A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck the Queen Charlotte Islandsoff the west coast of Canada, US government researchers said.
The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 8:04 local time was located 139 kilometres south of the town of Masset, the US Geological Survey said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami at this time.
***That has changed, there was a warning for Hawaii, Japan!
But the Tsunami was smaller than expected, that is good.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
An aftershock measuring 5.8 hit soon after, located 154 kilometres south of Masset.
***Many more aftershocks 4.3, 4.7, 5.1 happened. Lower in number then Higher.
The earthquake reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.

***Also strange, there was a 2.8 Earthquake in Volcano, Hawaii.

I worked for a month on the baby island directly north next to Dall Island. Long Island but no permanent residents. It does have a cave system that has never been really explored. It is managed by Kluk One ( spelled wrong) Native corporation that has been surviving by logging it. I was planing trees and had my best month ever. I was at my top planting ability at that time. We were out of there as the bad weather hit late October 1997. Spent Halloween in Circle Hot Springs, Alaska that year. Gold country! The crew was only 8 people.

I happened to notice the earthquake on the geo map.
Stuff, info on the internet etc tends to find me.
I don't go looking for this stuff, it tends to find me!
Really it does! That was a big quake for one part close to the fault.
There will be others being how big that was.
Too much earth moving around there.I wonder what it is related to.

Holy cow! An earthquake and tsunami warning in the West, a mega storm heading for Eastern Canada, and the Northwest Territories snowed under with two feet of the wettest heaviest snow I've ever seen up here. Do you think Mother Nature is trying to tell us something?

Sure hope that you miss the worse of it. They are expecting the hurricane going North and the Arctic storm going South to collide. It's just a matter of where. Make sure you have provisions in case you are unable to get out or your power goes out.

They're no longer known here as the Queen Charlotte Islands - the official name since 2009 is Haida Gwaii, following a reconciliation agreement between the Haida and the provincial government.
Thank goodness not much has happened, considering the magnitude! So far, there are no reported injuries - just a lot of stuff rolling, shaking and falling off shelves. No tsunami, despite the warning. Amazing no one seems to be hurt.

I've got live coverage going on both CBC and CTV. They're talking to residents - power is back on, everyone's going home from the evacuation centers. Everyone's just fine. Also, the tsunami warning has been downgraded to an advisory. - 7 months ago

I also have relatives and friends on Vancouver Island and in the Vancouver area, so I was very concerned when I first hear about it. It's something I always have in the back of my mind, because the big one will hit there one day. - 7 months ago
