Anti-Obamacare Rants Hurt Restaurant Brands (heh :)

By Matthew Yglesias
We've seen a number of intemperate anti-Obamacare rants from people in the restaurant industry, and there's at least a little evidence from the YouGuv Brand Index survey that some of the more high-profile opponents are suffering for it.

This is why, conventionally, business leaders exercise their political clout through behind-the-scenes activity or cloaked in the guise of trade associations. People aren't going to stop eating out if the National Restaurant Association gets involved in a high-profile political controversy, but Papa John's hurts itself by becoming the face of opposition to a signature Obama administration initiative.

There's no bailouts this time. And if you don't understand why bailouts were important when he first took office, then any explanations 4 years later won't help. But there will be no bailouts. What's gonna happen is the GOP, unless they get their shit together and stop acted retarded, are going to end up answering to their constituents on January 3rd. They egg won't dry on their faces until after they are voted out of office. There's gonna be a lot happened without their help. The best we can hope for is they get off their "written in stone" pledge to Wall Street and start working FOR the American people, something they've been extremely opposed to doing.

    • We have already said goodbye to Papa John and Denny's whose food, I must admit, is substandard. We've found local places with good food at a reasonable price with a nice environment. No more major chains will be solicited by us.

We all pretty much know who the business thieves are. What we need to start looking for and compiling a list of is the ones who do pay their employees a decent age and have a "common sense" approach in support of a decent age. What goes around comes around approach, in that if the employees have sufficient funds in their paychecks, they can afford to keep businesses operating. If they don't, the government funding of foodstamps, health care, housing, etc. will continue.

    • Thank you Thank you Thank you. To the owners of these companies: Just shut up and do it. Shut up and take care of the people that make your money for you.

    • Thanks cpad for this blog. I would really like to know if there is a place we can find all the large corporations who do pay their employees with a sufficient wage to keep them able to contribute to a healthy economy, such as Costco. If there was one near me, I'd surely be shopping there. I truly believe a substantial raise in the minimum wage is long overdue. Walmart and others have been growing their own bank accounts - even off-shore accounts - on the back of not only their employees, but on the tax-paying public at large. They need to offer more full-time positions and better wages to get them off dependency on government aid. It's outrageous for them to have to work 2 or 3 part-time jobs to make ends meet and still not have enough to provide food and care for their families.

    • The cool thing about all of these Obamacare 'rants' is that they are revealing how prevalent working exploitation is in the States. The only companies that are complaining are companies that do not offer healthcare for full-time workers. To be honest, I find it pretty hilarious.

Look, the whole premise behind the ACA is that if you are an employer that benefits from the effort of your employees, you should take care of them. If the profitability of your business is predicated on exploiting your workers, then you shouldn't be in business.

In the short term it is the employees because they aren't working. But in the long-term, they will have a chance to catch up if the people stop patronizing these carpet bagger businesses, such as Hostess and others who would rather fold than cave into the needs of their workers. I can't say it enough times. The minimum wage must be raised, the corporate billionaires must stop stuffing their pockets. They won't go broke if their businesses fail. When your worth is something over one billion dollars, their money will last them long enough to build 10 more businesses that can rip off their employees.

I can't believe John Boner's comment about being "Flabbergasted." He's in serious need of a reality adjustment!

I'm not sure how you mean that: Do you mean voting with your dollar. Do you mean donating to the party. Obama only got small donations for the most part, but he got them from millions of people that put him on top. By contrast, Romney's dollars came in from huge donations, $1.5 million alone from Adelstein or whatever his name is that owns Vegas hotels among other things.

If you're talking about supporting the worker by shopping in stores owned by greedy thieves, just think how happy they are in their jobs. I know some Walmart employees. They are not happy at all. How can you be happy if even when you are working your butt off, you still have to dip into foodstamp benefits to feed your family? The only place you can hit these corporate raiders is in their pocket books. Don't forget that anytime one door closes, another door opens. When and if Walmart has to close its doors, just think of all the mom and pop shops that they put out of business that can now reopen. Look at all the cities that have empty store fronts that could reopen if the likes of Walmart did not exist. I hurt too for these employees, but their lot in life is just not what it should be or could be. Somehow we have to put the brakes on these corporate execs.

    • And consider how the employees feel.
Imagine your boss now wanting to raise the price of pizza by fifteen cents so you can get your medical problems resolved.

      Very motivational.

    • These jerks are showing their true colors by being so self-serving and not caring about their employees all the while they are swimming in huge profits. It's about time middle America, who are their customers, show them what they think.

I was appalled when I heard what these workers are earning. We complain about the sweat shops in Asia, but how is this any different? These companies rake in big profits because of their practices, then the American tax payer has to subsidize their employees through such things as food stamps. These corporations then complain about the government providing food stamps to the poor. It's a vicious cycle that needs to stop. It's time to support these workers who are rallying to form a union and get paid a decent wage.

If the minimum wage was raised fewer people would need government subsidies.

We had a Papa Johns in my town, but they cost too much & no one went there.
We had a Starbucks & we had 2 Advanced auto stores, now we have one.
The wages sets the market, my town has low pay & all the poor, like me
shut these places down, they just cost too much!

As in this kind of joke kind of thing. I make what I call a "Fancy Starbucks."
It's Coffee with Hot chocolate & milk in it in a jar with a lid, I wrote on the sticker
      "Fancy Starbucks."

I even clean my laundry with 1 TBSP of comet, thats it, letting it sit for an hour.
Mostly I learned why do without make it your self.
Us types will put these people out of business!

So as for Papa Johns etc. Their sales are touchy! Any protest hurts their sales.
If they raise the prices it will be bad for them in small towns all over!

I make my own coffee at home too, if there is some leftover the next day I don't chuck it, I nuke it (microwave) and drink it. The few times I do order take out pizza I go to a locally owned place with awesome thin crust pizza.

    • I would like to say good for the SOB's, but the owners , board members will still be rich pigs. They'll just cut cost, not only in quality--as if there's any in hate chicken or shit pizza--but in personnel, less jobs. I really feel for anyone who has to work in such place and in this economy there may not be too many jobs to compete.

Eff you if you don't feel for the working stiff who has kids to feed. Reserve your anger for the store owner that supports these backward practices, those evil bastards are the trouble. Not the employees, not everybody can resign based on righteous indignation.

I agree completely. These are jobs people take when they are desperate. Hate to see people suffer even more. The rich pigs will do anything to run down the workers in this country. Disgusting.

I don't think it's righteous indignation on the part of the employees - I think it's pure desparation and dispair. The righteous indignation is solely in the domaine of the business owners who think we're too stupid to know they are thieves and carpet baggers. It seems most of them think that just because they give these bums a job, their consciences are clear. B.S. and double B.S.
