What Does It Mean that Residents in All 50 States Have Filed Petitions to Secede?

-

- added this
A lot of attention is being given to the fact that residents in all 50 states have filed petitions to secede from the United States.
Daily Caller reports:
By 6:00 a.m. EST Wednesday, more than 675,000 digital signatures appeared on 69 separate secession petitions covering all 50 states, according to a Daily Caller analysis of requests lodged with the White House’s “We the People” online petition system.
***
Petitions from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas residents have accrued at least 25,000 signatures, the number the Obama administration says it will reward with a staff review of online proposals. (RELATED: Will Texas secede? Petition triggers White House review)
The Texas petition leads all others by a wide margin.
***
States whose active petitions have not yet reached the 25,000 signature threshold include Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
***
Fourteen states are represented by at least two competing petitions. The extra efforts from two states — Missouri and South Carolina — would add enough petitions to warrant reviews by the Obama administration if they were combined into petitions launched earlier.
Other states with multiple efforts include Alaska, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.
As Google notes, web searches for the term “secession” are being run in a number of states:
Conservatives – such as Judge Napolitano and Ron Paul - say that the states have the right to secede. And Texas governor Rick Perry said that Texas has a right to secede (although he counsels against it at the current time).
On the other hand, most liberals say that the Civil War ended the state’s right to secede. Huffington Post is covering the wave of secession petitions …

Actually turbo, when you bring up past elections of other presidents as a means of comparison, you make the discussion open to, and about, all past presidents, including Bush Jr. That's not a distortion, that is a fact, and if you think that you can compare Obama's re-election to the re-election of past presidents and claim that it is a pitiful thing compared to the previously re-elected presidents and not have pitiful and/or criminal aspects of the elections of some of the more sad examples of recent Republican presidents, then you are very much an idiot.

Yes, you were very specific. You wrote:
"Yes, it is a leftist circle jerk. They do not refer to the fact that Obummer is the FIRST president in our ENTIRE history to get a lower % of the votes upon winning re-election to his second term. The FIRST.
It was a sad day in our history. Obummer won, that is the fact, but it is a sad day."
This is implying that it is pathetic that Obama was the first president to win a second term with fewer votes than he won the first term. By presenting this as pathetic AND putting it into a historical context which compared it to all previous presidents, you opened up the discussion to a slue of presidential election snafu's from elections past, including the fun little fuckups that were the elections of 2000 and 2004, as well as why those elections were fuckups.

Wow you ppl can get ugly for petty things or someones opinion all I wanted was to keep my rights.or voicing that I'd like to keep them..and ya WAS all over me..I never signed a petition to secede nor do I wish to...but I think with all the critical thinkers on this topic alone show what kind of ppl you claimed to be, stigmatized others for what they wish to stand up for or believe in ...that is on them.
...all I'm saying is they have rights TOO!!! just like you do unless I woke up in commie country.....you all talk about bigotry, racist, fascist ppl but don't look in the mirror....who ever signs the stupid petition ...its their problem not yours or mine and I'd like to see any of you dare try and push them out of the country
..lmfao at the stupidity you all speak of about others....great ppl

Hello gypsygirl1965, welcome to current. You have to remember, this site was created by Al Gore, who is a hard core liberal. If you come here talking about crazy ideas like freedom and liberty, you will be perceived as a right wing troll.
Also, if you want to be taken seriously, do not type with caps locked. It is hard to read and most people here will ignore you. This is a great place to express what you think, and people here are pretty cool, but you have to realize most of em are die hard liberals and you're on their turf.
Hope you decide to stay, we freedom fighters need all the help we can get!

People don't typically secede... regional and local governments do. And currently, no STATE has any 'right' to secede from these United States of America. Secession hasn't been an option for states since the end of the civil war. One of the major outcomes of that war made them 'united'.
Wow... are folks so bored now that the election is over that this secession idiocy is all we have to talk about now?

I don't comment much on Current, but I read the posts and vote my reaction frequently. I felt compelled to speak out this time to you. Unless one is trolling and trying to drum up a viseral reaction, most respond in kind and are usually pretty civil here even when they don't agree.
--------------------------
"my bf told me about the ppl on current being kind and great free thinkers...i have my opinion about that one...you all treated me like shit when i didn't even do anything"
Well,
--you came in yelling (all caps),
--throwing around falsehoods ("Obama signed 923 [executive orders] in 4 years of office more then any President in history...I would suggest you do the research before you attack someone...")--you should research; your statement is not true or accurate.
--and calling people names ("I WILL LET THE SHEEPLE SLEEP..GO BACK TO YOUR COMA")
--accusing people of trying to "take your rights"
--and generally being disagreeable ("I CAN READ BUT I DON'T HAVE TO AGREE WITH IT OR ANY OF YOU EITHER..."); you're right, you don't have to agree--we all have that right.
And now you wonder at your chilly reception by some while continuing to insult ("you ppl can get ugly for petty things"). How would you react to someone who came to your home and treated you like that? If you want to be treated kindly while encouraging open discussion, try leading with that yourself. - 6 months ago

Al Gore is no "hard core liberal".
How could his "Prosperity for America's Families" paper, for example, be read as anything but a reassurance to big business that, if elected, he would do nothing to undermine Wall Street's economic polices? Or as anything but a further exacerbation of existing social inequality in the US? Just the same old, same old populist rhetoric.
Admittedly, his stance on green issues seemed to set him apart. But not far enough.

Hey Gypsygirl1965, I am heartened by your response. To use a cliche, but true here I hope, it takes a big person to admit when they're wrong. I don't always agree with all here, but that's the point isn't it? We all get to have our say and sometimes we even enlighten each other. Sometimes I'm won over and other times more entrenched based on commentary that runs the gamut from profound to profane. I like how they mix it up here. People's backgrounds seem as diverse as their philosophy. That's how I like it.
I know I'm smarter and no pun intended, more current because I visit the community here. And it is always good for a jolt of humor, wit, and popular culture (see Jackhole, HarukoHaruhara, Muse, LiveInPeace, KennyMotown, Bailey, Leen, Cool--some of my favs, just to name a very few--no, they don't know me from Adam). If for nothing else, I get ideas and share some of their opinions with others I come across in the real, offline world. Welcome, I hope you'll continue to add to the discussion--your passion really comes through--and that's a good thing.
[Edit] PS--I speak in smartass too and it is an often misunderstood language, even in person.

If you clicked the full link and read the article [which judging from the comments it's apparent nobody even read past the rhetorical question headline], the article concludes that the secession buzz isn't a movement, and nothing will come of it.

Funny how they went from racists & bigots to secessionists. They righties cannot seem to get with the american experience and are welcome to recind their citizenship and go to another country and live. Maybe the rest of us can petition the government to give up Texas and deport all of the knucledraggers to their new country. The president needs to declare them a threat to our democracy and domestic terrorists. Suspend their rights and send them packing. They only love the country when they are in charge and certainly not an african american. Think of all the money we could save by not giving these free loading white trash rednecks the government assistance they so collectively dispise. And if he responds to this I'm sure he'll deny that he thinks being critical of some of the messed up things that the United States has done is the same thing as belittling it.
By the way Mishie-poo, care to tell me who won the election? Was it the guy who you claimed was going to unquestionably win?

Yes, you just did it. Profaned and defiled America. Of course, Left-wingers will ALWAYS provide a rationale for demeaning and reviling the United States of America, but they ALWAYS do it. Their contrived, deceitful, puerile excuses are not the issue at all.

Aaaaannnd there he goes, proving me right about how he thinks that being critical of some of the messed up things that the United States has done is the same thing as belittling it.
I think I'll put up the definition of belittle for fun... also to show that Mishie doesn't really know what the word means.
be·lit·tle/biˈlitl/
Verb:
Make (someone or something) seem unimportant: "this is not to belittle his role".Heads up Mishie-poo, to be critical of something that should be critically observed is not making something seem unimportant.

You were right I was waiting for his comment before commenting to you. The USA does a lot of things wrong that's why we have two Parties, that way we should not get too far right or left.

It depends, if they are just whining then let them have some cheese and forget about it. But people would care if they are disgruntled enough to "go postal" over it.

Most of these petitions have only a few hundred or a few thousand signatures, the signatures of a disgruntled bunch of racist haters.

"Racists?" Why do you constantly race-bait? Don't you know that Vermont, for example, has had a petition to secede for decades, and that Vermont is about 98% of one race? Why do you inject race into everything?

Oh look, you've resurrected. Have you finally digested your crow pie? A handful of people in Vermont, not the whole of Vermont. That Vermont is 98% of one race is irrelevant. I am curious to know what non-humans consist the remaining 2%, because there is only one race, the human race. The actual secession petitions are based on racism because Obama is black, and has done a darned better job than any Republican president since WWI, and they cannot deal with that.

Vierotchka:
It IS relevant. You proclaimed that people who want to secede are racists.
Why do you race-bait? Why do you try to stir up racial animosity? Don't you know that these petitions have been around since before Obama? You are duped by the media. First, you think that because the news is reporting it now, it is something unusual and special. Heck, I lived in Alaska over two decades ago, and there was a rather big movement when Ronald Reagan was president, and it had nothing to do with his being president. Vermont has had it for years, well before Obama.
So, first you let the news tell you what to think: It reports this, so you just accept it as something new and special because it is on your TV screen.
Second, you never even consider the history. You completely and unquestioningly accept the interpretation presented on your television: It is because of racism.
You are a participant in this farce. You are fomenting racial strife and anger. Please stop it.
