Snopes Got Snoped

Image

It is run by a husband and wife team - that's right, no big office of investigators scouring public records in Washington, no researchers studying historical stacks in libraries, no team of lawyers reaching a consensus on current caselaw. No, Snopes.com is just a mom-and-pop operation that was started by two people who have absolutely no formal background or experience in investigative research. http://worldtruth.tv/snopes-got-snoped/

    • Snopes is a prime example of the axiom about people repeating things over and over until everyone else believes it to true.

      As in "according to Snopes"
      "Debunked on Snopes"

Do you have issues with their credibility? So far the biggest complaint I've seen on this thread is that they are a Mom & Pop team. Can you point out a specific instance on Snopes that is incorrect, unsubstantiated, or intentially misleading?

    • That's the best they got? An unrelated ad hominem attack?

Do they consider *themselves* to be researchers, lawyers or professional journalists by contrast?

That's the dumbest thing about this fallacious attack, they're just as much a "mom and pop" operation. It's not like most people providing valuable content on the internet are PhD professionals getting paid the mega-bucks.

    • Critiquing a rumor mill.....?

Looks it's bad enough to come here and see the random clique takeovers, and the all out distraction offered up by those who would rather us lap up mindless drivel.....

But to attack a website whose catch phrase is "rumor has it"........

Really, I think they just let this one get popular to further discredit you, well played submitter well played....

    • Using "World Truth TV" as a credible reporting source while bitching about Snopes is quite amusing. Not only are they looking for donations but they also have advertisers such as HP and Sony. Articles referring to the Illuminati and how the body can cure cancer all by itself really adds to the bullshit aroma. This site makes infowars look the BBC.

Keep up the good work guys.

    • Yes it is a husband and wife team and that is not news. What is interesting is that they are questioned because they indicated that Bud Gregg's sign is inconsistent with State Farm policies and that it was taken down. The sign is inconsistent with their policy and was taken down.

So where is the falsehood exactly?

I think the real the issue is that this site, among many others, has been used to shoot so many holes through tin foil hats worn by the conspiracy theorists on this site. The irony of pointing out something true on one of these sites only adds to the humor of the situation.

+'d, but ya wouldn't know it cuz the negatory birds are pecking at comments that are factual.

Snopes has NEVER hidden the fact that it's a mom & pop (and some other help from time to time) operation. And they have always striven to get the real skinny on questions posed to them. One supposes the right wing hates snopes and wants to marginalize it because it's been proven that the RW talkers are often not using facts, just talking points. They must hate debunkers.

Heaven forbid ordinary people use the internet and their brains and common sense to figure stuff out. What were these snopesters thinking? That they could think for themselves? The very idea.

    • Snopes cites everything pretty well. That is why they are trusted, their info is easily verifiable. The person seems to be as buttmad as the founder of conservapedia due to the super liberal thing known as facts.

True, it doesn't necessarily mean they are wrong. It's just the same as you and me running a website and posting things on the internet, which we could be right or wrong. I don't read it regularly, but from when I've seen it cited here it seemed to be held out in manner that would give a reader the impression the site was a big outfit with an on staff team of research attorneys and not a mom and pop shop. I am guessing the website itself clearly represents itself. I am just commenting based on the impression gleaned from certain posters here that oftentimes included "snopes" as the sole support for their arguments.

You are right they can be correct or incorrect, but just as with many other things on the internet a heightened level of scrutiny applies.

I have received plenty of emails from people claiming there is a computer virus that will cause your hard drive to "burn up". These always ended with "verified by Snopes". After the fourth one, I began to consider Snopes the equivalent of BS. I am sure they have been correct about some things but I would never consider "verified by Snopes" an indicator of truth.

got some of those myself. Being from Missouri, I went to snopes to see if they had indeed verified. No, not one of claims in such emails II received with that tag had been listed on snopes as true.

I don't just take snopes word on stuff, but I do use it as a resource. They generally cite the sources they use for many of their responses.

And their forums are more fun than dealing with trolls on many of the news or political comment forums. Much more fun indeed.

Trolls get bounce fast from there, if they dare show up. Good behavior is demanded. Another reason to kick back there from time to time. What I meant was it was more fun there that dealing with trolls here, huff post, TPM, and so on.

Trolls at snopes,,,, Never encountered one. Sure, differing opinions, but actual troll behavior? Nope, have never seen it there. Admittedly, I am not around anywhere much anymore, but it seems they have a zero tolerance for uncivil behavior there. Respectfully interacting is good.
