If You Succumb to Cynicism, The Regressives Win it All

Your cynicism is understandable. But cynicism is a self-fulfilling prophesy. If you succumb to it, the regressives who want to take this nation back to the 19th century win it all.
The Koch brothers, Karl Rove, the rabid Republican right, CEOs and Wall Street titans who want to entrench their privileges and tax advantages – all of them would like nothing better than for every progressive in America to throw in the towel.
Then America is entirely theirs.
The alternative to cynicism is to become more involved in politics. Help create a progressive force in this nation that grows into a movement that can’t be stopped.
We almost had it last year in the Occupy movement. We had the arguments and the energy. What we lacked was organization and discipline.
I’ve spent years in Washington and I know nothing good happens there unless good people outside Washington are organized and mobilized to put pressure on Washington to make it happen.
This isn’t new. In the election of 1936, a constituent approached FDR with a list of things she wanted him to do if reelected. “Ma’am,” he said, “I’d like to do all those things. But if I’m reelected, you must make me.”
We must make them.
I suggest a two-step plan.
Step one: Vote for Barack Obama for President and vote for every Democratic senator and representative in Congress. Get off your ass and make sure your friends and relatives do the same.
Step two: Starting Election Day, regardless of who’s elected, commit at least three hours every week to political organizing and mobilizing. Connect with other progressives in your city and state. Help find and recruit new progressive candidates to run against Republicans in swing states, and against conservative Democrats. Support the members of the progressive caucus in Congress. Raise money. Raise a ruckus.
Make it our goal to reverse Citizens United, even if it takes a constitutional amendment. And have public financing of elections (including requiring the media to provide free political advertising as part of their commitment to public service).
Also break up the biggest banks and resurrect the Glass-Steagall Act.
Put a 2 percent surtax on wealth in excess of $3 million. And a one-tenth of 1 percent transaction tax on every financial transaction. And restore top tax rates to what they were before Ronald Reagan became president.
Use half this revenue to pay down the national debt and half to make sure every American has a world-class education.
Put a tax on carbon, and use the revenues to reduce or replace payroll taxes.
Have a single-payer health-care system that delivers care at far less cost than our current balkonized and inefficient one.
And much else.
You say it can’t happen — the system is too rotten.
It won’t happen if you wallow in the comfort of your cynicism. But it will happen if you and others like you get fired up.
We’ve done it before.
I remember when progressives joined with African-Americans to get enacted the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts. I remember when progressives stopped the Vietnam War. When women finally got freedom of choice over their own bodies. When the Environmental Protection Act became law.
Who would have imagined two decades ago that America would elect an African-American as President of the United States? Who would have supposed gays and lesbians would begin to achieve equal marriage rights?
Of course we can take America back.
Stop complaining and start organizing.
And by all means, vote.

How does one effectively estimate one's carbon foot print in order to bill that individual for the amount of carbon that they've used/contributed?
Would there then be a tax on all products which contain carbon such as; carbohydrates, fats, proteins, nucleic acids, wood, coal, seashells, pencils, plastic, fabrics, sodas, vegetables, water filtration systems, etc.
Also, Diamonds are pure carbon, what would be the percentage of added tax on something that is 100% carbon??? - 7 months ago

To those of you who think the Dems are the same as the TeaPublicans; Do you really think that things will be OK if RobMe becomes President and the TeaPublicans take over the House and Senate?
If the Dems win then we at least have a Chance to change things a little but if the TeaPublicans take complete control then we WILL become the “Corporate/Wall Street States of America”!
If you care at all about what the Corporations and Banks will do to our country then Why would you even consider doing Anything that would allow them to take control? That includes doing nothing!
Don’t give me that Crap about “Oh, it is the same either way” because it is NOT! - 7 months ago

I've heard “Oh, it is the same either way” and supporting a third party candidate compared to the analogy of abstinence
"It's kind of like abstinence only birth control you get to feel really proud about the fact that you stand by what/who you believe in while you completely side step taking responsibility for practical responsibilities that everyone has to live with day to day."
But as Jesse LaGreca points out, the corruptions starts with the corporations so that's the part to focus on, after all to deal with a "vampire squid, it's not the tentacles that need to be cut out, it's the brains"
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/28/1151536/-The-Art-of-the-Possible
"We need to look at what is possible from the place where we are standing right now, not the place where we wish we were standing. I understand the argument that unless people on the left can credibly threaten to withhold their votes, they cannot push the Democratic party to the left. Let's look at the argument in another way. If you withhold your vote and Obama loses, do you think you will be able to bring the Democratic party to the left? I agree that we need to move in that direction, but I do not see where voting third party or abstaining will accomplish that goal. We have good indication that Romney is not the moderate Republican he occasionally pretends to be. I believe that during a Romney presidency the Overton window will move even farther to the right. With tax cuts and military spending, he will run up the deficit and the thus force even future administrations to cut spending on social programs and infrastructure whether or not they want it. He will deregulate industries, including the financial industry, which will result in greater ecological degradation and increased risk of yet another financial collapse. We will be generations digging out of that hole if the climate holds out long enough to allow us to do it.
It is quite clear that we are not where we would like to be. My own feeling is that shortly after the election, it would be productive to have a brainstorming session, if not here, then elsewhere, to throw out ideas about what actions could possibly be productive. My own guess is that different people will opt for different actions depending exactly where on the ideological spectrum he or she lies and what his or her particular situation, interests and abilities permit. I am not at all in disagreement with the fact that we have not been getting the results that we want. What will get us those results, I don't know."
After the election the OWS protests will be even more important to put pressure on getting those results, that way it keeps the attention focused on the continued corruption.

Most 'progressive' cynicism is a tired shibboleth; '..there are no (or little) differences between the candidates.' To that, I ask '...where were you when Democrats were having county or precinct meetings? Folk --if you think Democrats are just as bad as the GOP, then take back your party. But you'll have to get up off our couch to do it. You will have to get involved at the precinct level. Organize!
Keep in mind: EVERY campaign costs money. The GOP campaign manuals state upfront that the candidate spending the most money wins. The GOP strategy always consists of rule number one: RAISE MONEY AND OUTSPEND YOUR OPPONENT.

I disagree with the voting part, and feel that a vote for President Obama only preserves a fucked status quo. But I do agree that people need to get more engaged in politics--especially at the state and local level.

Very well put! Some choose cynicism because its convenient! Believing that Democracy takes care of itself. Or any other excuse to make light work of civic duties. Lazy? Maybe. Can't stand the pressures? Probably!

I wouldn't be so cynical if some of the obvious sob's actually went to jail sometime.....ever. Till then I would be less insulted if Obama and Romney, instead of a debate.....just got up at the start and did an actual "Tap Dance" on stage. No joke, just tap dance like they were on DWTS and we could vote on that. It is just as valid as the BS coming out of both their mouths!!!

While I'd agree that Romney's performance in the debate should be taken as seriously as DWTS with all the lies he told. I'd bet he wouldn't last as long as Tom Delay did who was eliminated on the 3rd night of the 9th season of DWTS
Maybe it would help to lighten the load of your cynicism to know that some progress has been made on "the obvious sob's actually went to jail sometime.....ever." because of this sentencing. At least it's a start
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/24/rajat-gupta-sentenced-insider-trading_n...
"The former Goldman Sachs director was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison, followed by another year of parole, and ordered to pay a $5 million fine. He was convicted in June on insider-trading charges, following a trial that included testimony from Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein.
“With today’s sentence, Rajat Gupta now must face the grave consequences of his crime – a term of imprisonment," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement. "His conduct has forever tarnished a once-sterling reputation that took years to cultivate.
"We hope that others who might consider breaking the securities laws will take heed from this sad occasion and choose not to follow in Mr. Gupta’s footsteps," Bharara added.
But the government is clearly making a notable effort to stop it, winning convictions of more than 70 people during a wide-ranging, three-year assault, notes Peter Lattman of the New York Times.
"When one looks at the nature and circumstances of the offense, the picture darkens considerably, some prison time was necessary as a deterrent to other inside-traders." Judge Jed S. Rakoff wrote, adding that "his criminal acts represented the very antithesis of the values he had previously embodied."
Gupta was convicted of giving tips to another convicted inside-trader, former hedge-fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison. In Rakoff's words, Gupta's tip was "the functional equivalent of stabbing Goldman in the back."

yea, I saw that....I do wonder why this guy and not Blankfein. But Blankfein is now on the witness stand? I am not comforted that he can throw his employees under the bus while walks away scott free.

But doesn't it start unraveling after that? As they say "when there's chum in the water, the sharks come out to feed" so after beginning to " throw his employees under the bus" the secrets will show and more evidence shared to get more convictions.

Well OWS really did "get the ball rolling" to grab attention since no one was even talking about it before that, so maybe to increase the pressure the crimes have to get more exposure.

The media loves sensationalism and that show "To Catch a Predator" was fairly popluar, so maybe if they used the same format on Wall Street with a new show like "To Catch an Insider Trader" or "To Catch Money Laundering" that would put more focus on them.

What Reich points out as "You say it can’t happen — the system is too rotten. It won’t happen if you wallow in the comfort of your cynicism" applies a lot more to the media that has been bought out than to the voters, The "Fourth Estate" hides from their responsibility in a pose of cynicism and doesn't hold people accountable for their hypocrisy or lies
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/23/1149165/-Richard-Wolfe-Romney-Doesn-t-T...
"Mitt Romney hasn't had gaffes. He's had monumental fuckups (excuse my language), lie after lie, misstatement after misstatement, reinvention after reinvention, con after con. Romney is the only presidential candidate in history to lie his way through an entire debate and actually not only be declared a winner, but be bolstered by the press as the winner. In this country, our press is supposed to be the last bastion of truth, the people who can't be bought. Sure, we have always had slime in the press, but there have always been a group of brave souls who swam against the tide in pursuit of truth.
I dont' know who has been worse, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, or hell, even NPR. The minute the first debate ended, the media was supposed to be all over Romney's ass like white on rice. Instead, we had the right ignoring the lies and claiming a "game changer", with the left wetting their respective pants and basically handing a tainted victory to the GOP without blowing consistent gaskets over Romney's blatant series of lies.
One commercial of John Kerry windsurfing railroaded his campaign, and, if I can recall, the left rolled over. Mitt Romney has given the media so much catnip to work with, it seems almost implausible that they haven't trounced on him like a wounded cat."

Reich made a lot of good points, especially about the self-fulfilling prophecy that just fuels apathy and lets the corporate interests go unchecked. And about the Occupy protests lacking organization and discipline.
One reinforced the other since if OWS had accepted an organization that could keep the focus on the crimes committed by Wall Street and had the discipline to increase the pressure to hold them accountable, then they would've made more progress.
Unfortunately the "regressives" used cynicism to distort and dilute the message of OWS and increase the apathy, but if the Occupy movement had more organization to support people like Jesse LaGreca, they could've made more progress in getting the justice for the crimes of Wall Street

I love Robert Reich ... he is one of those Obama should have picked to be part of his cabinet. Anyway, we have all these voices (Chris Hedges, Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg and Robert Reich) telling us what it's going to take to get our country back and that means we have no one to blame but ourselves if we don't follow the suggestions of so many good, intelligent people who have been writing about this ...

Cynicism is what allowed the Regressive Tea Party Republicans to have an overwhelming victory in the 2010 election. We all know what followed, they voted over 30 times to repeal ObamaCare, attacked women's healthcare, made attempts to deregulate every industry, and many other regressive initiatives. So many lazy cynics will say that they don't think their vote matters. Well guess who is going to make sure their vote does matter? These old, ultra-religious, racists.
So if you want to give them the chance, you can bet they will wreck this country and the planet. It's your choice; stay home and let the Republicans gain control, or make an effort to protect the progress we have made.
