What has always been suspected has now come into the full glaring light that banks such as HSbC are truly supporting drug cartels. It's also come to light that of all entities supporting it, only three are in total support of the War on Drugs, the drug cartels themselves because with legalization their businesses will be dealt a crushing blow, the US government which strengthens the cartels with this idiotic "war" and the banks who are laundering drug money. The WAR ON DRUGS is an abomination for its cost in dollars to accomplish nothing, for the loss of revenue that could be reaped by its legalization and control if it was taxed much the same as tobacco or alcohol. Its an abomination in the lives lost: police and border patrol officers who are killed trying to stop it, the lost lives of people -young and old alike- for using unregulated drugs. Also, young people especially are losing their ability to “turn their lives around” after having a criminal record for a crime that probably never would have occurred had they not been placed into the criminal system in the first place. It’s been proven that teenagers do not have the mental maturity to know what is good for them and what is not. They do not reach that maturity until well into their mid-20's. By that time the damage to their ability to achieve gainful employment has been permanently damaged.
After so many years of this WAR, does anybody really believe we are going about this the right way? Below is a series of links of which there are thousands more if you just Google “Cost of War on Drugs.” No. This war is more of a failure than even the Vietnam war. Read on, that PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION BELOW.

Thanks Prog. Coming from you it means a lot. I was watching Steph Miller this morning and she said the White House got more signatures on that gun control petition than any petition in its history. Yet, the war on drugs has cost more lives through its history than even the assault weapons. Drug dealers on the streets don't normally care machine guns to kill sellers when they believe the sellers have cheated on them or worse, ratted. Just a simple Saturday Night Special seems to work well, and they work well in convenience store holdups. Gun controls are definitely needed. So is some alternative thinking to the war on drugs.
If only it would do 1/4th as well, at least somebody in government besides two states would have to listen.

Funny, many here call for an end to drug laws as they don't work yet in light of the shootings in CT this week call for more laws on guns which also, historically, do not work. Drugs good, guns bad. Stoned OK, self defense bad. This is not a comment on the pros or cons of drug legality but a comment on the hypocrisy of the left.

.Word up...The CIA ran drugs during the Vietnam war. They'd fly STOL Porters into the Central Highlands of 'Bodia, Laos and 'Nam , pick up the raw shit and bust ass back to the take-off point and once a week, fly the shit out in bulk to ??? That's then. Nothing has changed. There IS no " War on Drugs" when the warriors are the dealers. Then there's the sentencing.....LIFE FOR MINOR POSSESSION ?? Failure indeed.

I like to see articles like this on Fox and Forbes. The rest of the informed public has been waiting for a long time for the damn conservatives to lighten up on drug enforcement.
Hell, it's the most ironic thing in the world that conservatives are the ones championing the drug war. The majority speaks: This shit has got to GO!

I'm very happy that the petition for stricter gun regulation has succeeded. But it occurs to me that people are more worried about themselves and their children being shot by guns than they are of dying with needles in their arms. Please people, only 7 of you sign this Petition. It needs at least 150 signatures to be brought to the open on the White House Petition site. Certainly there are at least 143 more of you here that could help make that happen!

Your attitude boggles my mind. Pointless is evil existing because good men do nothing. Pointless is young people thinking unregulated pot is cheaper than if it gets regulated and taxed. Of course, not factored into that equation is the cost of time in the prison system, legal and court fees, an endless trip to rehab which someone - usually parents or friends - have to foot the bill for, inability for these people to get decent jobs because of criminal records. Is all that of value to you? To me, all that is pointless.

\I think the support for stopping the war on drugs is vastly underestimated. Sure the marijuana people are all here boosting the cause; but we don't get to hear from the dysfunctional broke opiate addicts because of their unfortunate coincidental zombification. But I'm sure if they were were able; they would add their voices to the chorus of pro recreational drug advocates.\

Cannabis is one subject, opiate addicts is another. I support legalization of cannabis and hemp. The facts regarding cannabis have been misleading, making hemp a casualty of war. You yourself described the problem of 'dysfunctional broke opiate addicts'. Legalizing substances like opiate's will not aid recovery. A different approach would be appropriate, but legalization is not.
President Obama was correct when he said we need to have a conversation. Legalizing all drugs is not the answer. Criminalization is not the answer either. We need a balanced approach to help those who are 'dysfunctional broke opiate addicts', enabling them to get back on track. Cannabis may be a 'gateway' to recovery for those who are suffering addiction from addictive drugs. We need to have the conversation.

I made peace with drugs, ever since then we've gotten along fine.
Rather than the vast sums of money spent on this lunatic ideal (The War on Drugs), the money would be better spent on communities. Not the kind of spending that goes to big developers either.
Billion dollar development contracts to developers destroys the essential fabric of communities by destroying the naturally evolved relationships and small businesses in the area. Communities would be better served by improvements to amenities, not by bulldozing their homes then keeping them couped up and isolated in high rise apartments or urban sprawl.
A properly functioning community can not be drawn out and planned on paper or with a computer. Businesses, relationships and co-operation must be allowed to naturally take place with people rising to the opportunity of meeting the needs of others. Remove the interactions that used to take place in small villages or old cities and you remove the opportunity that allows people to flourish.
This whole "free market" bullshit is a scam. A free market is a place where producers give their products away for free. The current system is a Financial Power Centric system where nearly all opportunities are seized by the wealthiest and best connected individuals.
Rather than the combined worth of all the small businesses being recognised, rather it's the few billion dollar developers who are seen. These developers get access to communities and generally reek havoc upon their structure for a one off "Billion Dollar Hit".
A properly functioning community could itself contribute a billion dollars to the economy time and time again if it is instead aided rather than conquered. If you turn a community into a concrete maze and remove all it's vibrancy and charm, then how else is one to add some colour to it without the use of drugs other than a couple of cans of spray paint.
Until politicians stop making eyes at big developers every time "communities" are mentioned, adults and children alike will indulge in a little LSD, Weed, Speed, Cocaine or Heroin to give their days in the cold concrete labyrinths a little more sunshine. On occasion they will also get drunk.

Because the states all have their own drug laws which are based on federal law. He can't do one without the other. He needs to start with commissions to determine how to go about deregulating, which drugs if not all, determine what would be incorporated into those laws, i.e., would anyone be allowed to grow it at home and how much, who will have the authority to dispense, and what about taxing it, and on and on. The only thing we can hope for at this point is WILL HE TAKE THE FIRST STEP? I don't think he has the cajones to do it unless, like in DOMA, he is overrun by demand for it. If the people don't speak directly to him, he does not hear you. That's why it's SO important that the petition be signed by everyone.

If you really hope you are wrong, then you are. The gun control petition now has in excess of 27,000 signatures, and the President is listening. To say you don't think they help is evidence of the evil that occurs when good men do nothing. Doing nothing is the lazy person's way of complaining about what's wrong with the world and just stopping there - doing nothing. As far as hoping I succeed, I thank you for that, but there's no way I know of to succeed without support. Just the same as the dems finally getting off their asses and voting Obama in for a second term. And just like all these republicans who have been unseated from the House in Jan. 2013, it takes a vote to make it happen. Doing nothing is exactly the cause of petition not helping.

What does that mean, "I call states rights!" There has to be federal regulation in order for your states to determine how they want to proceed with legalization. I'm glad your state and Washington have both legalized it. That was a wake-up call to the government that it needs to s_ _t or get off the pot. It should be regulated under the ATF, just like alcohol, tobacco and guns. Maybe they'll rename it the ATFD.

Very well done post my friend! Ending the War on drugs would help put an end to a War on our citizens, it belittles those who have an addiction and enables cold blooded Capitalist to profit from yet another area in our society that just plain needs the freedom to choose and rehab for those who need it. Many drugs can be properly used for recreation by responsible people, anything can be taken to the extreme and abused. Why isn't there a War on food, and incarceration of anyone 20,30 lbs over weight? Because that would be silly, just as it is silly to make a plant like pot illegal. Too much money to be made by the wrong people in our society, and a waste of valuable resources that could actually be repairing our infrastructure. Thanks again for the post!

M.I.F.,
You asked me to comment so I well.
The thing that gets me, is how some otherwise really good and well intentioned people who post here as well as Americans in general (the road to hell being paved with good intentions) can not-or will not-see the bigger picture, and because of this justified yet myopic fixation on the many issues, refuse to see things as they truly are, refuse to accept, that things by and large have (for at least 30 years) stayed the same or gotten worse.
As far as this nations problems are concerned, just about anything you can name, from the idiotic "war" on drugs, to environmental issues to (the lack of) universal health care to equal pay for equal work to the right relentlessly trying to destroy the public school system to our crumbling infrastructure to hyper cyborg "police" at EVERY fucking protest to "representatives" who don't represent anything but corporate interest to the U.S. being obsessed with empire to.....well, hopefully, you get the point.
All you have to do is one thing, ONE THING get rid of PLUTOCRACY, get rid of that, and all of the "issues" stated above will simply go away, pure and simple.
Here is the organization that can do that.
http://socialistparty-usa.net/index.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE SOCIALIST PARTY strives to establish a radical democracy that places people's lives under their own control -- a non-racist, classless, feminist, socialist society in which people cooperate at work, at home, and in the community.
Socialism is not mere government ownership, a welfare state, or a repressive bureaucracy. Socialism is a new social and economic order in which workers and consumers control production and community residents control their neighborhoods, homes, and schools.
The production of society is used for the benefit of all humanity, not for the private profit of a few. Socialism produces a constantly renewed future by not plundering the resources of the earth.Under capitalist and authoritarian "Communist" states, people have little control over fundamental areas of their lives. The capitalist system forces workers to sell their abilities and skills to the few who own the workplaces, profit from these workers' labor, and use the government to maintain their privileged position. Under authoritarian "Communist" states, decisions are made by Communist Party officials, the bureaucracy and the military. The inevitable product of each system is a class society with gross inequality of privileges, a draining of the productive wealth and goods of the society into military purposes, environmental pollution, and war in which workers are compelled to fight other workers.
People across the world need to cast off the systems which oppress them, and build a new world fit for all humanity. Democratic revolutions are needed to dissolve the power now exercised by the few who control great wealth and the government. By revolution we mean a radical and fundamental change in the structure and quality of economic, political, and personal relations. The building of socialism requires widespread understanding and participation, and will not be achieved by an elite working "on behalf of" the people. The working class is in a key and central position to fight back against the ruling capitalist class and its power. The working class is the major force worldwide that can lead the way to a socialist future – to a real radical democracy from below.
Radical democracy is the cornerstone not only of our socialism, but also of our strategy. Here are the main features of each:Socialist Society
Freedom & Equality
Democratic socialism is a political and economic system with freedom and equality for all, so that people may develop to their fullest potential in harmony with others. The Socialist Party is committed to full freedom of speech, assembly, press, and religion, and to a multi-party system. We are dedicated to the abolition of male supremacy and class society, and to the elimination of all forms of oppression, including those based on race, national origin, age, sexual preferences, and disabling conditions.Production For Use, Not For Profit
In a socialist system the people own and control the means of production and distribution through democratically controlled public agencies, cooperatives, or other collective groups. The primary goal of economic activity is to provide the necessities of life, including food, shelter, health care, education, child care, cultural opportunities, and social services.
These social services include care for the chronically ill, persons with mental disabilities, the infirm and the aging. Planning takes place at the community, regional, and national levels, and is determined democratically with the input of workers, consumers, and the public to be served.Full Employment
Under welfare capitalism, a reserve pool of people is kept undereducated, under-skilled and unemployed, largely along racial and gender lines, to exert pressure on those who are employed and on organized labor. The employed pay for this knife that capitalism holds to their throats by being taxed to fund welfare programs to maintain the unemployed and their children. In this way the working class is divided against itself; those with jobs and those without are separated by resentment and fear. In socialism, full employment is realized for everyone who wants to work.Go to the link above for complete info.

God bless you V for the good/ great ideas you share with humanity. It does my heart good to read them. Some people say that socialism does not work, but I sure have noticed that nothing good gets done when the orders of the day are to be anti-social. It makes me ill to see so much predation and desperate madness. Now today another school shooting of our youngsters by a 21 year old. Likely meth related. If we had a socialist attitude amoung us that made our kids feel valued I think we would have fewer suicide massacre shootings. I would hope people would step up to stop the meth more. Stop the cops and county polititians from dealing as they are dealing meth now. So much emphasis is on makeing a profit at any cost that humanity is ground up under foot more each day. Our present day profit driven society is not healthy. Todays version of profit is not based on production of goods and services, it is just plain theft. I do not choose to be a land based pirate who skewers "clients" for the bosses. Socialism may help us return to some forward motion for the human race. Some thing sorely lacking at this point in time. Socialism is not a contrarian position, but a return to the basics of humanity.

Thank you for the kind words gump. I do not know if the guy was on meth or not, but whatever the reason, anyone would have to be out of their mind to do such a thing.
I have believed for some time, that capitalism/consumerism makes people crazy in many different ways, which is why I do not engage in it, Dec 25th is just another day for us, hope you will check out the SPUSA link.
Take care, and happy Solstice!

It's time to scrap the whole obsolete system. We all belong to the same planet. It does not belong to any one person.

V, you've used a lot of words here, but I was only allowed 800 characters or less in the Petition (which I really hoped you would sign). As far as socialism goes, I've always believed a socialist democracy was the only way to "level the playing field." That said, you will not succeed in convincing everyone that this is the only way to go. They must be spoon fed in small amounts, item by item. The GOP's platform is and always has been similar to the ideals of communism. The few control the many and determine how much the many get. So just spewing your entire theory here will not garner as much support as listing issue by issue and garnering support for each issue as you go. You think you and your members are alone in your thinking? You are not. You should have lived as I did in the 40's and 50's when the word socialism was equal to communism in the public's minds because it was the reporters who led us to believe that. We know better now, but some still believe that. Those are the one's you need to reach, not with hatred but with education and facts. Good luck on your journey.

M.I.F - Thank you for your input, here is my response.
"V, you've used a lot of words here, but I was only allowed 800 characters or less in the Petition (which I really hoped you would sign)."
* I did sign it.
"I've always believed a socialist democracy was the only way to "level the playing field." That said, you will not succeed in convincing everyone that this is the only way to go. They must be spoon fed in small amounts, item by item. "
*Ok, no problem with that.
" The GOP's platform is and always has been similar to the ideals of communism. The few control the many and determine how much the many get."
* Dems are just as guilty (if not even more so) as GOP'ers of what you say, both party's support capitalist and plutocratic interest, it has always been so and will always be so as long as they are in power.
"So just spewing your entire theory here will not garner as much support as listing issue by issue and garnering support for each issue as you go."
* 1) I am not "spewing" anything.
2) "spewing your entire theory" it is not MY theory.3) What I'm saying is not "theory" but economic, social and political fact, born from many years of objective research, it is therefore objective truth.
"You think you and your members are alone in your thinking? You are not. You should have lived as I did in the 40's and 50's when the word socialism was equal to communism in the public's minds because it was the reporters who led us to believe that. We know better now, but some still believe that."
* I have never thought I was alone in my thinking, as far as the 40's 50's mindset about Socialism, (and many other areas of life as well) although I am just 50 years old, I am well aware of the mindset of that time, because I have read and studied great deal about it.
May life's journey be kind to you as well. };-)

Thank you cw. I'm sorry about your brother but I bet there's hardly a family who has not lost a loved one to "illegal" drugs. My own cousin, at 27, blew his brains out on drugs. This was 20 years ago. I also have a niece whose own daughter put her in forced intervention because she just would not quit the cycle of drugs and alcohol. It's so sad.
