Wow, the French march into Mali and the terrorists just "melted away." Of course they did.
" A column of French and Malian armored personnel carriers and supply trucks moved north into the central Malian town of Diabaly early on Monday after the Islamist rebels who were controlling it melted away, security sources said."

Very well thought out piece on AFRICOM and the case for dismantling it.
We have seen this same MO decade after decade regardless of the US leader or their party. This is not the way to true peace, education or freedom.
This isn't just a "left" issue, it is a human issue. People on either side who dismiss this just because they are partisan only aid in bringing these policies to light.
____
Excerpt:
(Page 9 of 16)opinion
Was this a case for or against AFRICOM?
"There was a spirited question and answer session. The first question related to the importance of oil from Africa. The questioner told the audience that it was necessary to grasp the conjuncture why there was the deployment of the US Africa Command at this time. It was brought to the attention of the colloquium that up to 25 per cent of the petroleum needs of the United States were supplied by Africa and that Africa was now more important than the Middle East in the supply of oil. The speaker from the floor then drew attention to how the United States was a major weapons supplier to Africa and that these weapons undermined the stability of Africa. The point was made that there was near universal opposition in Africa to the hosting of AFRICOM and that there was only one state, Liberia, that offered to host AFRICOM. The speaker made references to the plunder of resources in eastern Congo and the relationships between the US military and the militaries in Rwanda and Uganda. There was then reference to the major land grab in Africa and why a conference on governance, peace and security should devote more time to the issue of land grab.
Carter Ham stated that the US military was not an independent actor in Africa, that the actions were guided by the Secretary of Defense and the president. He pointed out that there was a very deliberative process in the Department of Defense. The Africa Command did not provide weapons to governments. That weapons transfers came under the purview of the Department of State. There was a process of background checks before the US government provides weapons. These background checks were carried out by the Department of State. He noted that the US military provided training and equipment and the US reserved the right to monitor how training and weapons are applied. "Is it failsafe? No. Is it in accordance with laws and standards - yes." The military was not operating as an independent actor in Africa. "We are one small part of US effort. If we look at US spending in Africa -- military is dwarfed; most US spending is in health, education and agriculture. That reflects our values. We invest in human capital."
These last words in the mind of this author were the clearest argument for the dismantling of AFRICOM and this author said so in his question to the general. If the United States and its government were serious about investment in human capital, then the present dominance of the military over aid and education ventures would be reversed."

I'm sorry if I misunderstand, but if our non military aid dwarfs military aid, how is that an argument that we are trying to take over? Is the argument that we are weakening the position of AFRICOM by providing so much aid?

Well it isn't just this administration. AFRICOM is a Bush /Cheney plan that is now going to be implemented in Africa.

Reminds me of when people were whining bullshit about our motivations in Libya. WWH seems to be the left's equivalent of Newsmax, only less sinister and more naive. Mali has a serious problem and the people there want French forces to drive out the Islamist.

BrushwithDeathToothpaste:
Mali has a problem now because a coup in the south led coincidentally by a US trained Malian army leader left a power vacuum that allowed for these elements to enter the Tuareg region up North. That was the same scenario in Libya and in fact that is where these supposed terrorists came from because that was handled so badly. Sounds familiar. Were people also "whining bullshit" about Iraq wrong? Polls then showed a majority actually believed that Saddam Hussein attacked us on 9.11 because they fell for the same government spin. They got that war to take the oil and water because of the same attitude and "al qaeda" also followed after that vacuum. It does seem to be a pattern and a very convenient excuse to gain access to any country deemed necessary to fulfill a geopolitical /economic agenda.
We are at a crossroads on this planet regarding peak oil, peak water, minerals, forests and there is competition in Africa namely China in getting to it.. Agribusiness has already staked its claim in Mail and landgrabs that are pushing millions off their land are epidemic in Africa. Matter of fact, Obama gave his blessing to Monsanto to do just that at the G8 last year. Just look at all the countries now vying for the resources and minerals in the Arctic as well as they allow it to melt... So do you know what really happened to the Great Manmade River Project in Libya? The gold? This is why it is so important for the American people to be informed. I know, I know, Obama is president now so everything is for a good purpose...Drones spread flower seeds and everything is beautiful...

Iraq was not whining bullshit. I opposed in the invasion as well as the president, before the invasion took place. I was called a terrorist sympathizer and unpatriotic for my outspoken views on the subject.
Mali is not being invaded for its resources. Libya was not invaded for its resources. If we wanted Libya's resources we would have been better off supporting Qaddafi. I feel that now any military action that is undertaken is always met with complaints of ulterior motives and the domination of a new corporate world order. I do not agree that is always the case. In this case I think foreign intervention is required because Mali is falling apart and their own security forces are woefully inadequate to protect the region from becoming a resource for religious fundamentalist terrorists. Even the Mali people do not want this. I would rather have Western powers aiding Mali rather than let it fall into chaos or having China take it over.

No. Why would I need to? Mali is under attack from within, the Europeans are assisting in trying to bring stability. Last time I checked, the burden of proof rests with the conspiracy theorists. How am I suppose to prove that a secret cabal of governments and evil corporations is NOT invading Mali for its resources? Sorry if an article from WWH doesn't sway me.

I am not a conspiracy theorist. Is that always the failsafe response for someone who doesn't want to answer a question here? You stated that as fact. You should be able to back it up. And I'm not talking in relation to the article posted here, but the information I posted here and above.

"Zeller said Africa represents the world's next economic growth area, and terrorists must not be allowed to establish a base, as they have in Mali's north.
"Clearly we also think Africa is the future of the world economy and that's very important. And we all know how important Mali is in the neighbourhood for natural resources and also its proper development."

Germany demanded its gold back from France earlier this week. Germany also demanded delivery of its gold back from the New York Fed.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/afontevecchia/2013/01/16/germany-repatriating-gold-f...
Problem is France and the Fed, don't have it or if its in their possession it's been Rehypothecated (illegally lent out ) numerous times to people who didn't know it belonged to Germany.
Hmm.. What is Mali's second largest export?
From the Republic of Mali's website http://ambamali-jp.org/en/e03-02.html
"Gold now boasts the second largest export earnings after cotton, gold export being a key industry supporting the Malian economy." "Recent discoveries of new gold deposits have resulted in Mali's gold production increasing four-fold over the past five years."
Don't be surprised when the U.S. "liberates" Iran's gold to make good on shipment's to Germany.
