A Houston waiter made the news this week when he refused to serve a gentleman and his family for mocking a special needs child. Michael Garcia, who works at downtown restaurant Laurenzo’s, was attending to Kim Castillo and her 5-year-old son Milo, who has Down syndrome. Milo was apparently being a bit boisterous, and a family at a nearby table moved to the back of the restaurant. As the group walked away, Garcia could hear the father saying, “Special needs children need to be special somewhere else.” When Garcia approached the family, he told them he couldn’t wait on them, so they left. Garcia’s bosses were totally supportive of his decision, and Castillo was shocked and thrilled that someone took the time to stand up for her sonhttp://www.babble.com/mom/waiter-refuses-to-serve-family-for-mocking-special-nee...

I would have preferred a dialog with the ill-informed customer. There is something about curtailing free speech that always bothers me, even when it is insanely offensive and ignorant. I might have handled it a little differently because there is usually something glaringly obvious about people that make offensive statements that someone with a little wit can point out.
Generally something like, "people with no fashion sense should dine at McDonalds." When the offending party gets offended just say, "Milo just wanted me to make that observation, can I take your order?"

As is so often said any sense of decency and civility disappears in "merica". I bet, just bet the persons who were being so disgraceful were of the "upper classes", their feelings of (self)righteous entitlement were being infringed on!

My niece who has autism, is more well-behaved, than that family who mocked that child with special needs.

Proud he stood up, spoke up and management supported him. We lost good manners a long time ago, now we're headed towards losing all civility. Great story!

I eat at this place from time to time I will from now on be asked to be seated in Michael Garcia's section. I am very glad he REFUSED service to these bums! What kind of a POS says such a thing about a handicapped Child? It is because of people like this raising warped children we have so much violence!

Now that you said that be great to hear I mean read him here. Even if it is just " You are all welcome". He's probably too busy doing good deeds to have the time to sign up & comment.
