Media: "Will Smith says 'Hitler was a good person'"

Will Smith has stunned the world by declaring that even Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was essentially a "good" person.

The Men In Black star, 39, is determined to see the best in people, and is convinced the former German leader did not fully understand the extent of the pain and suffering his actions would cause during his time in power in the 1930s and '40s. ...

    • Well Adolf Hitler did give the world the Volkswagon!

      Doesn't that square everything? :)

I think Will had good intentions and it didn't translate well to print is all.

    • I read the same thing, he's just the man like, why would he disrepect all the people that lost their lives to something like that. but he's the man officially.

    • apparently, the original mistake was made by the writer for a Scottish newspaper who claimed that Smith believed everyone was essentially good.

But Smith didnt say that, nor did he say that Hitler himself was a good person. he said Adolf Hitler probably believed that what he was doing was good.

case closed let's move on. Will Smith is a good person!

    • a modern day corollary is G.W.Bush -

Bush is responsible for the deaths of 655,000 people so far, and he doesnt want to stop. But remember, it's GOD he talks to, not SATAN.

    • Hilter essentially did what he did in the name of vengeance. He had a bone to pick the world after the Versaille Treaty which demanded all sorts of reparations from Germany after WWI. He'd also been gassed himself. Vengeance, he thought, was justified. jusice is fair, fair is good.

as Will Smith points out, it's a "twisted, backward logic" - but it was not intentionally evil. it was just hate-based.

    • If Will Smith did not say that, I would not put it in quotes, not even single ones. that would be inaccurate.

I'm with Sagacious... "no one makes a declaration in the name of evil before setting off on a course of action." well put, Sag.

    • To have a headline that says "Smith: 'Hitler was a good person'" is TERRIBLE journalism. He said nothing of the sort, and putting the words in quote marks makes it appear that this is exactly what he said which is NOT the case.

He was discussing his belief that people are generally good and said,

"Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'Let me do the most evil thing I can do today'.I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good'. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming."

A far cry from saying "Hitler was a good person"

    • Hitler, like each of us, was a multi-faceted individual who did with his life what he chose. No matter how he "started out", we know how he ended up. He saw little or no value in human life, and extinguished it with less concern than one would afford a rat. Also, Hitler was not a vegetarian. I do not consider someone who eats only certain meat dishes, or meat occasionally, to be vegetarian...Period. If you are vegetarian, you don't eat muscle tissue, from any animal. If you are Vegan, you don't eat any animal products in any form. Yes there are variations, but Hitler did not fit into any form of vegetarianism. Because of stomach ailments, he began eating meat sparingly, but was not ever a strict vegetarian. While we're discussing vegetarianism ------> " learned in my sociology class that Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian and loved the company of women, children and dogs. And vegetarians say that eating meat makes you aggressive and pushy, while eating veggies and fruits makes you feel relaxed and at peace." Who the HELL said that FURRYJEN? Honestly, I have been to the ORG. I have worked with many die hard scientologists, as I was a clinical nutritionist in a medical center that ran on Hubby's business plan. I have read L. Ron Hubbard's work, including his "nutrition" book, "Clear Body, Clear Mind". I have been reading his books since I was a kid, but... Don't believe everything they feed you, okay? That line about meat making you aggressive and pushy...That's BULL SHIT. I don't know what kind of idiot vegetarians you're talking to, but I've never heard any kind of silly propaganda like that. In fact, people react differently to different foods, but most people can eat meat without any problem. So here's a vegetarian telling you that WE DON'T SAY THAT. But anyway, back to WILL. He's a great guy, at least up to this point, so I don't really hold it against him, but...that was an insensitive thing to say. If you want to be idealistic, that's one thing, but Hitler hurt a lot of people. To say, on a global stage, that he had good intentions, is like a slap in the face to the victims of the holocaust as well as the men and women who fought against Nazi Germany. My grandfather fought in WWII, and had to clean up the piles of bodies that clogged up streets all over France. I can't wait to hear what he says about Hitler's "good intentions". Next, you'll be saying Bush meant well, and hooray for seeing the good side of Cheney. BS.

    • the road to hell is paved with good intentions, hitler might have started out a likeable gie,all those people elected him to office .or was he the only one left after haveing all the opasition killed? any way,,,VD clearly didnt help in his bad desidion makeing...the lesson here is that actors act like regular folks for a liveing...haveing some experience in the industry i can tell you menny actors crave normality becaus there lives are anything but normil.all those suck ups kissing there ass on the movie set all day can warp you scence of reality...i guess this means that will smith will not be running for public office.at least not after the hitler statement.

    • yay will smith for seeing the best in people. i admire your foolishly optimistic outlook and envy you. people too often look at the deeds of people and fail to see the misguided do-gooder underneath.

    • I guess he proved his point. He's saying people do evil or bad things despite having good intentions. That's what I'm seeing here. I'm sure he meant well, but he gave this psychopathic dictator far too much credit.

    • I would venture a guess that the statement was meant to point to the fact that no one makes a declaration in the name of evil before setting off on a course of action. Before doing anything important a person must first convince them self that what they are doing is good. This process is of course subverted in its objectivity by a severe sociopathic disorder, hyper narcissistic dementia and a slew of other extreme cognitive, emotional and sexual disorders. Beneath all of that function was an admittedly weak directive to "do good" for all that it was worth. So objectively the statement is true, but a weak notion of doing good after it has been sufficiently twisted by the aforementioned psychological disorders doesn't amount to 'good actions' or even by reckoning of some 'good intentions'.

In any case I don't actually know Will Smith and I can only put down what I would've meant if I'd made the mistake of giving this statement. At any rate it seems a stretch to cast him as some sort of holocaust denier. If nothing else I suggest this be a lesson in making sure it never sounds like your complimenting Hitler and move on.

    • dharleston:

Good reference dharleston. Will is constantly saying that there may be guys that are more talented but "nobody will ever outrun me." Every time he is interviewed, he refers to his tenacity. That is a quality that often leads to quantity and not quality and that can transfer to thoughts, words and deeds as well. I may not know what I'm saying but I'll outblurt you anytime! Perhaps he needs to add the old THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK adage to his non stop schedule. Off the cuff complimentary quips should be reserved for monsters of the cartoon and special effects variety not ones of real flesh and bad blood.
Outrun and outblurt...sounds like that other guy to me! Private Ibber
