Chinese Online Role-Playing Game Bans “Transexual” Players

This may seem niche, but the only reason the company felt the need to ban since tons of online gamers like to play avatars of the opposite gender, both in the West and in China. Also notice that the Chinese aren’t too concerned about women playing men, but only about men playing women (latent homophobia/gender insistence?), and making them prove their gender through a webcam photo (obviously almost laughably easy to fake, but who cares...). What’s next; can I be fined for playing Mrs. Peacock in a friendly game of Clue?

    • i think the line between video games and reality is definitely starting to blur for a lot of people, both gamers and companies. the economy of any one of these "games" is as busy as a small country; how crazy is that?

    • The idea of gender-bending in the online space is pretty interesting. People create an identity for themselves that may or may not be at all related to their offline identity...and this has been going on since the early days of chat rooms.
