Last minute farm bill screws sustainable agriculture

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) calls the deal — which will provide $5 billion dollars in subsidies to industrial-scale corn, soy, and wheat farmers while short-changing local food, organics, and beginning farmers, and decimating on-farm conservation efforts — “deeply flawed.” The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), meanwhile, has referred to it as “blatantly anti-reform,” while the Union of Concerned Scientists calls it “a giant step backward” and “a blow to farmers who want to grow healthy foods and the consumers who want to buy them.” The National Young Farmers Coalition was also “incredibly disappointed with the results.”

Even Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D- Mich.), who led the Senate Agriculture committee to pass their own farm bill last summer, but wasn’t involved in Tuesday’s final negotiations, has characterized the bill as a “partial extension that reforms nothing, provides no deficit reduction, and hurts many areas of our agriculture economy.”

    • There no reason to do things the right when they pay so well to do it the WRONG way. To save this country we must fix the lobbying problem. Failure to do so will condemn every effort to fix this country. All that money to subvert the government guarantees that "WE THE PEOPLE" are irrelevant.

    • All of the prior comments are right on target. The fact that it's agriculture and food is irrelevant to those who voted for it. It's simply part and parcel, and symptomatic of Congress helping to transfer as much public wealth into a few corporate hands as possible. Our government has demonstrated that it believes in aristocracy of money, and they are scratching and clawing their way into it, by giving our money away to corporations. They consider that their membership fee into the aristocracy, and know that they will be taken care of once they've paid the "steal from the public" dues. Every legislator who facilitated these crimes are traitors to America, American citizens and democracy. Congress is helping to destroy democracy, and they deserve to be tried and punished for treason.

    • I watch RT for news. There was an interview involving three people and I was paying no real attention to it. Until they wrapped up and one man made the remark that the American elected officials did not care about the people, they only cared about their own personal agendas. The other people nodded their heads in agreement. I don't know where he was from.
What the American senate and congress care about is what the corporations tell them to, and pay them for. We the people are not included.
And what is more....we continue to vote for people, in a naive view that they will do what they say they will. So where to go from here? Another country perhaps?

    • Currently both parties are undermining the freedom and constitutional rights granted by the United States Constitution. Its time to take our country back from these corrupt, greedy, robber barons. They are all nothing but a den of thieves!!!! These officials need to be held accountable, their bribe money seized, citizenship stripped, and our country restored to one that is of the people and for the people. No more party affiliation crap. They are all bought and paid for by the same Wealthy elitists and Corporations pulling the strings. When WE THE PEOPLE finally WAKE-UP only then can their be true change! Go to the following link and pass it everywhere!!!! http://wh.gov/Um94
