    • Cornell West can't explain anything about Obama, he doesn't even know him, and has never tried. He and Travis Smalley are very jealous men, and haven't done one great thing in their lives. Obama didn't get there alone. These two didn’t run for office. They didn’t fight for votes. They just sit on their butts and whine and moan about how the world isn’t the way they want it to be. If they are so fired up, DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN WHINE LIKE PETULANT CHILDREN. Just the complaining and whining they do makes me wonder how they got to be “so relevant”. He doesn't speak for Martin Luther King

So let me ask you. Are you Okay with Obama breaking his promise on the following: Patriot act, FISA, NDAA, Universal mandate, closing gitmo, entering in foreign conflicts without congressional approval in violation of the war powers act, prosecuting whistle blowers, Transparency in government, extrajudicial killings of U.S. citizens, raising taxes on those making less than 250k/year, attempting to extend the Bush draw down date in Iraq, executive orders, extending the Bush tax cuts, and the public option? Mind you all of the above are broken campaign promises by Obama.

    • I applaud AmericanStandard for pointing out that more needs to be done by the government to balance out the inequality in our society. Since Congress is the biggest obstacle to these reforms, perhaps we all need to step up the fight in the midterm elections.

As far as his criticism of the president, I think he is overly naive about the power of the executive office, and little too self righteous on what Dr. King would say today.

I don't expect Obama to come in and change things overnight. I just wish he would have tried to stick to his campaign promises in 2008. If you try your damnedest to get things done but you are unable, I understand. That is not what happened in my opinion. I feel like Obama backpedaled on many of his promises as I noted above. He ran as a progressive and he is a moderate republican at best. When he passed the universal mandate people were criticizing the "Stupid GOP, they are objecting to policies that they wrote those stupid neckbeards!" Why was no one asking why our progressive president was passing Republican policy. No one asked why the deal was made behind closed doors with big Pharma and the insurance companies. No one asks why Obama didn't even mention the public option which polls nationally at 70+%. He had a supermajority in the house and a majority in the Senate. You are telling me that the public option wouldn't have had plenty of support when compared to the universal mandate? If you answered yes you are out of your mind.

    • I heard that the King family asked the President and Chief Justice to sign the bible...If that's true that's all that matters, if the family felt this way, they wouldn't have allowed the President to use it.....

President Obama never made himself out to be the next MLK, other people put that on him...The president doesn't pay Mr. West or Tavis Smiley any mind and i think that bothers them more than anything....

I'm no blind Obama supporter...Mr West has every right to disagree with the President just like anyone does

Yeah they did. I am not a fan of Obama but I would do the same thing if given the chance, or if MLK was my pops. It is a pretty high honor even if you don't agree with Obama's politics. I mean if the president asks you to do something like that 9.9/10 people are going to say "Hell yeah."

    • I have always admired/respected Dr Cornell West who I think is a brilliant man, however, he has a severe case of the Obama derangement syndrome, brought on by envy and an over bloated ego. His resentment of him dates back to 07 long before, then Senator Obama won his first term as president.
West does himself a disservice, by appearing to be obsessed with his over the top critiques of President Obama.
The unnecessary name calling by West, in reference to the president puts him in the category of an ordinary HATER!
He has lost the respect of many of his peers and fellow Americans.

Please don't get it twisted. Although I disagree with the way that Dr West chooses to critique President Obama, I identify with his philosophy. I feel like it is undignified of him to stoop to this level of name calling. It is very unbecoming for a man of his statue. On the other hand. I don't buy into the rhetoric of a Libertarian hater.

Dr.West, leave him alone and let him do his job!

    • With all due respect to Dr. West, whom I've read and enjoyed for some time, President Obama has as much right to put his hand on that Bible, given Dr. King's family's permission, as does Dr. West to criticize him for it. I think it most appropriate that both Lincoln's and King's Bibles were used for the swearing in, if for no other reason than as inspiration/aspiration to President Obama and showing honor to those two great denizens of history.

I understand why it was done. The point is that Obama has continued the same foreign policy that has been taken over the last 50 years. Obama is no Lincoln or MLK. He is bush squared.

I am genuinely not attempting to "bash Obama". I do not think he was the best choice for president, but I think Romney was by far a worse choice. That said I do not think it is fair that no one calls Obama on his Shit like we did with bush. If you cant criticize your own party than perhaps you need to consider free thinking. In any case I am simply saying that, If it were your dad, and the president wanted to get inaugurated on his bible, do you not think you may have a bit of conflict of interest?

I heard this yesterday too, and am glad you mentioned it here.
While I respect and sometimes agree with Dr. West, he and other critics expected Obama to "be" MLK - to act out the well of anger, embraced in "Black Liberation Theology" as practised by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. That "brand" speaks out very strongly against racism, it's full of anger, very anti-white-establishment - which Obama simply cannot "do." He wouldn't have lasted one day if he'd come across as an "angry black man."
However, I do respect that there is room for this side to be heard too. There is room for criticism, lots of room. And there's a time for healing, and coming together.
I was happy to hear that the King family asked that President Obama and Chief Justice Roberts sign the Family Bible. That act of 'permission' represents a warm embrace within a larger "family."

No he is not expecting Obama to "Be" MLK as those are huge shoes for any man, let alone a politician to fill. What West is saying is that if you are gonna swear on MLKs bible as a photo Op it cheapens MLK's legacy when you do not confront the issues which MLK championed. The issues West is bringing up are not "Black Liberation Theology" they are issues with bipartisan support which could pass such as a Public option, non interventionism, non imperialism, reduced military spending, improved social services, civil liberties, social equality, ect.

Damn straight! Targeted drone strikes that don't kill children -- evidently he thinks we are seriously stupid! Bush-dark has children -- how in the name of everything that's holy could he convince himself that drones that kill children don't really count? How can he get up every morning and look at himself in the mirror KNOWING he has done NOTHING to relieve the plight of way too many starving and homeless children on HIS watch? How can he insult everything MLK stood for by using that man's Bible for his swearing-in?

    • Cornel may agree with me completely:

The dire warnings of President Eisenhower on the future of liberty in a civilization ruled by the collusion of the Military- Industrial- Energy Government-Media –-Police has evolved out of the Bilderberg conference in 1954 and grown into the “New World Order”. This reality of geo-politics is arguably and without bias based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a fictional account of a plot by world Jewry to conquer the world. This blueprint for a global Fascist totalitarian dictatorship, has been “ inspired” and adopted by the powers of the world as a perfect model for their own desires to accomplish the same ends, Global Hegemony. This “ One World Power “ struggle is nearing the final stages of implementation in 2012. America is under siege from within the State houses and Congress, in league with the global corporate aristocracy.

The Kings of today are Multi-National Corporations, Politicians, Globalist Financial Dynasties, Wall Street Criminals, Lobbyists and their funded “think tanks” and foundations which manufacture false public opinion, and engineer the fabric of society to achieve their own political and economic objectives, without regard for the best interests of civilization.
It is time for citizens to pay attention to the details of everyday legislative activities and to voice their vehement opposition. The cost of silence to freedom is tyranny.

Remember the German people turned a blind eye to the actions of the Nazis, out of fear and indifference, and look what blind faith enabled them to accomplish. We face a situation not unlike that of Germany in the 1930’s. These same military-industrial Aristocracies have invaded the American political system and undertaken in their own right, in collusion with Our American Congress, for their own benefit as individuals, using their power to legislate industry and control the media, have so aligned their agendas to deceive , divide and conquer their greatest enemies, The free will of the citizens of America.
FACT: The wealth of America is controlled by 1/10th of 1% of the Global Corporate Aristocracy, the multi-national corporations that do not pay taxes, this includes individuals such as Mitt Romney and Warren Buffet, The Heirs to Wal Mart, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, The Koch Dynasty , Rupert Murdoch, Exxon Mobil, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, General Electric, Boeing, The British, Saudi, and American Royal families, etc.
      Is This TREASON ?

"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty—power is ever stealing from the many to the few…. The hand entrusted with power becomes … the necessary enemy of the people. Only by continual oversight can the democrat in office be prevented from hardening into a despot: only by unintermitted Agitation can a people be kept sufficiently awake to principle not to let liberty be smothered in material prosperity."
-- Wendell Phillips, speech in Boston, Massachusetts, January 28, 1852
