A federal court has approved a nearly $13 million settlement in a nationwide class-action lawsuit initiated by women who worked as exotic dancers for the Spearmint Rhino adult nightclub in Oxnard. It took more than two years for U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips to approve the settlement as lawyers tried to show that the agreement represented all the dancers' interests fairly.
Two women who danced at the Spearmint Rhino in Oxnard launched the suit: Christeen Rivera and Tracy Dawn Trauth. They claimed they were wrongly treated as independent contractors rather than employees entitled to benefits. They sought back wages, tips, attorney fees and damages.
According to the suit, the women each earned an average of $500,000 a year in tips for lap and table dances. But the dancers alleged most of the money went to the club to cover "rent," the disc jockey, stage fees, overhead costs and even penalties if they didn't get enough men to purchase drinks during a shift.

In my experience dancers were always treated very badly by the bar owners. I don't want to get into the details except to say sex was often demanded daily to keep thier jobs and the girls were urged to do drugs to get thru the tireing work. Then they became drug dependant on the owner's drug supply as thier lives turned upsidedown and the owners got all the money and the girls got sick. On top of that the owners always wanted fresh faces and fresh meat so there was no bassis to any guarantee of long term employment. I have absolutely loved wemon and hate to see them treated like commodeties for sale and then trashed out. It was a cruel lesson in my early life to see how that industry worked dragging girls in by promises that were lies and then callously abuseing them nearly to death. Often all the way to death. Everything I ever saw of the industry was a nightmare of human cruelty, despair, and betrayal. A good book to understand the underlieing economy of the industry is called DAMAGED BAGGAGE by Sean Ocallahan. I highly recomend it for anyone who dares to look at the muddy clay feet of a "free market" economy. There is also POSO DEL MUNDO by David Ovid . The text is in english. The title translates roughly into POTHOLE OF THE WORLD. The next two books to continue the coarse are DOUBLE CROSS and DOUBLE DEAL . Then DEFRAUDING AMERICA by Rodney Stich. And the book MEYER LANSKEY. These half dozen books will give your mind a fine sharp edge for understanding the history of the last few hundred years and how money is made in a "FREE MARKET" . A seventh book is FAT OF THE LAND . Not the one about obesity. This one is about recycleing , garbage disposal, big city graft, and how to blow up Europe in WWI with nitroglycerine made from dead horses drug off the streets of New York City. No would- be economist should be ignorant of the content of these books. If you read them you will know exactly what I mean.

$500,000 a year? That's a lot of money to be making to just take your clothes off.
They better be careful for what they wish for, or pretty soon the IRS will come knocking want their cut of the tips.

This Rhino owner has a history of fraud, and not
paying his bills. Seems he would rather pay his time in jail. Wow $13 mill is a tremendous amount of money. Is that going to be cash, check, or credit. - 6 months ago

Christeen Rivera & Tracy Dawn are HEROs. Exposing what's up with "Independent Contractors" vrs "employees" is awesome.
Reminds me of the late 60's, early 70's. Power to the People!

Exactly. These guys are clearly bad decision makers, with that horrid name for any business (let alone a nudie bar) being people's exhibit 1.

$500,000 a year? That sure seems like a lot of money.
I think judges go way over the top in some judgements and I bet on appeal these dancers will get far less. - 6 months ago

Well in the future these clubs will have to get their employees to sign contracts because over $2000/day per stripper is outrageous.

When that is compared to what is dropped per hour , the club makes out well ... consider just the price of drinks ...

Just because they are pretty and CAN do the job , does not mean you , their employer , or anyone else gets to treat them like chattel to be barely paid at all . It is a dangerous job . There are stalkers and pimps looking for fresh meat , and jerks who think they have a right to treat them like they are less than human . Just as a male might get paid a fair wage for his physical attributes/abilities to lift heavy objects at a construction site , so should a female get paid for standing in 4 inch heels for many hour acting like she enjoys the company of lonely , rich , revolting persons , so their life might not be completely devoid of joy .

considering that there is not one but probably 3 or more likely 4 strippers now you're up to $8000/day and that's alot of money. N|ow you have the bartenders to pay also so how many beers are you going to have to sell to pay out $8000 + rent + cost of liquor + bartenders salary + make a profit?

Most likey, the guys working on a construction site are LUCKY if they get 1/10th of 2000$ or $200/ for working 10 hrs. I have never heard of strippers staying at one place for a year to start out with. Usually they would spend one week at each bar and move from place to place changing employers each time. Contractors.
