Updated: Northeast braces for possible winter "blockbuster"-could break records

A winter storm heading for the Northeast could bring major snowfall to upstate New York and New England on Friday and into the weekend – but forecasts are divided on its potential impact.

A clipper from the north is expected to combine with a rainy storm moving through the South to create a snowstorm for many parts of the region late Friday and Saturday, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth.

However, there is still some uncertainty on exactly where and when the two systems combine, he said.

For cities such as Boston, the changing forecast could mean the difference between an icy nuisance and a major winter storm that would dump up to 2 feet of snow, bringing widespread disruption.

“The European model, which is the generally the best model we have, has continued to insist there is going to be this really big storm but the other models are not bullish on it at all,” the Weather Channel’s Carl Parker said. “The difference is -- will it be a blockbuster for places like Boston?”

The last time Boston had one foot of snow was in January 2011.

Most of the I-95 corridor is already set for heavy rain on Friday.

Under the European model, the whole region would see significant snow but up to 2 feet would be dumped on Massachusetts – including Boston – and southern Maine overnight Friday.

That level of snow is “potentially life-threatening,” the Weather Channel’s Chris Warren warned.

However, other U.S. models show the two systems combining further to the east, meaning there would still be heavy snow in northern New England but cities such as Boston could receive as little as 2 inches.

    • Many people think they know what "racist" means but one definition that is usually forgotten is where a person LOVES BLACKS who are real:real:dark:Black with flared nostrils like in Africa or on many small islands, the Blacks who look closer to supposed monkey ancestors than Whites. They LOVE those Blacks because the difference value makes them look closer to evolutionary roots. Kunta Kinte and all that. But when Blacks stand erect and talk like Whites that's when they show themselves a true racist. That's one reason why Martin Luther King offended them. MLK wasn't a dishwasher like they like Blacks to be. MLK talked smart, undoubtedly had a very high IQ so he had to be offed.

I have narrow nostrils and have always had difficulty getting enough oxygen to breathe, so I was not able to run long distances, because of inherited narrow nasal passages. I happen to HIGHLY ADMIRE AFRICAN BLACKS WITH WIDE NOSTRILS. They had super deep voices, such as Nat King Cole for instance and also in fact his daughter who was also a fine singer!!!

So when I see "browner" Blacks getting the shaft from anyone who is White and claims not to be a racist I know what the truth is in that area. When I was a teenager and began studying the Bible in earnest someone didn't like it, perhaps a neighbor, so they threw a flyer in my yard. It had a picture of a Black woman who looked very evoultionary away from White features. This person was wanting to set me straight concerning Equality.

Didn't work. But what did happen was I was put on a Blacklist and all future White employers underpaid me and harmed my family. Partly also perhaps because I was Part Native American. So even tho I was White of skin I lived as an outcast and was treated like I had just come over in a boat from Africa my own self. I am able to see Racism in its rawest form.

Jesus will straighten these "closet racists" out soon, while I and my fellow believers who see Blacks as great people to have around ~not just write about the ones on distant islands they can still think of as "Negroes"~ will be gone from the face of this planet forever. Blacks gives this place color!!! Without them your TV's would go back to having all White people. HAHAHAHA I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS TOO.

I understand you living in this area makes this storm extra important but there's a Severe Warning in Texas moving across towards Louisiana that looks like Death Itself. It really looks bad on the weather maps. Your snows might not kill many people but having a swath of tornadoes sweeeping across the entire Southern Tier States will.

Down there they are next to the heat & moisture source. Take a look and see what you think. It looks worse than the North Atlantic storm that vanished.

No "catigation" intended but, you should keep things more in a proper perspective!!! Texans are going to DIE not have a little power outage inconvenience. The storm in the South dwarfs that piddling little snow you're having this weekend.

You've really shown an underside no one suspected when you make umpteen posts for tiny ISLANDS but comes to Texas your finger can't leave the mouse!!! You're giving the finger to Texans, Louisianans, Mississippians, and the entire South.

That's why they never was able to Rise Again for Northerners like you keeping them down.

    • Well from the last forecast I heard, we are said to be getting between 14 to 18 inches here with high winds. Right now though it is just raining but schools have already been dismissed in anticipation of it starting around 5pm. Some parts of New England are now expecting three feet and the Weather Channel states there is another behind it already in the Rockies. I hope all in this area remain safe.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News
Updated at 12:18 p.m. ET: A crippling and potentially historic winter storm barreled toward the Northeast on Thursday, threatening tens of millions of people with 2 feet of snow. Airlines encouraged fliers to change their plans and get out of the way.

By mid-morning, there were delays of more than two hours at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, where tangles can snarl air traffic across the country. Major airlines waived fees to change flights, which run up to $150.

The culprits were a so-called clipper system moving through the Upper Midwest and a low-pressure system headed for the waters off New England. When they converge, probably late Friday, they are expected to sock the region with its heaviest snow in at least two years.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard watch for parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Long Island and said travel there could become nearly impossible.

“You’re going to see some really significant snow totals,” said Tom Niziol, a meteorologist for The Weather Channel. “This is something we haven’t seen in a while, particularly in New England.”

Full coverage from The Weather Channel

Forecasts called for as much as 9 inches of snow across central Michigan, a foot and a half in the Hudson Valley region of New York, and 2 feet or more across coastal New England. Possible hurricane-force winds off Massachusetts and Rhode Island also made flooding a threat.

In Boston, the storm had the potential to take out century-old records. The city’s biggest snowstorms since 1892 were a 27.5-inch blast in February 2003 and a 27.1-inch dumping exactly 35 years ago, in 1978. Mayor Thomas Menino closed city schools for Friday and pleaded for common sense.

“Stay off the streets of our city,” he said. “Basically, stay home.”

Light to moderate snow is expected to spread through the Great Lakes on Thursday and could reach as far east as parts of New England and New York City by Thursday night, according to forecasters for The Weather Channel.

This gives a day to day update so you can be prepared if you liive in these areas.
      _____
"Notorious Time for East Coast Storms

There's just something about February when it comes to winter storms.

Over the past few years we've had the following:

      •South/Midwest "Groundhog Blizzard" of 2011

      •"Snowmageddon" in the East 2010/

•New York City Central Park's snowstorm of record (26.9" in Feb. 11-12, 2006)

Of course, any area of low pressure forecast to intensify in the Midwest or along the East Coast garners our attention. This is particularly the case in February!"
      ______
With at least 4% added moisture in the atmosphere as well as more energy from melting ice in the Arctic and Greenland we need to watch all of these fronts.

Well looking at this it may be more North of where I am though you never know anymore and we will get something. I just hope the model that predicted Sandy (the European) is wrong in this case. But yes, I feel sorry for NY state and of course it has been cold here with people still without housing in the shore areas.

Would like to know how it went in Vermont. I assume you are going to the ski slopes. I used to have a pass to Pico which is near Killington. Actually kept ski boots, pants, and skis in my car, lived 10 minutes to the parking lot.
