitt Romney and his unpatriotic/treasonists/Fascist Republican parasites are defeated.

Since Reagan, you have slowly but surely defaulted to third-world and banana republic status, with the occasional reprieve and improvements brought by Democrat presidencies and administraions. But it seems that right-wingers would much rather live in a shanty-town poverty-ridden failed country than in a prosperous and happy one.

Who said anything about a socialist state? I was referring to a third-world banana republic state - that has nothing whatsoever to do with a socialist state. Mind you, I kind of like the prosperous socialist states like Norway, Sweden, Switzerland et al :)
