A's offer All-You-Can-Eat seating!

Here's a report on how this works. I'd promised to take my son to a game and saw the "all you can eat" option online for purchasing tickets. After some quick math, I decided it might be cheaper than feeding an eleven year old a la carte on six dollar hotdogs, even in the semi-cheap seats. The kid's a toothpick but could probably eat ten times his weight in pizza in one sitting. I bought two tickets while Homer Simpson sang "Nacho Man" again and again in my head.

We got to our seats, which actually weren't bad. The whole area is upper deck, right behind the plate. You could see everything really well, and far from being a haven for ex-Jerry Springer guests--which is what I was expecting, truth be told--it was pretty much filled with 20-somethings, and young families with grandparents in tow.

When it came time to grab a dog, it became pretty apparent that anybody looking to REALLY pack it away was going to have to work for it. The hotdog shown at the top of the post is almost actual size. In fact, all of the food was small enough that you could chow down about three of anything before it matched the stuff being sold elsewhere in the stadium.

The limited menu, and the fact that most of the grub was the flavor and consistency of cardboard, meant I was bored after two phosphate bombs and gave up. I almost gagged watching the guy in front of us glom down about ten hotdogs, but it seemed that most people were sticking to the peanuts and popcorn. Even the boy gave up after two dogs and a bag of popcorn. We did have a Forrest Gump moment after we swigged down about 50 gallons of Dr. Pepper--in tiny cups, of course--but that was a bonus because we burned everything off with all of the running up and down the stairs.

Overall, it wasn't a bad experience. Just set your expectations before you get there, especially if you've got dreams of being a competitive eater for a couple of hours.

This is fairly common around the country. The Sixers and Flyers both do it in Philadelphia.

...and after another beer, time to hit the trough in the men's room. Ahhh..the joys of old crappy stadiums.

Nothing beats Miller's Hot Dogs at that homage d'concrete: McAfee Coliseum! Except maybe a beer, a Miller's Hot Dog, some Krispy Kreme doughnuts, a bag of peanuts, another hot dog, and one more beer before the 7th inning stretch.

Not only did the Dodgers pick up on this idea first, but I would still have to say, an endless supply of the all you can eat Farmer John's Dodger Dog beats out the all you can handle supply of the commonplace Colisseum dog any day... though, what ever happened to the concept of quality over quantity?

Awesome! I LOVE hot dogs and nachos!! It is a great marketing ploy, cuz they know eating all of that, you'll have to pay for a couple of $8 beers!

This is a smart move by the A's to attract fans during a down year - and it will help make the game experience affordable for average families.

It doesn't matter where it started, all that matters is that it's here now. At least now its more affordable to poison yourself.
