Al-Jazeera, the Pan-Arab news channel that has struggled to win space on American cable television, has acquired Current TV, Al Gore confirmed Wednesday.Gore and his partner Joel Hyatt announced the sale in a statement.
"Current Media was built based on a few key goals: To give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling," Gore and Hyatt said.
"Al-Jazeera has the same goals and, like Current, believes that facts and truth lead to a better understanding of the world around us."
The acquisition could extend Al-Jazeera's reach beyond a few large U.S. metropolitan areas, where some people can watch Al-Jazeera English.
Current Media, founded in 2005 by Gore and Hyatt, is available through cable and satellite in 71 million households across the world, according to the company's website. Sixty million of those households are in the United States.

It's all very sad. I'm sure Al Gore just decided it was time to call it quits because of the poor performance of the network. Seemed like it was all ending when Keith suddenly left and then a couple new shows came along but all in all it always felt like nobody had any clue as to how to run the service.
I watched every day and then would jump back to the repeats of stuff on MSNBC that I missed while viewing here. It would be nice if Al Jazeera would keep the existing programming and drop news into it at regular intervals to fill it out.
Al Jazeera has wonderful shows and while the English version is available on Bell ExpressVu for Canadians here in the US DISH only offers the non-English version. Russia Today is also a wonderful channel.
My guess would be that Al Jazeera will drop all of the existing programming and start from scratch. This will be very sad indeed.

Some Progressives don't sound too happy about the sale comparing it to Air America. An interesting tidbit was including in the diary that explains a lot of the decisions by Joel Hyatt over the years
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/01/03/1175889/-Killing-off-Current
"It's too bad that the two highest-profile explicitly liberal media efforts of the last decade—Air America and Current TV—were so brutally mismanaged.
Air America is old news, but yesterday we learned that Current TV was sold to Al Jazeera, as the Qatar-owned news network seeks greater U.S. penetration. Why they think Current's shitty channel access is attractive beats me. They must be getting a hell of a cheap price.
Problem with Current was that its CEO, Joel Hyatt (from Hyatt Legal Services, also known as the asshole who fired an attorney with AIDS which became the movie Philadelphia), never cared about building a popular network. You could see this with their lack of promotion, with their signing of shitty distribution deals that prohibited them from posting anything of real value on the web
So yet another "liberal" media operation collapses due to mismanagement, and yet again people will say that progressive media won't work. But MSNBC's prime-time lineup argues otherwise. Too bad no one has made that kind of investment for a truly 100 percent top-to-bottom progressive effort. There's space for it."

Having read what I take to be the complete text of the statement from Joel Hyatt (and Al Gore?) I was struck by one thing. I did not see any mention of the employees of Current, or the on air talent they recruited to deliver the programming they wanted to provide. No thanks for or acknowledgement of the efforts of anyone but themselves; and how proud THEY are of what THEY accomplished in putting together the sale to the wonderful folks as Al Jazeera.
It was a statement that in tone if not in all specifics of content could have been written by Mitt Romney.
I'm sure Al Gore and Joel Hyatt were trying to do something good when they started Current. Sadly, the elites of the left and the right both seem to live in some detached world where regular folks are just characters in their private Reality Shows. We are all best not to forget that. EVER!

I really hate to see Al Gore have to give up Current. I am pretty sure that the organization is near and dear to his heart.
I know that he will continue to leave his mark on mankind, and go on to do even greater things.
He will most certainly be missed here at Current.

There was a small mess with the Muslim Brotherhood in 1996!
Major global media have been reporting on the Al Jazeera coverage of the Gaza crisis while omitting the Muslim Brotherhood and possible Hamas background of Wadah Khanfar (aka Waddah Khanfar), the station’s General Manager. In October 2006, one of Al Jazeera’s own correspondents stated that Mr. Khanfar had a Muslim Brotherhood background and asked him about it directly, receiving a non-denial and evasive reply
( http://globalmbreport.org/?p=1278 )
But!
The pan-Arabic network al-Jazeera is based in and funded by Qatar, a stronghold for the Muslim Brotherhood."They are twisting, they are distorting and we know very well that they are under a very heavy influence of the Muslim Brothers," Mazel added. "The director general of al-Jazeera, Wadah Khanfar is a Muslim Brother."
Many believed the demonstrators have legitimate grievances and a significant number don't support the Muslim Brotherhood.
However, according to Mazel, an Arabic speaker, al Jazeera isn't just reporting the possible overthrow of Mubarak, they've encouraged his overthrow in order to aid the Muslim Brotherhood.
"This is for me, not journalism," he said. "It's not freedom of press. It is a weapon in the service of Muslim Brothers. It's very bad."

Al Jazeera TV has stood up on news reporting.
I see that as good. I don't like secret knowledge like in the past.
All it does is make the uneducated go nuts & burn down your knowledge,
over something like a tax on a door knob!
Secret knowledge never works, over & over in the past!( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Jazeera )
( http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2013/01/2013132255769130.html )The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The station gained worldwide attention following the outbreak of war in Afghanistan, when it was the only channel to cover the war live, from its office there.
In the 2000s, the network was praised by the Index on Censorship for circumventing censorship and contributing to the free exchange of information in the Arab world, and by the Webby Awards, who nominated it as one of the five best news web sites, along with BBC News, National Geographic and The Smoking Gun. It was also voted by brandchannel.com readers as the fifth most influential global brand behind Apple, Google, Ikea and Starbucks. In 2011 Salon.com noted Al Jazeera's coverage of the 2011 Egyptian protests as superior to that of the American news media, while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also opined that the network's news coverage was more informative, and less opinion-driven than American journalism.
But!!!
I have noticed on here on the website I did a WHOIS on my connection.
And I ended up with a point to. al-saddclub.com from the trace.
It is strange, as now Current is a part of Al Jazeera. There is a issue with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Exactly, cpad. I will be here 2 years in February and this board has changed so much it's unreal. Indeed there is "someone behind the curtain." It doesn't surprise me that Al Gore sold Current and personally, I think Current wants to get rid of the community. That's why the trolls have been allowed to stay. I'm with you Vic. Russia has taken a slew of bad hits from the American press propaganda machine, as well as blame for wars that can actually be traced back to the White House steps. Russia is a more democratic society than we are. And RT definitely delivers more iron-clad facts than any of our own media. It was interesting to note this morning on the Bill Press show as well as Stephanie Miller, that they were basically silent on the sale of Current. There was nothing mentioned last night either on The War Room, or Viewpoint or the other shows in Current TV. Strangely enough I did hear it reported on my local ABC channel, along with the weather report and reports of break-ins and car car accidents.
